NC GOP Lawmaker: Gays Could ‘Lose Rights’ Without Marriage Ban

Click here to view this media Republican state Rep. Dale Folwell, who is co-sponsoring an effort to make marriage discrimination a part of North Carolina’s state constitution, asserted Monday that without the constitutional amendment, LGBT people would actually be at a risk of losing rights. To back up his argument, Folwell cited a decision by the Univ. of Rochester requiring domestic partners to get married to continue receiving health care benefits after New York legalized same sex marriage. “I’ve met with the opposition,” Folwell said during a House Rules Committee debate. “And like in every bill that I’ve ever worked on, when I meet with with the opposition, I learn something. Recently I met with the professor over at — [ Dr. Maxine Eichner ] from UNC Chapel Hill — and I asked this question… Is it possible that if we don’t bring certainty to this issue in North Carolina — give people an opportunity to vote on it — is it possible that people that she advocates for can actually lose rights?” “What we just learned after I asked that question, today or last week the University of Rochester, a private institution in New York that previously gave health care rights to same sex couples, are now rescinding those rights by saying that if you want to receive health care benefits then you have to get married. So, that’s a right that was taken away from a private institution because of laws being uncertain.” Since North Carolina is banning same sex marriage instead of legalizing it, many may question the logic of Folwell’s claim. The Rules Committee subsequently gave the bill a favorable report, sending it to the House floor. The full House could vote on the measure as soon as Monday afternoon.

William H. Millard, Missing CEO, Found After 20 Years With $100M In Unpaid Tax Bills (VIDEO)

Last seen by tax authorities in 1990 on the the Pacific island Saipan, William H. Millard, 79 and founder of tech company ComputerLand, has now been traced to the Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean, The Daily Mail reported. Michael Kim, a partner of Kobre & Kim, the law firm taking the lead in the case, told The Wall Street Journal that Millard’s alleged tax evasion will be difficult to nail down. “This is one of the most sophisticated and complicated cases of offshore asset structuring that we have ever seen. He’s had more than 20 years to move money all over the world.” The publication then elaborated on the difficulty behind actually finding Millard’s money. “Finding his money has proved more difficult. The investigation has been covert, the law firm never confronting Mr. Millard. Investigators worried that if he found out what they knew, he might quickly shift his funds around to get them out of reach. The subpoenas went out under a gag order to prevent financial institutions from disclosing the probe to Mr. Millard or his family.” Although Millard has not commented on his alleged 100 million dollar tax judgment, The Daily Mail writes that his former lawyer, Terry Giles said it was “ludicrous and insulting” to imply Millard was hiding.

We’ve already been privy to a number of previews and teases and even caught a quick glimpse of a handful of ARM-equipped Windows 8 development devices. We’ve reported on an upcoming Windows 8 App Store , a WP7-style Start Menu and, most recently, some super speedy boot times . All of these are part of a much bigger puzzle, one that’s already promised to shake up the Windows brand, but we’ve yet to get a full reveal. If you ask us, it’s about time Microsoft let it all hang out, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. So keep it locked here for updates from the Anaheim Convention Center — we promise you won’t regret it. Protip: Use our ” build2011 ” tag for all the Build news this week!
