This was proven once again when Syrian protesters tore down the Hafez al-Assad statue, Syria’s former president. In the midst of this popular revolt, which also included burning the ruling party’s headquarters, Syrian army tanks arrived and crushed the rebellion. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Syrians marched and proclaimed: “God, Syria, Freedom.” Syrian military forces countered by shooting and killing a number of demonstrators.
