Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini and Mini Pro hands-on

We’ve just gotten to grips with Sony Ericsson’s new compact smartphones , the Xperia Mini and its keyboard-equipped sibling the Xperia Mini Pro, and have a gallery of shots for you below. Hit them up now and we’ll have hands-on impressions and video coming shortly. Xperia Mini — wonderful size when it comes to width and height, but we have to ask: why so thick? The Xperia Mini Pro is only slightly thicker despite having a fully-fledged slideout keyboard, so it would have been nice if the keyboard-less Mini was more svelte. Sony Ericsson is clearly going after the pocket- and handbag-conscious demographic here, who might not be all that receptive to the Mini’s girth. SE also made some bold claims about the finger-friendliness of the Mini Pro’s keyboard, which we were told were backed by usability tests against rival phones. Those trials were isolated to devices “in its size class” (of which there aren’t many), but our first response was still very positive, at least once we turned on auto-correct. This will be a matter of personal preference, but we found ourselves enjoying not having to take care of every little slip of the finger. Anyway, settings adjusted appropriately, we bashed away on the Mini Pro rather speedily and would rate it right up there with the BlackBerry Bold 9700 in terms of our typing rapidity. Browser rendering has its flaws, there’s a stuttery quality to zooming in and out of a page, but at least Flash playback seems to work without a hitch. Today’s new band: Ny (No 1,016)

Still only 22, this singer already has worked with Tinchy, Dappy and Davinche. No wonder she’s been dubbed first lady of R&G Hometown: Kentish Town. The lineup: Nyomi Gray (vocals, songs). The background: The company that Ny keeps could be the clincher for you. You’re either going to be enticed by the fact that she’s good friends with N-Dubz, sang on their album and recently supported them on tour … or you’re not. Then again, you might be more heartened to learn that she’s worked with producer Davinche , collaborated with Professor Green, Tinchy Stryder and the Streets, sang backing vocals with Plan B and was the featured guest on Ironik’s top 5 hit Stay With Me. The latter collaboration was in 2008 and she’s still only 22. Plus she managed to fit in a stint as Wiley’s live-in girlfriend. She’s super-connected: she’s even got Giggs rapping on her debut single Be With You, while Kirk Norcross the club manager from the Only Way Is Essex is in the video. Makes sense. The music she makes is – and we’re not being snobby here because you should see where we live – utterly suited to London’s commuter-belt discos, to Biba’s in Bromley, Oceana in Watford and Liquid in Romford. It is “classy” and “upmarket” soul, with a veneer of chav sophistication but just enough echoes of grime and dubstep that it could be marketed to that crowd as well. No wonder RWD magazine crowned her first lady of R&G – she does garage-y ballads and commercial urban pop with singing as heavy on the melismas as you’d expect from a girl reared on Mariah and Aretha, and lyrics about fighting and surviving that should speak to the Cheryl Cole demographic. She’s an interesting character, is Ny. A strict vegetarian, she was home-schooled by her mum until the age of 10 and wrote poetry growing up. Apparently, these days she does a “great deal of philanthropy and mentoring work, particularly with disadvantaged children”. In a way, she’s more interesting than her music, which is fairly generic, albeit slickly produced and accomplished. Or at least it is now. From what we’ve heard of her two mixtapes, there are schizoid impulses afoot. In fact, on the cover of Splitz Endz Vol 2, there’s a photo of her on one side wearing a ballgown, and on the other she’s head to toe in budget sportswear: half smooth soulstress, half Lady Sov. One of the tracks, What I See, even features the melody from the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, played on what sounds like a synth-kazoo. We’re guessing she’s going to focus on urban chart fodder, though. Which even at its most shiny, you can tell is Not American, lending it a homespun charm. Think Rihanna being piped over the PA at Lidl’s. The buzz: “Fiercely independent and incredibly driven” – famemagazine.co.uk . The truth: She’s got the formula, she’s got the formula. Most likely to: Date Mark Wright. Least likely to: Date Joey Essex. What to buy: Be With You featuring Giggs is released on 22 May. File next to: Yasmin, Jodie Connor, Cheryl Cole, Alexandra Burke. Links: facebook.com . Friday’s new band: Bleeding Knees Club. Pop and rock R&B Grime Urban music Paul Lester guardian.co.uk

Wilkerson: ‘Let Me Waterboard Donald Rumsfeld and Then We’ll See if He Says It’s Torture or Not’

Click here to view this media Ed Schultz asked former Colin Powell Chief of Staff Lawrence Wilkerson about Donald Rumsfeld’s repeated claims that the United States got actionable intelligence from waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and others, and his claim that waterboarding is not torture. Wilkerson did not hold back his disdain for this torture apologist. Wilkerson reminded me a little bit of Jesse Ventura when he said this a couple of years ago about Dick Cheney — Jesse Ventura: You Give Me a Water Board, Dick Cheney and One Hour, and I’ll Have Him Confess to the Sharon Tate Murders . WILKERSON: Well my former boss Colin Powell recently said that Donald Rumsfeld was delusional and deceptive and he could prove both points. My former boss is right. And on this issue Donald Rumsfeld is more delusional than deceptive, probably than any other. First of all his last statement about hordes of intelligence is preposterous. It didn’t produce hoards of intelligence. In fact, I never saw any raw intelligence pass my desk that came from such things that was actionable, that really led to any circumstance at all that produced a result that was positive. Secondly, Donald Rumsfeld only has as knowledge what his bureaucracy gave him. He wasn’t there. He wasn’t at the site. Multiple tiers of bureaucracy gave him the information that he had. And he made damned sure that that bureaucracy was sycophants, yes men, yes women. He made sure that the people working for him told him what he wanted to hear. So one has to expect that Donald Rumsfeld heard what he just said and that was that actionable intelligence was produced by these procedures. It is preposterous. And let me say one last thing. As Christopher Hitchens said after he was actually waterboarded, this is torture, changing his view. Let me waterboard Donald Rumsfeld and then we’ll see if he says it’s torture or not. Schultz asked him why he thought Rumsfeld was doing this. WILKERSON: He’s got to. He’s got to cover his rear end. I mean there are cases in foreign countries right now being worked by lawyers there. one in Switzerland actually kept President George Bush from visiting Switzerland that will under international auspices against Cheney, Rumsfeld, Feith, Addington et al. They don’t dare resort to anything other than defending their positions because ultimately even within their lifetime they may be subject to litigation. I will predict that as I’ve said many times before, they will not travel except perhaps to Israel and Saudi Arabia. Those will be the only two countries Cheney, Rumsfeld and others will travel to. Now that’s something you don’t hear anyone remind the public of on television. Thanks Lawrence.
