The Republicans are not reacting well to last night’s massive Democratic win in NY-26 which became a referendum on Representative Paul Ryan’s plan to end Medicare . Ryan tried awkwardly to laugh off the drubbing with the help of his dear buddy Joe Scarborough on MSNBC this morning but only looked like a petulant child in the process. His party is clearly on the defensive . His Leader – Speaker Boehner – haplessly fired off this tweet : GOP Path to Prosperity preserves & protects Medicare for retirees & future generations & leaves it completely unchanged for those 55 & over Uh yeah, okay. As Leader Pelosi’s office helpfully pointed out in this memo, it was Boehner, Ryan and the House Republicans who voted to : Re-open the prescription drug ‘donut hole’ for current Medicare beneficiaries (including for “those 55 & over”) Nationwide, nearly four million seniors would pay $2.2 billion more for prescription drugs in 2012 alone. [ DPCC Report] Eliminate the free annual wellness visit for current Medicare beneficiaries (including for “those 55 & over”) This could force at least one million seniors to pay over $110 million more for annual wellness visits in 2012. [ DPCC Report] What’s that word again? That’s right – PWNed . The reality is not fun for national Republicans. Even traditional media analysts are offering up the following ominous dose of conventional wisdom for the national GOP : The reality is that the total fealty to the Ryan budget increasingly demanded of Republican presidential candidates by the party’s base runs directly counter to the unpopularity of making drastic cuts to Medicare among the general electorate. Not only is that a major political problem for the party but it’s one without a simple solution. Of course the Republicans think that the simple solution here is to lie “message” their way out of it: “I think we need to be more aggressive in defining that Obamacare cuts Medicare,” said Christian Ferry, a senior Republican consultant. “Then, if the Ryan plan is our position for going forward, we need to actually get out there and define what it is and what it is not in an aggressive, offensive manner, rather than allowing the Democrats to play gotcha, scare politics as they did in NY-26.” Aaah, yes. Ferry and his GOP cohorts think just lying harder about Affordable Care Act is going to make their problems go away. That is not going to happen because more than a year has passed since ACA became law and not a single senior has seen their Medicare benefits cut. What the new health care law did do away with was waste and abuse in the form of billions of dollars, filling up the pockets of private insurance companies (Republican sugar daddies). As noted by the Economic Policy Institute , “[e]liminating these overpayments [to private insurance companies] would free up $157 billion over 10 years.” You can read more about the waste and abuse issue that ACA eliminated in this Center on Budget and Policy Priorities report . So trying to make their Medicare problem go away by crying about needless subsidies to the big insurance companies as “cuts” is just not going to work. So, back to the main event. What are the Senate Republicans going to do tomorrow? Are they going to bear hug a Ryan budget that even Republican Senators like Olympia Snowe are calling “a race to the bottom” ? Think about what someone like Senator Dean Heller is going to do. Is he going to vote to kill our Medicare program and throw our seniors off the cliff twice? He already voted to do it once as a member of Boehner’s crazy GOP caucus. Imagine the problems that will create for him in a battleground state like Nevada. If all the so-called “moderate” Republican Senators abandon ship when the RyanCare comes on the Senate Floor, that will pull the rug out of all the Republican Congressmen – voting to end Medicare – representing districts that were won by President Barack Obama in 2008. Any way you look at it, the picture is not pretty for the Republicans. It’s no wonder they are sounding like petulant children today.

Sony announces VAIO SA series ultraportable, puts VAIO F series up for pre-order

Having trouble keeping Sony’s slim VAIO S series laptops straight? It’s okay, we are, too, especially now that the company’s unveiled the SA series, a 13.3-inch ultraportable that’s poised to go toe to toe with the skinny Lenovo ThinkPad X1 . Although it’s got almost the same magnesium-and-alloy chassis as the VAIO SB series we saw at CES , the SA is a hair thinner, at 0.95 inches, and comes standard with AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics and 1GB of video memory, 1600 x 900 resolution, a 500GB hard drive, fingerprint reader, and a Blu-ray drive. You can also trick it out with a dual channel solid-state drive, which promises to help let you work up to 16 hours unplugged if you combine it with a $100 sheet battery. The catch: you’ll have to fork out a minimum of $3,105 just to snag one with an SSD. If the SA’s $1,375 starting price is more than you’re willing to spend, there’s still the SB series, though the $999 base model naturally has less impressive specs, including 512MB of video memory, 1366 x 768 resolution, a DVD player, and a Core i5 — not Core i7 — processor. For what its worth, its color options now include pink and navy, if that floats your boat more than the high-end SA’s black, silver, and brown palette. In other news, Sony’s also taking orders for the VAIO F Series , which comes in two flavors: one with a 16-inch 3D display with a 2D-to-3D conversion button, starting at $1,840, and a 16.4-inch 2D model with a more modest $799 base price. But if you want a 2D display with 1080p resolution and a Blu-ray drive, you can expect to pay at least $1,125. Both these and the SA series are up for pre-order today, with gussied-up photos below and full PR and past the break. John Edwards to face charges of misusing vice-presidential race funds

Former US Democratic candidate alleged to have used more than $1m in illegal contributions to conceal affair in 2008 The disgraced former US vice-presidential contender John Edwards is to be charged for allegedly using more than $1m in illegal campaign contributions to hide an affair that destroyed his presidential ambitions. The justice department is to accuse Edwards, once a rising star of the Democratic party as its 2004 vice-presidential candidate, of accepting substantial donations to his 2008 campaign from two wealthy supporters in order to cover up the relationship with his campaign videographer, Rielle Hunter, and the fact that they had a child together. The charges come out of a grand jury investigation which heard from more than a dozen witnesses including Edwards’s former chief aide, Andrew Young, who at one time covered up for his boss by falsely claiming paternity of the child and then writing a book about it. Last year, Young discovered a video tape of Edwards having sex with Hunter among a box of personal possessions left at his home by his former boss’s mistress. A judge ordered the tape to be turned over to the court as part of an investigation into whether cash given to Hunter by Edwards was in effect hush money. Edwards is to be accused of using the campaign donations to support and seclude Hunter. Edwards now faces the choice of attempting to reach a plea bargain which would result in him being struck off as a lawyer or taking his chances on a trial and the prospect of prison time. The charges are only the latest in a string of public humiliations and exposures which have some of Edwards’s former supporters saying that because of his actions and lies they now regard his political persona as a fabrication and that he was unfit for public office. After his 2008 campaign for his party’s presidential nomination faltered in the face of competition from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, Edwards was once again considered a likely vice-presidential nominee. But revelations about his affair began to appear in the tabloid press. He initially denied them but they killed off his chances of higher office and later that year he admitted to the relationship with Hunter. However, it was another two years before he admitted to paternity of the child. Further revelations about the true nature of John and Elizabeth Edwards’s marriage emerged. She was regarded as her husband’s closest adviser and strategist who was instrumental in selecting his staff and directing his campaign. But she was later revealed to be an “abusive” individual who left creepy voicemails and terrified her husband’s campaign staff. Elizabeth Edwards had known about the affair for months before it was made public, but her husband assured her it was just a one-night stand. Later she released a book that detailed her struggle with her husband’s infidelity. The couple split up after he admitted the affair with Hunter and she died in December of cancer. Republican Rep. Rob Woodall keeping his government health care ‘because it’s free’

Click here to view this media Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA) faced criticism this week when video was released of him telling a constituent that she should sponsor her own health care instead of using the government’s Medicare program. The Georgia Democratic Party released more video Wednesday from that same town hall event where Woodall explained why he wouldn’t give up his own government-funded health care program. “You take government-subsidized health care, but you are not obligated to take that if you don’t want to,” Democratic activist Ilene Johnson told Woodall. “Why aren’t you going out on the free market in the state where you are a resident and buy your own health care?” “It’s because it’s free,” Woodall replied. “It’s because it’s free. The same reason I went out to Walgreens and bought Activon when I don’t have any arthritis pain. Because it’s free. Folks, if you give people things for free, don’t blame them for taking them.” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a transcript .
