To the surprise of no one : After months of leaving her fans guessing, Palin said in a statement that she and her husband Todd “devote ourselves to God, family and country.” She said her decision maintains that order. Palin sent the statement to supporters. She told conservative radio host Mark Levin that she would not consider a third party candidacy because it would assure President Barack Obama’s reelection. In a video posted on YouTube, Palin said, “you don’t need an office or a title to make a difference.” I think it’s particularly telling that Palin thinks of the presidency of the United States as little more than a “title” and “office”…as if she’s opting not to run in another of her pageants. And I’m sure we’re all happy to know that Palin really soul-searched to come to the decision to forgo that title : “ If I say no to the opportunity that’s in front of me, politically speaking, will I die?,” she said, discussing her decision making process. “But no, after making the decision today and making the announcement, I know beyond a shadow of the doubt … I know that it’s the right decision.” Whew, that’s a relief. But truly, who thought this would turn out any other way? Elections and campaigning are hard work…white papers…interviews with non-friendly media asking those “gotcha” questions like what magazines you read…having to be on the alert to not incite violence against members of Congress…having to report your donations and comply with FEC restrictions…that’s no fun. It far more lucrative to give speeches and be Roger Ailes’ man magnet EDITOR’S NOTE: It’s minute 16. Bye-bye Sarah. It’s been fun.

Rohm Wireless Power Transmission system hands-on (video)

Wireless power demos abound at CEATEC , and Rohm Semiconductor had their own variant on hand with a complete mix of direct-draw gadgets, along with the omnipresent charging iPhone 4 (or was it a 4S ?). Like Murata’s prototype , the Rohm flavor uses square electrodes instead of the coils that you’ll find in traditional wireless power solutions, like Qi . But unlike that seemingly identical solution from Murata, this version supports much greater power efficiency — something in the 92 to 93 percent range (compared to the competing pad’s 70-percent efficiency rating). That means that the prototype that we’re looking at here loses just seven to eight percent of power during transmission — which is still unacceptably high, mind you, but far more tolerable. Rohm’s Wireless Power Transmission system also allows you to charge or power devices by placing them anywhere on the pad, rather than directly over charging positions, and it supports much greater transmission, with one prototype outputting up to 100 watts. Since power efficiency isn’t something we could verify visually, what we could see at the company’s demo did appear to work quite well. Powering a gadget is as simple as dropping it on the pad. Well, resting it gently — this is a prototype we’re talking about, after all. The 50-watt pad was able to power a fan, LED light, and a couple of charging smartphones without issue. The light and fan jumped to full power as soon as they made contact. A second pad got the juices flowing to a large OLED light panel, which was plenty bright when positioned on its own pad, but glowed quite dim when joining other devices. There weren’t any charging laptops on hand, like we saw over at Murata, but with power output at 50 and 100 watts, either pad could theoretically support it. Like many of the prototypes we’ve seen at CEATEC, there aren’t any plans to actually bring the system to market, but the technology could be used in other devices. We go hands-on after the break. NY Fox 5 Crew Pepper Sprayed And Assaulted By NYPD

Click here to view this media [h/t Heather ] During tonight’s massive Occupy Wall Street demonstration in New York, a local Fox News affiliate reporter and his crew found themselves on the wrong side of the NYPD. While covering the Occupy Wall Street protests on Wednesday night, Fox 5 photographer Roy Isen was hit in the eyes by mace from a police officer and Fox 5 reporter Dick Brennan was hit by an officer’s baton. The protests on Wall Street continued to grow all day. The rallies and their participants are showing no signs of slowing down. In the evening, crowds surged past barriers and NYPD officers moved in to contain the protesters. By many accounts, mayhem broke out. Officers, many wearing white shorts indicating supervisor rank, swatted protesters with batons and sprayed them with mace, video from the scene showed. Fox 5′s Isen and Brennan were there and witnessed the chaos. At one point, Brennan was hit in the abdomen by a police baton and Isen got irritant in his eyes. Both journalists were all right and continued to cover the protests and arrests. Note what’s missing from this story: Violence on the side of the protesters. Crossing a barricade is not violent. It is not threatening. It is simply crossing a barricade. The response of the officers left me feeling pretty shaky. Batons, pepper spray, and yes, done by the white shirts, but not only the white shirts. Evidently these policemen do not understand that beating and pepper-spraying protesters and hapless reporters in the area will do nothing but increase resolve in every person who watches to join the protests. Do they learn nothing from previous experience? No, evidently not. Check out this officer standing at a barricade bragging about what he and his little nightstick are going to do: While there’s certainly a story here in the fact of police not only attacking protesters but also reporters and their crew, I think the larger story will unfold when we see how Fox News handles this story. Will they ignore it? Will they gloss over it? Will they blame those who tried to cross the barricade? Can you imagine what their lede would be the next day if a tea party protester and news crew were pepper-sprayed and beaten? This will be a moment of truth for Roger Ailes. How will he spin an attack on reporters for a Rupert Murdoch-owned news channel? Inquiring minds want to know.

HomePlug Alliance keeps plugging away at powerline communications

Try as it might, the HomePlug Alliance just can’t seem to get its foot in the proverbial door of consumers’ homes. Now the organization is eying a different target market — utilities. Its new Netricity Powerline Communications program aims to get utility companies and makers of smart meters to adopt the 1901.2 standard for sending data through existing electrical wiring and march us into the smart grid future. The low-frequency, narrow-band PLC won’t do anything to help you stream HD video around your home, but it should be more than enough for monitoring your energy consumption. Check out the PR after the break for a few more details. HomePlug Alliance keeps plugging away at powerline communications originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 06:40:00 EDT. Ad-supported Kindle 4 has built-in $30 "upgrade", gets rid of embedded special offers

Was it too cheap? Well, here’s some great news for fourth-generation Kindle users already tiring of its embedded ads looking cheap alongside their Vertu phones. You can now pay Amazon the requisite fee and unsubscribe from built-in advertising and offers. Visit the Manage your Kindle webpage and you can edit your subscriptions for the newest entry-level e-reader. There seems to be no option, however, to do the reverse just yet. Would Amazon hand over $30 to push those special offers into our currently ad-free Kindle?
