NBC: Weiner Resignation Announcement ‘Showed Much of His Strength as a Congressman’

During Thursday NBC News special coverage of New York Congressman Anthony Weiner announcing his resignation, congressional correspondent Kelly O'Donnell remarked to Nightly News anchor Brian Williams: “Anthony Weiner showed much of his strength as a Congressman in what he talked about just now in trying to talk about a message that was something other than this scandal.” [ Audio available here ] After Weiner finished speaking, Williams wondered: “Kelly, was there ever any salvaging this? It's been – it's been said that if he'd been candid at the beginning he could still have his seat in Congress.” O'Donnell acknowledged how damaging the lying was, but then sympathetically observed: “The underlying nature of this type of scandal, which was so embarrassing, also made it very difficult for him to go forward because he has been mocked in a way that no one would ever wish on their enemy.”

Carl Sorabella, Massachusetts Man, Fired After Disclosing Wife’s Cancer

Cancer is an awful thing for any family to deal with. It’s even more of a problem when it gets you fired. When Carl Sorabella, of Massachusetts, told his employer that he would need to take some medical leave in order to deal with his wife’s cancer, he thought it was a reasonable request. But according to ABC News, when he walked into work on Monday, he found a note on his desk saying that he had been fired. “When I told my boss, she said ‘We were thinking about laying you off.’ I thought, ‘You can’t do that,’” Sorabella told WCVB 5 in Boston. Sorbella’s wife of 23 years, Kathy, had learned she had stage 4 untreatable cancer in April. But according to the report, the request for a modified schedule in order to deal with the problem was too much for his employer, Haynes Management, a real estate company in Wellesley Hills, Mass. According to ABC, Sorbella feels he was wrongfully terminated: “Ultimately she said don’t worry about it and come in on Monday, and when I came in on Monday I got a letter that I would be laid off,” he said. Sorabella said the letter stated he was being laid off due to “workforce modifications.” But one week after he was fired, he says he saw a listing for his job on the company website. “She said, ‘It’s business. I’m running a company here, and I need to make sure the department runs.’ And I argued that I would make sure the company runs,” Sorabella said. While there are laws in place to protect employees from this sort of thing, The Family and Medical Leave Act only applies to companies with 50 or more employees. As a result, many small business employees are left with few legal options. For video, click here for more from ABC.

Ayman Al-Zawahiri Chosen By Al Qaeda To Succeed Bin Laden

CAIRO (AP) — Al-Qaeda has selected its longtime No. 2 to succeed Osama bin Laden following last month’s U.S. commando raid that killed the terror leader, according to a statement posted Thursday on a website affiliated with the network. Ayman al-Zawahiri, who will turn 60 next week, is believed to be operating from somewhere near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. He is the son of an upper middle class Egyptian family of doctors and scholars. His father was a pharmacology professor at Cairo University’s medical school and his grandfather was the grand imam of Al-Azhar University, a premier center of religious study. In a videotaped eulogy released earlier this month, al-Zawahiri warned that America faces not individual terrorists or groups but an international community of Muslims that seek to destroy it and its allies. “Today, praise God, America is not facing an individual, a group or a faction,” he said, wearing a white robe and turban with an assault rifle leaned on a wall behind him. “It is facing a nation than is in revolt, having risen from its lethargy to a renaissance of jihad.” Al-Zawahiri also heaped praise on bin Laden, who was killed in a May 2 raid by U.S. Navy SEALs in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad, and criticized the U.S. for burying him at sea. “He went to his God as a martyr, the man who terrified America while alive and terrifies it in death, so much so that they trembled at the idea of his having tomb,” he said. Al-Qaeda gave no details about the selection process for bin Laden’s successor but said that it was the best tribute to the memory of its “martyrs.” The statement announcing al-Zawahiri’s succession was filled with the terror network’s usual rhetoric, vowing to continue the fight against what it called “conquering infidels, led by America and its stooge Israel, who attack the homes of Islam.” The group also said it will never accept Israel’s legitimacy and will continue to support Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and North Africa. The al-Qaeda statement also stated the group’s support for this year’s popular uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Syria and Libya. “We encourage the people of Islam to rise up and continue the struggle, persistence and devotion until all the corrupt and oppressive regimes imposed by the West are gone,” it said. Don’t tell us where you’re going, Nissan Leaf driver, we already know (video)

That cute little bugger above certainly looks innocent enough, but it might have been spreading some pretty detailed gossip behind your back. Leaf-driver Casey Halverson was playing around with the RSS reader in his Carwings system when he discovered that it wasn’t just collecting feeds from RSS servers, it was also telling those servers his car’s current location, speed, heading and even the destination he’d set in the sat nav. Strangely, Halverson’s undercover tattletale appears to have halted its indiscretions after he posted the discovery on his blog, but we’re surmising there’s still hundreds of server logs up and down the country that prove it really happened, not to mention his video after the break. Cue Rockwell , fade to black.
