Games for Windows Marketplace, Xbox.com becoming one big, game-obsessed family

Games for Windows Marketplace will no longer have to drift through life alone. Microsoft announced this week that the Steam competitor will be absorbed by Xbox.com — a seemingly logical merger, given the site’s association with Xbox Live. The move comes in spite of an attempt on Microsoft’s part to completely revamp the service late last year. The Marketplace is set to move into its new digs on July 11th, so here’s hoping it takes advantage of its last few days of freedom in style — by sitting around in its underwear playing video games, naturally. Facebook to launch in-browser video chat powered by Skype?

Microsoft’s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype hasn’t closed yet, but it looks like Redmond is already working behind the scenes to make the service even more ubiquitous. According to some anonymous sources interviewed by TechCrunch , Facebook is going to introduce video chat next week, and that service will be powered by none other than Skype. And while the service will be browser-based, it’s also said to include a desktop component. We’d say none of that sounds too fantastical — video calls would be a logical extension of Facebook chat, a nd let’s not forget about the $240 million Microsoft invested in the site back in 2007. What’s more, Facebook sent out invites for an event next week, where Mark Zuckerberg was clear the outfit would unveil a new product from its Seattle team. That’s in Microsoft’s backyard, of course, the invites themselves have chat icons on ‘em, and, most tellingly, that Seattle office has been snapping up engineers specializing in desktop software. All told, that adds up to a likely true story to us, but we won’t know for sure until the long, beachy weekend is through. The answer is the winner of the Nokia Shorts 2011 contest, a two and a half minute long movie shot using only the Nokia N8 phone. “Splitscreen: A Love Story,” directed by JW Griffiths with director of photography Christopher Moon took the first place prize for an award of $10,000. Eight finalists were given $5,000, two Nokia N8s and a few weeks to make their films, with premieres at the Edinburgh Film Festival. “Splitscreen” is the sweet fable of a man and a woman, one in Paris, the other in New York, living their respective lives in splitscreen view, until finally, the two meet, and the screens merge. Fareed Zakaria: Fox Viewers Don’t Watch CNN – Our Competition is NPR and NYT

CNN's Fareed Zakaria made a bit of a Kinsley gaffe Friday. On NPR's “Morning Edition,” Zakaria said, “The people who watch Fox are not going to watch CNN…Our competitors should properly be The New York Times, the BBC, NPR” (video follows with transcript and commentary): DAVID FOLKENFLIK, NPR: Jon Klein, the former president of CNN's American network, tried to mint new stars – primetime hosts Piers Morgan and Eliot Spitzer among them. [CNN Executive Vice President Mark] Whitaker says he's high on them but when he looks at the cable news landscape, at the glut of political talk, and he sees CNN, he says unlike its competitors, it need not be largely defined by the ideology of its hosts or by its treatment of politics. MARK WHITAKER WHITAKER, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, CNN: I think perhaps there have been times in the past when CNN would have people who represented extreme views, let them go at it in a food fight, and then sit there neutrally in the middle and then toss to commercial. Well, we're not going to do that anymore. FOLKENFLIK: Instead, Whitaker is pushing for scoops, for more in-depth reporting, and for crisper interviews that yield more insight. So, according to Whitaker, CNN “need not be largely defined by the ideology of its hosts or by its treatment of politics.” Enter Zakaria stage far-left: FOLKENFLIK: Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN's “GPS” and a former colleague at Newsweek, says Whitaker has already had a profound effect. FAREED ZAKARIA (Host, “GPS”): CNN is getting smarter, and you can feel it in the stories, you can feel it in the depth with which they're covered, the kinds of people in terms of guests who are brought on air, the way in which issues are discussed. FOLKENFLIK: And Zakaria argues the channel should ignore Fox and MSNBC. Mr. ZAKARIA: The people who watch Fox are not going to watch CNN. You know, let's be honest. Our competitors should properly be The New York Times, the BBC, NPR. For those unfamiliar with the term “Kinsley gaffe” – named after former CNN contributor Michael Kinsley – is when a politician accidentally tells the truth. In Zakaria's case, the idea that he sees CNN's competition as being the far-left outlets the New York Times and NPR is really all you need to know about the ideology the so-called “Most trusted name in news” is largely defined by. Thanks, Fareed. We couldn't have said it any better. (H/T TVNewser )

Gorilla Adopted By Childless Couple In France (VIDEO)

Pierre and Elianne Thivillon don’t have any children. But they do have a 265-pound gorilla. The couple, both zookeepers, took in Digit 13 years ago, when her biological mother refused to breastfeed. They already had experience working with gorillas, but acknowledge that it’s not an easy job. New Zealand’s News 3 reports that the couple compares raising Digit to raising a child, in terms of the impact on their social life. There are no more nights out to the movies or restaurants, but they don’t seem to mind. BBC News reports that during the day, Digit spends her time at the Saint Martin la Plaine Zoo in France. In the evenings, she returns home to her adopted parents, where she enjoys sleeping in their bed. According to New Zealand’s News 3, the couple also once cared for Digit’s brother, Ginko, but he became aggressive and they had to return him to the zoo. “Life was very difficult a few days after Ginko left. We got used to seeing him everyday. He slept near us, we had breakfast together, we had a good time together and it was a real pleasure. It was very hard to see him go,” Pierre told the news organization. But Digit’s relationship to the couple appears to be quite loving, and video captures Digit hugging Pierre and even planting a kiss on him. As Pierre says, “It’s going very well. We have a 13-year-old relationship with Digit, so obviously we’ve created a very strong bond with each other.” Although Digit’s story is a unique situation, keeping wild animals in human households can be frowned upon. 17-year-old Felicia Frisco sleeps with a Bengal tiger in her bed, and questions were raised over whether or not the animal should be kept in captivity. Unfortunately though, a handler explained, “There’s nowhere for a tiger to live in the wild anymore.” As for gorillas, many are endangered or threatened. For example, mountain gorillas in Central Africa are threatened by the Human Metapneumovirus which causes deadly respiratory diseases in humans and can be passed on to mountain gorillas. WATCH:

GSM turns 20 today, still rocking the world

Happy birthday, dear Global System for Mobile Communications! 20 years ago today, on July 1 1991, the world’s first GSM call was made by Finnish Prime Minister Harri Holkeri. The historic call used Nokia gear on GSM’s original 900MHz band. Today GSM is all grown up and ruling the world — connecting 1.5 billion people in 212 countries and serving 80% of the planet’s mobile market. GSM gave us a number of firsts. It was the first fully digital cellular system using TDMA to cram more information into less spectrum and provide better sounding, more reliable calls using less power. It introduced the Subscriber Identity Module ( SIM ), the idea of switching handsets at will (something carriers have sought to subvert by locking phones), and the reality of international roaming. Short Messaging Service ( SMS ) was first launched on GSM networks, along with packet data ( GPRS and later EDGE ), which made internet access practical on mobile devices. Eventually, GSM expanded to the 400, 800, 1800 and 1900MHz bands and evolved into WDCMA-based UMTS (3G) and later HSPA and HSPA+, followed by LTE (4G) networks. So next time you’re at the coffee shop sipping on that latte while uploading that video to YouTube at 10Mbps using your LTE phone, remember to be thankful for that first GSM call 20 years ago — that’s when the mobile revolution really started.
