And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. – Jesus Christ from Matthew 19;24 Watch that video above of Colorado state Rep Joe Miklosi announcing his candidacy for the congressional seat passed from Tom Tancredo to an even further right crackpot, Mike Coffman. When he ends it with “God bless you,” he means it. The first time I spoke with him, we spent more time talking about Jesus’ message than I’ve talked about with every other candidate Blue America has ever endorsed– not because we endorse people who don’t embrace Jesus’ message… just because it isn’t a topic progressives usually talk about publicly. But Joe isn’t “usual.” As his campaign motto says, “not your ordinary Joe.” Before I tell you what his favorite Bible verse is (the one above is one of mine), let me tell you how I met Joe. Gloria Totten heads up Progressive Majority, an organization that does on the state legislature level what Blue America does on the congressional level. She told me about Joe months ago when he was considering running. “Joe is an outstanding progressive who has stood firm on the progressive issues we care most about,” she told me. “He is a proven leader who is committed to building our movement for the future– as Progressive Majority’s Colorado state director, Joe helped 60 progressives win state and local office. We were proud to support Joe in his bid for the State House and I’m thrilled to back his campaign for the U.S. Congress. Trust me, Washington, DC needs more public servants like Joe– smart, energetic, committed and passionate for the people.” For the people… and more. This is one of Joe’s favorite Bible verses. It comes from the prophet Micah who Christ quoted when asked what does the Lord require of you? You probably don’t hear many on the “religious” right espousing this one: To love justice, to seek mercy, and to walk humbly with the Lord. Joe is perfectly comfortable talking about messages from Jesus like that– even if conservatives (see my favorite Bible verse up top) have tried to coopt Jesus for their ideology of selfishness and bigotry, greed and hatred. “This theme,” Joe told me this week, “has motivated me to pursue public policy that is more fair and just for every person. It clarifies, for example, my stance to repeal the unjust ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ law because all people should be able to serve in the United States military regardless of how they were born. The aspiration toward these goals helped to inspire my sponsorship of the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act beneficiaries are good kids, who play by the rules, earn good grades point averages and want to contribute to our society. By creating educational and workforce development opportunities for students we can energize and empower individuals and families and grow our economy for all Americans.” Who would Jesus kill? Joe doesn’t seem to find Jesus wanting to kill anyone. “I oppose the death penalty because we can do better as a society,” he said. “We have killed innocent people as DNA testing has verified. We disproportionately kill people from communities of color, as the U.S. Supreme Court recently confirmed. A person rightfully convicted of murder or heinous act should spend the rest of their life in prison.” Prison is pretty horrible. But our business elites have behaved (badly) knowing full well that the chances that they — regardless of what they do– aren’t likely to spend much time there. So what about Wall Street? What about OccupyWallStreet. I asked Joe what he thinks about the whole movement. His response: “In regard to Wall Street and economic reform, I respect those that take peaceful action to advocate for an economy that rewards hard work, encourages innovation and investment in education, retools Americans, and produces livable wages. “We can not allow Wall Street elitists to break the rules, change the rules, and keep moving the goalpost, away from hard working families. Because of Wall Street greed and arrogance in 2008, millions of families were robbed of the dreams they worked and saved for, our nation was hobbled, and the Wall Street crowd sauntered into Washington to rewrite the rules again– to give themselves a bailout. That’s not thrift, it’s theft. “It is amazing to see so many inspired people– from and for various points of view– advocating for change and a fair financial system.” We’re going to have Joe over in the comments section (below) today at noon (Mountain Time, 11am here in L.A.) to talk about his campaign and why he’s running for Congress. I hope you’ll join us. And I hope I’ve presented Joe attractively enough so that you’d like to help him beat that crackpot Coffman. You can do that here on the Blue America page .

HTC Amaze 4G review

What do you do when you’ve already created a Sensation ? If you’re HTC , you repackage that lightning in a slightly different chassis, turn the volume (read: speed) up to 11 and borrow a bit of optical wizardry to add that new smartphone smell. All key elements that can be found in the DNA of the company’s latest imperatively named product offering — the Amaze 4G. Clearly, HTC’s throwing caution to the fickle consumer winds here, raising the bar for Android users’ expectations and mixing in just enough razzle dazzle to win over those hard earned geek dollars. So, what’s the hook this time ’round? No, not Beats — that’s for its Euro stepcousin, the Sensation XE . Here, the main attraction is this handset’s ability to surf along T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 42Mbps network . That’s right, Magenta’s tiptoeing into LTE speed territory and you’ve got Sense 3.0 to help pilot that wireless ride. Join us after the break as we peel back the layers of this unibodied mobile onion. Was Herman Cain’s 999 Tax Plan Cribbed From A Video Game?

Click here to view this media Amanda Terke l at Huffington Post introduced this bit of conjecture into the already ridiculous Republican presidential candidates race, and it is has now happily gone mainstream with all the other foolishness associated with the Republican field this year. Rachel Maddow had a bit of fun last night exploring this topic at Herman Cain’s expense. In Herman Cain’s America, the tax code would be very, very simple: The corporate income tax rate would be 9 percent, the personal income tax rate would be 9 percent and the national sales tax rate would be 9 percent. But there’s already a 999 plan out there, in a land called SimCity . Long before Cain was running for president and getting attention for his 999 plan, the residents of SimCity 4 — which was released in 2003 — were living under a system where the default tax rate was 9 percent for commercial taxes, 9 percent for industrial taxes and 9 percent for residential taxes. Cain denies any of that, calling such accusations blatant lies to discredit him, now that he’s supposedly a front-runner for the nomination. Given Cain’s strange history with pop culture references though it’s quite believable, or at least as believable as anything else associated with his “campaign.” I’m still not convinced that Herman Cain is not just a fictional candidate, running an extended book tour who now finds himself caught up in the moment, somewhat bizarrely leading the pack of oddballs otherwise known as the Republican candidates for president. Herman Cain’s campaign slogan: “A SIM-PLE PLAN FOR A SIMPLE MAN.” enlarge Credit: Huffington Post

Herman Cain 999 Plan: Did It Come From SimCity?

WASHINGTON — In Herman Cain’s America, the tax code would be very, very simple: The corporate income tax rate would be 9 percent, the personal income tax rate would be 9 percent and the national sales tax rate would be 9 percent. But there’s already a 999 plan out there, in a land called SimCity. Long before Cain was running for president and getting attention for his 999 plan, the residents of SimCity 4 — which was released in 2003 — were living under a system where the default tax rate was 9 percent for commercial taxes, 9 percent for industrial taxes and 9 percent for residential taxes. (That is, of course, if you didn’t use the cheat codes to get unlimited money and avoid taxes altogether.) A screenshot from the game’s default settings: There has been all sorts of speculation about where Cain came up with the idea for his catchy plan — Unnamed economic advisers? A clever marketing promotion pulled from the pizza industry? — but beyond a few hardcore gamers in the comments sections of blogs, few have looked to SimCity, the land where there’s a “God mode.” Kip Katsarelis, a senior producer for Maxis, the company that created the SimCity series, was excited that politicians may be looking to video games for ideas. “We encourage politicians to continue to look to innovative games like SimCity for inspiration for social and economic change,” said Katsarelis. “While we at Maxis and Electronic Arts do not endorse any political candidates or their platforms, it’s interesting to see GOP candidate Herman Cain propose a simplified tax system like one we designed for the video game SimCity 4.” Adopting such a simple tax structure, Katsarelis said, would allow fantasy political leaders to focus their energy on infrastructure and national security. “Our game design team thought that an easy to understand taxation system would allow players to focus on building their cities and have fun thwarting giant lizard attacks, rather than be buried by overly complex financial systems.” When asked about similarities between Cain’s plan and SimCity’s default tax rates, Cain campaign spokesman JD Gordon replied, “Well, we all like 9-9-9.” Rich Lowrie, the Ohio Wells Fargo employee who is the brains behind Cain’s plan, did not return a request for comment regarding whether he is a fan of SimCity and looked to the game for inspiration. A receptionist at Lowrie’s Wells Fargo office said she doubted his idea came from SimCity. “Probably not,” she told The Huffington Post. “I don’t think he’s much of a game person.” Presumably, under the Cain plan, disasters would be turned off. Ryan Grim contributed reporting.

If anyone from the MSM believes that the influence Fox News wields in the media is negligible this video should prove as a reminder that they are wrong. Glenn Beck is a case in point. His show on CNN made barely a blip on of the RWNM’s radar, but as soon as he began his Vicks vapor rub routine on Fox News , he became a media sensation and tea party hero. But as soon as he was booted of the network by Ailes because his mission had been accomplished, we rarely hear much about the rodeo clown these days. But it doesn’t mean he’s still not melting down and issuing warnings of the coming left wing Armageddon. Beck: Capitalists, if you think that you can play footsie with these people, you are wrong. They will come for you and drag you into the streets and kill you. They will do it. They’re not messing around. Those in the media – and I am included in this – they will drag us out into the streets and kill us. If you’re wealthy, they will kill you for what you have. You cannot tolerate this kind of stuff. You certainly do not encourage it.” Wow, that’s out there even for him. I was hoping to see one of his Dr. Gene Scott charts in the mix. Oh, well. Anyway, please keep donating to our Solidarity Pizza fund to support the Occupy Wall Street movement. It will also go a long way in ensuring more insane meltdowns by the wingnuts and Wall Street apologists which is just fun to watch: Beck’s warning to Nancy Pelosi was priceless .
