Reason’s Nick Gillespie Exposes Maher Hypocrisy: Would You Give Up This Show to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

Bill Maher on Friday once again got caught in his own hypocrisy. As HBO's “Real Time” host waxed philosophic about socialism and “shared sacrifice” for the good of the country, Reason TV's Nick Gillespie stumped the sometimes comedian by asking if he would give up his cars or his television show to reduce his carbon footprint (video follows with transcript and commentary): BILL MAHER, HOST: It seems like, you know, the idea of socialism and sacrifice and we're all in it together, which is socialism is a very bad word in this country, but we had last weekend out here in something called Carmageddon where they closed the 405 and we thought it was going be horrible. But you know what? They educated the public, they asked them to help and participate, and they did, and it made me think maybe this could, crazy idea, maybe the idea of asking people to sacrifice and actually, you know, bringing them into the situation they would respond. DONNA BRAZILE, DEMOCRAT STRATEGIST: Shared sacrifice. NICK GILLESPIE, REASON TV: But what's the sacrifice? I mean, just don't use the 405 for a weekend. MAHER: That's true. It wasn’t a big sacrifice. DONNA BRAZILE: But really, stay off the roads, walk, talk to your neighbor, you know, get around. MAHER: Some of these things are not that difficult. I read in USA TODAY this week that if every American just gave up eating meat and cheese one day of the week, it would be the equivalent of saving 91 billion driving miles in a year. So, people should give up meat and cheese one day of the week to reduce total carbon dioxide emissions. But when Gillespie made “shared sacrifice” personal to Maher, he froze up like a deer in headlights:

Android App Player leaks out on to BlackBerry PlayBook

Back in April, when we put the PlayBook through its paces , we were disappointed to find it lacked the previously promised , and eventually teased , Android Player. Well, the time has finally come — at least for those of you, who don’t mind getting your hands, and tablet, dirty with leaked software. The folks over at n4bb snatched up a beta version of the program, which brings nearly 250,000 little-green-monster apps to the BB slab, but point out that it’s got its drawbacks. Aside from altogether lacking a back button, this build apparently has some lagging issues. If you’re the adventurous type, however, you can download and sideload the appropriate file by clicking on the source link below. But if your PlayBook gets covered in all sorts of leaky beta goo, don’t come running to us — it is unofficial after all. RIM brings video editing service JayCut into the BlackBerry fold

If it’s going to try and compete in the tablet world, whether or not it wants to be known as the enterprise-friendly slate, RIM will have to step up its multimedia game . The company clearly understands this, that’s why it’s snatched up the online video-editing service JayCut. It’s obvious the startup’s expertise will be used to create a video editing app for the BlackBerry platform, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of sharing and cloud storage service built on top of it as well. Obviously we’re just speculating for now. Check out the brief announcement posts at the two source links. ‘Peeved’ Obama Knocks Boehner: ‘I’ve Been Left at the Altar’

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner abruptly broke off talks with President Barack Obama Friday night on a deal to make major cuts in federal spending and avert a threatened government default, sending already uncertain compromise efforts into instant crisis. Within minutes, an obviously peeved Obama virtually ordered congressional leaders to the White House Saturday morning for fresh negotiations… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : The Blaze Discovery Date : 23/07/2011 02:45 Number of articles : 4

Great White Shark Jumps Into Research Boat Off South African Coast

Researchers observing great white sharks on South Africa’s Cape Coast ended up slightly closer to their subject than they probably hoped. The team of scientists from Oceans Research was conducting a shark population study on Monday in the waters off Seal Island, located near Mossel Bay, when around 8:30 am, the waters calmed for about five minutes. Dorien Schroder, team leader, described to the Cape Times what happened next: “Next thing I know I hear a splash, and see a white shark breach out of the water from [the] side of the boat hovering, literally, over the crew member who was chumming [throwing food bait] on the port side.” According to the Guardian, the nine-foot, half-ton shark found itself flailing across the vessel, destroying equipment and struggling to return to the water. Researchers used a hose to keep the shark hydrated during the hour-long period before rescue workers could attend to the crew and return the shark to the water using ropes and a crane. Perhaps if the research team had used music from AC/DC’s “Back In Black” album — shown to be preferred listening for great whites, according to an Australian study — instead of fish bait to attract the sharks, they would have avoided the uninvited boat guest. This isn’t the first time a shark has startled humans with its jumping abilities. Just last month, a shark jumped out of the waves and over a surfer at New Smyrna Beach, in Florida. And a husband-and-wife photography team has spent years in Africa capturing images of the great white shark “flying” up to ten feet from the ocean to snatch its prey.
