It’s certainly been a while since Bang & Olufsen’s given any love to its gorgeous (but pricey) BeoSound 5 , but refining self-proclaimed perfection takes… well, about three years. The more affordable $3,350 BeoSound 5 Encore carries over the svelte 10.4-inch LCD / scroll wheel toting controller from its predecessor , but nixes the BeoMaster music server requirement, allowing it to run headless (and in turn save you bookodles of cash). So how does one play tunes if it rides solo? With a bevy of new connectivity options: content can now be slung over USB (be it via a “mobile device,” thumb key or hard drive), from a NAS, over A2DP Bluetooth, or from one of 13,000 internet radio stations. It’ll ship in August, which’ll leave you plenty of time to count those pennies, and perhaps to ponder why it couldn’t spring for finer graphics in the video that awaits you beyond the fold. According to the numbers, 75 percent of new subscribers were picking streaming only plans, while the total number of people on the hybrid DVD / streaming plan had actually decreased slightly, even as it breached 25 million subscribers worldwide. Of course, it did notice the intense backlash to the new rates, but predicts that after the hit of cancellations by the end of the third quarter it will still have 22 million people subscribed to streaming, 15 million total subscribed to DVDs, and about 12 million customers with both. Waiting on that Facebook integration ? Other details include confirmation it will not look into purchasing Hulu Plus , and that it’s still negotiating a renewal of its deal with Starz. In a special installment of “The Last Word” following Barack Obama's debt ceiling address to the nation Monday, the “Hardball” host said, “I thought the President used a couple of words we’re familiar with: 'Fair and balanced.' It was like a Fox commercial” (video follows with transcript and commentary): LAWRENCE O’DONNELL, HOST: Chris, you’re reaction to first the President’s speech. CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, I thought the President used a couple of words we’re familiar with: “Fair and balanced.” It was like a Fox commercial there. I thought that was interesting. Fair then balanced then fair again then balanced again, over and over again to make a case for his position. For the record, Obama said the word “fair” three times, and “balanced” seven times, but never in the same sentence. Is Matthews now so fixated on Fox that any use of those words – no matter how separated – makes him uncomfortable? I wonder what the going rate is for curing Foxphobia.
