Turkey blamed after defector is returned to Syria

Lieutenant Colonel Hussein al-Harmoush was first senior military officer to defect during anti-Assad uprising The first senior military officer to defect during the Syrian uprising has been arrested by regime forces after disappearing from Turkey, and is set to appear on state television, prompting opposition activists to claim he had been betrayed by his hosts as part of a deal. Lieutenant Colonel Hussein al-Harmoush, who defected in June with senior members of an army unit responsible for a crackdown in the town of Jisr al-Shighour, went missing from a refugee camp in southern Turkey two weeks ago. He had been received by Turkish officials as one of thousands of refugees who had fled Jisr al-Shighour and a series of security sweeps that followed. He had called several times for other Syrian forces to follow his lead. The Syrian Arab news agency said Harmoush’s “confession” was scheduled to be broadcast on Thursday night. Wissam Tarif from the human rights organisation Avaaz said he had been told that Turkish officials had traded Harmoush for nine members of the PKK Kurdish militant group, which Turkey has proscribed as a terrorist organisation. “We have heard from the Kurds that there has been a deal done,” he said. “The Turks have been extremely interested in finding ways to clearly define the Kurdish role inside the [Syrian opposition] transitional council.” A spokesman for the Turkish government said that he had no information about Harmoush. When asked on Thursday in Cairo about the missing officer, Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, did not respond. Turkey has been a crucial base for the Syrian opposition, which on Thursday announced the formation of a 140-member transitional council, in an effort to provide a unified voice and eventually an alternative to four decades of strongman rule in Syria. After six months of uprising in Syria, which has been met by a relentless crackdown by government forces, other regional states are also trying to take a stake in nascent opposition political groupings. Both Qatar and Iran have offered to hold summits, along with France, which is calling for President Bashar al-Assad to leave office. The Syrian regime consistently casts the uprising as a series of running battles between security forces and terrorist groups of Islamists, which it claims are being backed by neighbouring states, among them Saudi Arabia and Israel. Tarif said there was no evidence that either funds or weapons were flowing into Syria. He said security forces were facing sustained armed resistance in the city of Homms only, with most other parts of the restive country under the control of the military. “Assad made a mistake in 2001 when he gave out weapons to people as part of a Golan Heights [protection] force,” he said. “It’s these weapons that are being used now and a lot of them appear to have made their way to Homms. It is the one place that people are shooting back.” Meanwhile, the former attorney general of Hama, Adnan Mohammed al-Bakkour, on Thursdayappeared on a video released on the internet, in which he rebuffed regime claims that he had been forced to make an earlier video resigning from his post and denouncing the ongoing crackdown. In the short video Bakkour reaffirmed his earlier insistence that he had defected to the opposition – the most senior non-military official to do so since the uprisings began. International groups believe more than 2,600 people have been killed in the crackdowns. Between 400 and 600 members of the security forces have also been killed, although observers believe that large numbers of them have been defectors killed by loyalist units. Gunfire resounded through part of the Syrian capital, Damascus, where the local co-ordinating committees, which act as an umbrella group for the opposition, say up to five people were killed. Security has been intense in Damascus – the political heart of the Allawite clan, which is led by the Assad family – and demonstrations have not achieved the same size or reach there. Several Syrian families were reported to have been forced to make declarations that “armed gangs” had killed their sons during recent fighting. Pantech Breakout to make its LTE debut September 22nd?

With a powerhouse like the Motorola Droid Bionic now lodged firmly on Verizon’s 4G lineup, we’re not expecting very many folks to be downright impressed by the Pantech Breakout . The latest offering on Big Red’s LTE network appears to be ready for its emergence in a week. The folks over at Droid-Life not only got their hands on a full spec sheet of the device, they also have come across the user manual, available for download at the source link. It looks like the Breakout will offer a 4-inch WVGA display, Gingerbread, a 1GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 1,500mAh battery and a 5MP rear camera paired up with a VGA front-facing video chat cam. No pricing is mentioned, though Pantech has a track record of being a budget manufacturer, so we’re thinking this is aimed directly at the lower end of the LTE price spectrum. If all goes this doc’s way, we’ll be seeing the new device on September 22nd. Who’s in? Palin-Bashing Author on Today Show: She’s a Cocaine-Using ‘Mean Girl’ Who Uses Her Children as ‘Props’

Touting a taped interview with Sarah Palin stalker and author Joe McGinniss on Thursday's NBC Today, fill-in co-host Savannah Guthrie proclaimed: “Stunning allegations made about Sarah Palin in a bombshell book. Is she really the hockey mom she claims to be? How strong is her marriage to Todd?…Does she use her children as props?” [ Audio available here ] McGinniss, promoting his newly released book that amounts to an anti-Palin screed, declared the former Alaska governor to be “An utter fraud. An absolute and utter fraud.” Guthrie responded: “You call her a tenth grade mean girl.” McGinniss went further: “Oh, that's – those are kind words compared to a lot of what you would hear in Wasilla today. The thing that I found, Savannah, that really surprised me, was that the people who know her best like her least.” View video after the jump Guthrie presented McGinniss's outrageous and unfounded accusations against Palin as shocking revelations: “McGinniss describes a rocky Palin marriage, with Todd and Sarah fighting incessantly and threatening divorce, something they've denied in the past. Another bombshell, McGinniss writes that both Todd and Sarah have used cocaine in the past…” Guthrie noted that the cocaine use “has not been verified” and challenged McGinniss on the claim: “How do you substantiate something like that?” McGinniss stood by the smear: “Well, you talk to somebody who snorted it with her and you talk to many of Todd's friends who describe him as having been on the end of the straw frequently in his youth. I'm not saying that Todd and Sarah Palin today abuse cocaine or even use it. But there's no question that they both did at one point in their lives.” Despite Barack Obama having actually admitted to cocaine use in his memoir, 'Dreams of My Father,' Today never touched the issue, except on December 13 and 14 of 2007, suggesting that a Clinton campaign surrogate mentioning the “youthful” drug use was a nasty smear against then-Senator Obama. Earlier in the segment, Guthrie highlighted attacks on Palin's motherhood: “McGinniss says talking to those who know Palin convinces him there is much less than meets the eye. He accuses the famed hockey mom of using her children as props and reports she was not much of a mother at all.” McGinniss added that people he talked to insisted that “Sarah Palin was virtually nonexistent as a mother.” In addition to all of that innuendo and gossip, Guthrie made to sure mention: “McGinniss also quotes friends who speak of a sexual encounter Palin had with basketball star Glen Rice in 1987, while she was a sports reporter for a local Anchorage station.” Near the end of the segment, Guthrie sums up McGinniss's vicious attacks: “[He] portrays Palin as hands off when it came to governing Alaska, but a ruthless political opportunist who crushed her enemies and rarely lived up to the fiscal conservative image she championed.” McGinniss then asserted: “At best she's a hypocrite.” Guthrie pressed him to go further: “And at worst?” He replied: “At worst, she's a vindictive hypocrite.” Concluding the interview, Guthrie wondered: “Do you think you were fair to her in the book?” McGinniss argued: “I think I was as fair as I could possibly have been, given the fact that she told all the people who were closest to her not to talk to me.” This is not the first time NBC has provided a forum for McGinniss to spew his anti-Palin venom. On the June 1, 2010 broadcast of Today , co-host Matt Lauer conducted a live interview with McGinniss, who proceeded to rant about Palin objecting to him moving in next door to her in Wasilla: “She has pushed a button and unleashed the Hounds of Hell, and now that they're out there slavering and barking and growling. And that's the same kind of tactic and I'm not calling her a Nazi, but that's the same kind of tactic that the Nazi troopers used in Germany in the '30s.” Here is a full transcript of Guthrie's September 15 interview with McGinniss: 7:01AM ET TEASE: SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: Also ahead, a new book about Sarah Palin that was controversial before even one word was written. That's because the author moved into a home right next door to the Palins in Wasilla while he was researching it. And the former Alaska governor will not like what he has written about her. But does the author have an ax to grind? We're going to talk to him exclusively.

Sony Alpha NEX-7 hands-on preview (video)

There are some cameras that we would be willing to use in a bind, some that we wouldn’t hesitate to shoot with, and a very select few that would motivate a cross-country journey, just for the chance to spend a few days behind the lens. Sony’s Alpha NEX-7 falls within that incredibly unique final category — in fact, we’ve done just that, flying from New York to San Diego to go hands-on with one of only a half-dozen pre-production samples to have landed on American soil. After seeing a very early NEX-7 prototype a few months ago, it didn’t take much convincing to get us on a plane. Sony’s 24.3 megapixel APS-C masterpiece represents a giant leap forward for the interchangeable lens market, theoretically capable of capturing images identical in quality to its much larger Alpha A77 counterpart, but in a body only slightly larger than the NEX-C3. Pair that image quality with an XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, a revamped tri-navi interface, standard hot-shoe, 1080 / 60p AVCHD video, microphone input, and a built-in flash, and you have one very worthy compact DSLR replacement. That said, the NEX-7 kit’s $1,350 price tag is far more than many are willing to spend on a camera. But is that premium pricing justified? Jump past the break to find out. Glenn Beck: 9/11 Memorial A ‘Complete And Total Disgrace’ For Not Having First Responders

Glenn Beck launched the next phase of his career on Monday with the premiere of his new network and his two-hour Web TV show. Beck is banking on the Web to help him maintain his status as one of the country’s influential (and controversial) media figures. His new show looked and felt nearly identical to his Fox News show, from the set to Beck’s emotional, freewheeling monologues. The difference, of course, is that he has complete control over the program. As he put it, “if it doesn’t work, I’m flat broke. But I don’t owe anyone a dime.” He told his audience that he would never pander to them because he did not consider them “morons,” and that he would always tell them the truth. Beck spent much of his first hour on the 9/11 anniversary. Unsurprisingly, he zigged where others have zagged. Beck said that he found it to be a “complete and total disgrace” that the first responders who came to the site of the attacks were not invited to the 10th anniversary memorial. The city said there was not enough room to accommodate them because of the number of family members and security at the site. Beck felt that this was a shoddy excuse. He also called the lack of clergy at the memorial “a slap in God’s face.” “I think they’ve tainted this ceremony, tainted this space,” he said. He also criticized the government and the developers of the new World Trade Center for a variety of other sins, including not leaving the lights of the tower on all night to honor the attacks and building the tower so slowly. “The memory of 9/11 has been bastardized,” he said. Later, Beck got choked up at several points recounting 9/11, and he brought on some of the first responders who had apparently not been at the anniversary memorial on Sunday. Beck also weighed in on the controversy surrounding Paul Krugman’s recent blog post on the attacks, which many conservatives have condemned for saying that 9/11 has become “poisoned” by political exploitation. “I notice that the points he made are nearly identical to the points made on a blog on AlJazeera.com,” he said. “Al Jazeera and the New York Times are one and the same, finally. Welcome to GBTV, where we can finally say that we are very, very different from Al Jazeera.” RELATED VIDEO:
