T-Mobile G2 trouble roundup: loose hinges, missing storage?

You know the drill — new handset, new problems. It’s pretty much inevitable that sporadic reports of bugs and hardware problems are going to start popping up by day two of any major phone launch, and sure enough, complaints are starting to circulate on two biggies for the G2 . First off, some of the phones are shipping with loose hinges; the most obvious symptom is that holding it upside down causes the screen to hang down, but perhaps more annoyingly, holding it at some angles causes the screen to snap shut if it’s open — still not a huge deal since most humans don’t use their phones upside down, but it seems like they could’ve tightened up a few springs to prevent this from happening. Secondly — and more strangely — at least some G2s in the field appear to have half the promised storage space of 4GB, clocking in at a total of 2GB, which just happens to be the amount promised on the phone’s Desire Z doppelganger. We’re not sure how that kind of mix-up happens… but if it’s legit, T-Mobile’s got to take back the units or offer really big microSD cards to affected customers, if you ask us. More on this as it develops — and let us know your experiences so far in comments. [Thanks to everyone who sent these in] Continue reading T-Mobile G2 trouble roundup: loose hinges, missing storage? Sky’s 3D TV channel launches in the UK

You’ve seen it explained by none other than Stephen Fry and — if you’re in the UK, that is — you can now finally check out Sky’s brand new 3D TV channel for yourself. That’s the first such channel in the UK, and it will be broadcasting a range of programming from movies to football (also known as “soccer” to some) for 14 hours a day — it kicks things off today with the Ryder Cup. To get the channel, however, you’ll have to sign up for the top-end Sky World HD package, which will run you

Seat’s Ibe concept is the electric sport coupe of our dreams we’ll probably never wake up to

Seat doesn’t have much of a presence here in the US. In fact, we’re sure 10 out of 10 ‘Mericans would mispronounce the Spanish company’s name given the chance. (It’s “SAY-at,” for the record.) And that’s totally fine, because at this point Seat largely produces generally boring VW-based hatchbacks, sedans, and vans. The Ibe concept, however, is good reason to get a little more familiar with the brand. Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show , this curvaceous coupe offers 2+2 seating and a deliciously lithe 2,425lb curb weight, doubly notable due to the batteries required to spin its entirely electric underpinnings. The heart is a 102hp motor with 148lb/ft of torque, offering a top speed of 100mph, 81 miles of range, and a 0-60 time of about 10 seconds. Okay, so that’s performance more in-line with Honda’s CR-Z than Tesla’s Roadster , but the weight and torque should make it a blast to drive — assuming it ever sees production. If it does it certainly won’t be filled with the lovely white interior pictured after the break. Imagine trying to keep that clean… Continue reading Seat’s Ibe concept is the electric sport coupe of our dreams we’ll probably never wake up to Seat’s Ibe concept is the electric sport coupe of our dreams we’ll probably never wake up to originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 01 Oct 2010 09:04:00 EDT. Apple TV restores in iTunes via micro-USB, UI hacked onto iPod touch (video)

It sure didn’t take long for the dev community to hack into Apple TV’s iOS build. One of the first payouts is a port of Apple TV’s “lowtide” 10-foot user interface to an iPod touch as briefly demonstrated in the first video after the break. While not very useful on such a small display, that could change when ported to the iPad’s bigger 10-inch display. In fact, that might be Apple’s plan according to our friend Erica Sadun who’s been busily spelunking the Apple TV’s disk image. She posits that the iPad could launch the lowtide UI when responding to AirPlay requests in a future iOS build. Another minor victory was achieved by TUAW reader Arix who spliced the Apple TV’s AirPlay daemon onto a jailbroken iPhone 3GS thus allowing it to receive AirPlay streams (second video). But the best news of all, perhaps, is the ability to restore the Apple TV in iTunes by connecting its micro-USB port to your computer. That means that existing PC- and Mac-based jailbreak tools can be updated to work over the connection. In fact, TinyUmbrella has already been updated to backup the Apple TV’s SHSH blobs in order to preserve your ability to downgrade in the future. With 8GB of storage and 256MB of RAM to play with, we suspect this little media puck will become quite the developer playground, with or without Apple’s consent. QNAP intros 1080p-capable NMP-1000P network multimedia player

It’s a minor refresh, but a refresh nonetheless. If you’ll recall, we saw the original NMP-1000 break cover at CeBIT 2009 , and now that we’re 1.5 years in the future, the QNAP NMP-1000P is making its debut for those who crave 1080p. Judging from the exterior, little has changed from then until now, but the revamped innards may be of interest — there’s a Sigma Designs SMP8643 SoC, a 667MHz CPU with floating point processor, support for 1080/24p playback and WiFi integration if you spring for an optional adapter. You’ll also get a revised user interface, local and internet-based content streaming and room for a user-supplied 3.5-inch SATA hard drive, not to mention compatibility with just about every file format under the sun. Mum’s the word on pricing and availability, but we’re guessing it’ll be out on shelves somewhere prior to the holidays. A TRiBuTe To JeRRY

I was very saddened to learn that Jerry Raferty passed away today at the age of 62. Jerry wrote the classic song “Stuck in the Middle” which will also be remembered as the sound track for the famous interrogation scene in Tarantino’s classic Reservoir Dogs. Jerry also wrote the classic tune “Baker Street” which was a rare popular tune featuring an up front saxophone riff. I had occasion to communicate… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : zero hedge Discovery Date : 08/05/2010 16:00 Number of articles : 23
