TomTom maps get loaded onto HTC Locations, promise ‘zero-wait navigation experience’

Look out, Google Maps Navigation — here comes a little friendly competition from across the pond. While we’d heard the term HTC Locations bandied about a bit during the company’s London launch of the Desire HD , now it looks as if both HTC and TomTom are ready to make their newfound friendship official. TomTom will be partnering with HTC in order to provide maps for phones loaded with HTC Locations, which is hailed as a new mapping system that results in a “zero-wait navigation experience.” Initially, at least, it’ll only be available on the new HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z smartphones in Europe and Asia, but the outfit promises to extend that to a wide variety of future phones and geographies. It should be noted, however, that while map and location content come preloaded on HTC Locations, turn-by-turn by guidance has to be purchased separately. Nokia ends talk of Symbian^4, adopts HTML5 in Qt framework

Things are turning upside down in Espoo today. Besides, earnings and reported job cuts of some 1,800 employees, Nokia also announced that it’ll be streamlining its development strategy to unify environments for Symbian and MeeGo. Nokia’s new approach calls for the adoption of Qt, and only Qt , as its application development framework from today onward. Here’s what that means for new N8 owners: You can buy a Nokia smartphone confident that any improvements introduced later to the Symbian platform, such as the user interface, can be made available to download on your device as well. No need to wait for Symbian^4 – the improvements we were planning for Symbian^4 will be introduced as and when they become available. In fact, we will no longer be talking about Symbian^3 or Symbian^4 at all – it will be one constantly evolving and constantly improving platform. Sounds like a smart move to us. After all, it’s Symbian’s UI, and not the OS, that we have the most trouble with — an issue that Nokia readily concedes . So the faster they can improve it — even pieces of it — the better. Nokia also announced support for HTML5 web content and applications for the Symbian and MeeGo platforms in both Qt and the browser. Click through for the press release and to hear Rich Green, Nokia CTO, discuss the new strategy. Eigenharp controls WiFi lamp with a little Arduino assistance (video)

We’ve already seen what the Eigenharp (and smaller Eigenharp Pico) can do on its own but, as the folks from Studio Imaginaire have now shown, that’s only just the beginning of what’s possible. With a little help from the oh-so-versatile Arduino , they’ve paired the instrument with a WiFi-enabled RGB lamp that — you guessed it — changes colors when you play the Eigenharp. Ready for an audio-visual feast? Turn down the lights and head on past the break. Tachyon announces 720p Tachyon XC HD helmet cam, excites us with a Picatinny rifle mount (video)

Iron sights? Only for newbs. Holo sights? Much nicer — at least until someone pulls an EMP. Picatinny-mounted camera? Not something you’re going to find in Call of Duty , soldier, but soon something you can get for real courtesy of Tachyon. That company was the first to offer a consumer-friendly(ish) 3D POV experience by turning a pair of their cameras into sort of Siamese affair , and now it’s enabling hunters, soldiers, officers of the law, and anybody who likes shooting stuff to get an up-close recording of exactly what the heck they’re shootin’ at. When we reviewed those 3D cameras we weren’t exactly smitten with the VGA quality, but hopefully the 720p sensor in the new Tachyon XC HD tackles that. It’s built into the same shell that struck us as being hugely durable before, and now it’s even more so, rated waterproof to 100 feet. The new camera will set you back $179, matching GoPro’s recent HD Hero 960 , while that Picatinny rail mount is $27 — unless you’re a member of law enforcement or the military, in which case it’ll be free. Full details in the PR below, as is a fun video of a little GunCam action. HTC 7 Mozart review

Out of all the Windows Phone 7 launch partners, HTC’s obviously been the most hard-working kid in Mr. Ballmer’s sculpture class. So here’s the question: which of the five launch devices is the Taiwanese company’s best work? Well, there’s no such thing as a perfect phone, but we dare say the 7 Mozart’s the most stylish out of the lot. Not convinced? Flip the phone around and you’ll see its two main selling points: its aluminum unibody construction (as applied on the Nexus One and Legend ), and its 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash (as opposed to 5 megapixels with LED flash on the other WP7 devices). Will these goodies suffice to win WP7 fanatics over? Join us after the break to find out. This review is primarily of the HTC 7 Mozart hardware. Check out our full review of Windows Phone 7 for our thoughts on the OS. Samsung plotting a single platform to connect TVs and phones

Samsung’s mad, monied quest to “free the TV apps” may not stop at your couch — the electronics manufacturer says it’s looking to loop in cell phones as well. “We plan to have a single platform for Samsung TV and phones,” a VP told Reuters , without providing further details, though we have to wonder if it might cross swords with the Media Hub video-on-demand software the company’s pushing in the tablet and smartphone space. Apple TV hacked to run weather app

Well, that didn’t take long. Greenpois0n jailbroke the the new Apple TV just yesterday , and PwnageTool 4.1 this afternoon , and we’ve already got what appears to be the first custom software successfully running on the device. As you can see, it’s a simple weather app, designed by a tiny software firm called nitoTV, but it’s a harbinger of things to come when developers get cracking on the Apple TV in earnest. See a picture of nitoTV’s custom launcher after the break, while your subconscious frantically tries to figure out what the four cities in the above pic could possibly have in common.
