“Why is it okay for Nina to express opinions, as she has tartly, sharply, unashamedly and openly” while serving as “an honored correspondent” for NPR, while Juan Williams, “because he expresses his opinions, gets canned from NPR?” So Charles Krauthammer demanded while sitting Friday with Totenberg on the same Inside Washington set. “In fact, the standard ought to be lower in the case of Juan because he’s an analyst, whereas Nina is a correspondent.” Krauthammer had picked up on NPR CEO Vivian Schiller’s contention that the network had canned Williams because he violated the policy that “news analysts may not take personal public positions on controversial issues; doing so undermines their credibility as analysts, and that's what's happened in this situation.” An uncomfortable Totenberg asserted “it’s a very, very difficult line to draw. And NPR tries to draw it, in my view, using rules that don’t exist anymore.” To which, Krauthammer wondered: “But what’s the difference between you and Juan expressing opinions? You on this show, and him on Fox?” He condemned NPR: “It’s completely illogical and hypocritical.” (Audio: MP3 clip ) read more

Continue reading …The definition of a good friend is someone who, if you say to them “Gee, I’d really like a foot pedal to advance my overflowing Google Reader feeds,” turns around and builds you one. From scratch. In this way we know that modder Matt Richardson is a good friend, as that’s what he crafted out of a little electric pedal and a disused keyboard (of the Dell variety). It’s not the most complex hack we’ve ever seen, but it is a good one, and he’s happy to show you exactly how to do it in the video below. Oh, and the friend’s response? You can see it for yourself at the end of the embed. You have to have Hitler, so let's put Hitler out there,” as if that caveat lessened the vulgarity of his impending comparison, on Friday night’s Real Time actor/director/writer Rob Reiner ( IMDb page ) contended all the Tea Party needs to match Adolph Hitler is a charismatic leader: He wasn’t a majority guy, but he was charismatic and they were having bad economic times – just like we are now – people were out of work, they needed jobs and a guy came along and rallied the troops. My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader, because all they're selling is fear and anger and that's all Hitler sold. “I’m angry and I’m frightened and you should hate that guy over there.” “Right,” Bill Maher chirped in as Reiner, to applause from HBO's Los Angeles audience, declared: “And that’s what they’re doing.” (Apparently, that means he at least doesn’t consider Sarah Palin to be a Hitler-like charismatic leader.) In the last few days, a flurry of new Microsoft-powered devices have hit the market, boasting slight differences, but all looking and acting largely the same. We’ve taken a deep dive on the operating system itself, the Omnia 7 , Optimus 7 , Mozart , HD7 , and Surround (phew!) — now it’s time to focus on the, er… Focus. The device itself has a lot in common with its European brother, the Omnia 7, boasting the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 8GB of internal storage, 1GHz CPU, and 5 megapixel camera. The device will soon go on sale in America for $199.99 on AT&T’s network — in fact, it’s the only Windows Phone 7 device you’ll be able to buy when they go public on November 8th. But is it really worth your hard earned cash when there are so many other options in the market? Read on for the full Engadget review to find out! This review is primarily of the Samsung Focus hardware. Check out our full review of Windows Phone 7 for our thoughts on the OS. Griffith started Onya Cycles , an internal project of OtherLab , and the result is the Front End Ladder, the tricycle that does 20 mph (the legal limit for this type of vehicle) and can carry you plus up to 150 pounds. It’s got a basket in front that can hold groceries as well as your children, and a custom steering mechanism that keeps the trike (and you) from tipping over on tight t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

There are, of course, a host of other changes caused by the warming climate, many of which consistently fly under the radar. For instance, climate change appears to be making waves bigger and steeper in oceans around the world. I caught up with Susan Casey, who spe… Read the full story on TreeHugger

This Forkless Cruiser, aka Phantom Bike, looks at first glance like the front wheel is being steered magically (check out the video below). It’s a cool effect, and even when you know how it works, it still looks strangely cool. More photos below…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
