And if your company is big enough and has enough political clout it might get one too: The Obama Administration recently handed out 111 Obamacare waivers to special US companies… And, they’re hiding this from the American public. It takes 6 clicks to find out this information on the government’s health care website. Unfortunately, if you’re a small business or you don’t have the right connections you can’t get a waiver for your company. That’s the new reality under the Obama-Pelosi regime. Time to repeal it and start over with something that makes sense.

Although he was likely taking a swipe at former governor Sarah Palin with the reference, Paul Krugman on Sunday recommended “death panels” as a means of helping to balance the federal budget. In a Roundtable discussion on ABC's “This Week,” the New York Times columnist said of what recently came out of the President's deficit commission, “Some years down the pike, we're going to get the real solution, which is going to be a combination of death panels and sales taxes” (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Elgato EyeTV Netstream Sat brings satellite TV streaming to your iPad

Folks on this side of the pond will unfortunately miss out on this one, but our friends in the UK will soon be able to get their hands on Elgato’s new EyeTV Netstream Sat box and make everyone else a bit envious. It will not only let you stream Freesat satellite TV to any computer on your home network, but straight to your iPad as well with Elgato’s EyeTV app (though not your iPhone or iPod touch, it seems). That sort of streaming has been possible before but, as Pocket-lint notes, you previously had to keep your computer on to stream satellite video to your iOS device. Look for the device to start shipping on November 22nd for

HBO's Bill Maher is clearly still reeling from the Democrat disaster in the midterm elections. On Friday's “Real Time,” the host compared America to a dog that “cannot understand actual words,” only “understands fear,” and can't have issues explained to it (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Netflix headed to ‘select Android devices’ early next year

Netflix has always been something of a fickle beast, lavishing treats upon just one platform at a time, but now that iOS , Windows Phone 7 and every game console under the sun are streaming its video, the firm’s finally turned its gaze on Android. Come early 2011, Netflix will appear on “select Android devices,” according to the company’s official blog, which also promises a “standard, platform-wide solution” for Android in the unspecified future. What took so long, and why will Netflix be limited to particular handsets when it first rolls out? “The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android,” says the blog, stating piracy concerns. Apparently content holders aren’t too keen on making movies available unless devices have DRM baked right in, so the solution is equip new phones with padlocks one at a time. Expect next year’s high-end Android devices to have “Netflix” as a nice big bullet point. Screen Grabs: it’s WP7 product placement overload, make no Bones about it (video)

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com . Okay, Microsoft , we get it. Fictional characters just love Windows Phone 7 . They can’t string three scenes together without pulling up Maps or trying to force the phrase ” Bing it ” into our vernacular. This time it’s Bones star Emily Deschanel, aka Dr. Temperance Brennan, whipping out an LG Quantum mid-interrogation to engage in a little textual activity — much to the mock ire of hunky co-star David Boreanaz. But don’t listen to him, he’s probably just jealous they didn’t have such gratuitous product placement back when he was still pretending to be a vampire. You know, back before vampires went all mainstream. Researchers Develop iSTD Test

In an effort to curb STD transfer across the pond, British doctors and computer engineers are currently developing small electronic devices that act as tiny STD testing kits, pluggable into a smart phone or computer that then allows the user to receive a diagnosis in minutes of which, if any, STDs they have. —JCL The Guardian: Mobile phones and computers will soon be able to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases under innovative plans to cut the UK’s rising rate of herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea among young people. Doctors and technology experts are developing small devices, similar to pregnancy testing kits, that will tell someone quickly and privately if they have caught an infection through sexual contact. People who suspect they have been infected will be able to put urine or saliva on to a computer chip about the size of a USB chip, plug it into their phone or computer and receive a diagnosis within minutes, telling them which, if any, sexually transmitted infection (STI) they have. Seven funders, including the Medical Research Council, have put £4m into developing the technology via a forum called the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. Apple outs new iOS 4.2 gold master that fixes iPad’s WiFi woes

Can you feel the iOS 4.2 anticipation building ? After all, it’s not every day your tablet computer gets upgraded to multitasking. Apple just seeded a new gold master of iOS 4.2 to developers (build 8C134b, as opposed to 8C134), which deals with the WiFi issue that apparently delayed the launch . As long as this build is free of any more killer bugs, that new copy of iOS should make its way to proletariat hardware soon — though obviously this week looks like a no-go.
