Never underestimate the power of Dreamcast to live on long past its intended expiration date (which, if you ask Sega, would have been around September 2007 ). The final flagship console from the Haus of Sonic is survived by a multitude of emulators propagating across a multitude of platforms… and well, here’s another. Drk||Raziel has posted some videos showcasing the work in progress of nullDCe for Android (on what we make out to be a AT&T Samsung Captivate ). The footage ranges from buggy ( Soul Calibur ) to pretty smooth ( Crazy Taxi ), but again, no one’s calling this a finished product. See it for yourself after the break. Continue reading …On Wednesday's Hardball, Chris Matthews brought on former Washington D.C. chancellor of public schools Michelle Rhee to discuss the state of public education in this country and praised her for work on the part of students but also warned her to “stay away from the right wing” because she was “too good to be grabbed by some ideological fool.” After Rhee explained to Matthews why public school students needed an organization like the one she founded, Students First, to counterbalance the influence of the teachers unions Matthews congratulated her for not becoming a tool of conservatives. Discussing public opinion of President Obama amidst his trials as President, liberal Watergate journalistic “legend” Carl Bernstein won the pity prize, asserted that Obama inherited a bigger mess than any other president since the 1930s. “Very few presidents have come into office inheriting what President Obama has taken on,” Bernstein opined on Wednesday's “Morning Joe.” “You'd have to go back, I think, to the thirties to really have a comparable situation,” Bernstein continued. Bernstein also blamed staunch GOP opposition and a broken political system for Obama's travails. “He's been trying to deal with it with a Republican opposition that has said 'no' to everything, and a political system – we keep going back to it – that simply is not functional or concerned with the national good.” The segment began with MSNBC anchor Chuck Todd and “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough agreeing that the current White House suffers more bad news than normal. “This White House always seems to have incoming,” Scarborough noted. “Just constant, and it's been constant from the day they walked in the front door.” read more

Not cool, and that wouldn’t be a problem with Dynamic Eye shades. The concept model above admittedly looks worse than that pair of knockoff Oakleys you got for $20 from some mall kiosk, but that’s hugely better than the early prototype demonstrated below, ready for its cameo in Revenge of the Nerds V: Nerds Hit the Beach . The concept is simple: each lens is an LCD that creates a dark box over the sun, blotting out the biggest source of glare and allowing the rest of the glasses to remain rather less tinted. They’re even said to work at night. It’s a project the company has been working on for years and still has many months of development left, but it feels close enough to ask for your help via Kickstarter. If you’re feeling generous, a $400 donation will ensure you get one of the first pairs to roll off the assembly lines — or you can just chip in $10 for now and get an e-mail telling you when you can order. Probably the safer way to go. Continue reading …We’ve been so wrapped up in Kinect hacks lately that we actually missed a Kinect non-hack that emerged last week. PrimeSense, who built the initial Project Natal reference hardware for Microsoft , has released its own open source drivers for the Kinect. PrimeSense is working with Willow Garage (best known for its open source ROS robot operating system ), and Side-Kick (a motion gaming startup) through a new OpenNI organization it set up, and the trio will be combining their powers for good. The OpenNI framework will cover low-level hardware support (drivers for actual cameras and other sensors), and high-level visual tracking (turning your body into a 3D avatar that kicks ass in a virtual world). This should be a boon to an already vibrant Kinect hacking community, and if the video above is any indication, we aren’t far from Kinect-level interaction and gameplay on our lowly PCs. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] PrimeSense’s OpenNI provides the best Kinect drivers yet, from someone who would know originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 15 Dec 2010 13:14:00 EDT. Continue reading …It may never ship at a price point we peons can stomach, but we’re no less thrilled to see RED’s fixed lens Scarlet being handled by a mere mortal on video. One Tonaci Tran was fortunate enough to brush into Jarred Land at a 3D workshop, and he just so happened to have a fully functional Scarlet on his person. Tori noted that the unit was a touch lighter than the Epic , and the top-mounted 5-inch touchscreen was obviously rather captivating. We’d bother going on (and on), but chances are you’ve already clicked through to catch the video. And if not… why?
