Inhabitat’s Week in Green: electric cars compared, molten salt solar, and a renewable Merry Christmas!

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green. Electric vehicles took the country by storm this week as both the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt were officially released to eager customers – if you’re still trying to decide between the two, check out our electric vehicle smackdown , which compares the two EVs based on their most important features. We also took a spin inside Honda’s electric Fit , and we showcased a futuristic home decked out with enough solar panels to completely charge an EV. The Sonex airplane also signaled bright horizons for electric aviation as it completed its maiden flight . Meanwhile California lit up the newswires by giving the green light for the state’s first molten salt solar energy project , and San Francisco announced a plan to generate 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. We also saw ten European countries forge a plan to build a massive renewable energy supergrid in the North Sea, and we showcased two hot examples of wearable teach that harness body heat – Fujitsu’s solar-thermal power band and a band-aid styled mp3 player . Finally, this week Inhabitat geared up for the holidays by showcasing 6 brands of dazzling LED christmas lights that save you energy and money, we showcased some innovative Christmas trees made with unusual materials , and we highlighted out favorite green gadget gifts for the holidays this year. And when all those presents are unwrapped we know exactly what to do with the aftermath – researchers have developed a way to recycle 100% of the material in plastic wrapping paper and artist Jason Rogenes wowed us with his incredible futuristic spaceships made from the styrofoam used to package electronics. YikeBike foldable electric bike now available for the low, low price of $3,595 (video)

The first time we saw the YikeBike we couldn’t help but think it was a little too stylistically shaped, a bit too svelte, and a lot too carbon fiber to actually exist in the real world as anything but a prototype. But now, over a year later, here we are looking at a little green “Add to cart” button on the company’s website. Yes, the 6 mile range, 15mph top speed foldable cycles are starting to roll out of the warehouse with an estimated ship date of just one week. The best news? The price is $3,595, far from cheap but about $2,000 less than they were originally estimated to cost and a downright bargain for something that offers this unique blend of bizarreness and fun. How much fun? Get a refresher course in the video after the break. Kinect and haptics combine at the University of Washington to let you feel the future (video)

Sure, looking at the future is great and all, and that’s what we feel like we’re doing with all these wonderful Kinect hacks we’ve been covering lately. But what about feeling the future, man? That’s what the kids at the University of Washington BioRobotics Laboratory are up to, taking the 3D images created by Microsoft’s gaming peripheral and combining that with a 3D haptic controller, what looks to be a SensAble Phantom to us. The result? A so-called “haptic handshake,” which looks even more uncomfortable than when Hank and Dean do their “Go Team Venture” routine. You can see both embedded after the break and decide for yourself. [Thanks, Jonas] Continue reading Kinect and haptics combine at the University of Washington to let you feel the future (video) Kinect and haptics combine at the University of Washington to let you feel the future (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Dec 2010 15:17:00 EDT. UK voice choir sings Please Retweet Me song for charity, probably has no idea what it means (video)

So here’s the deal: the UK Meningitis Trust wants to help raise awareness about the disease it’s dedicated to battling and has a 30-strong male voice choir at its disposal to do it with. How does it reach the widest possible audience? If your ideas include namedropping every major social media site set up over the last decade, a nod to the iPhone versus Android dichotomy, and the use of Yahoo as a bad pun, then you must be the guy responsible for putting together the video after the break. Congratulations, it’s awesome. The behind-the-scenes footage with these old crooners isn’t too terrible either. Chevy builds antenna into body of 2011 Camaro convertible, includes free bumpers for all (video)

We know all about the great woes that can befall a company when it tries to integrate an antenna into the body of its product, so we couldn’t resist covering Chevrolet ‘s latest attempt to do the same — but on a larger scale. Early versions of the 2011 drop-top Camaro found themselves rolling out and about with a rather unsightly appendage hanging off the rear, a big whip antenna that was a little too genuinely retro to go with the machine’s throwback styling queues. On most cars today the antenna is integrated into the rear windshield but, given the disappearing nature of this car’s roof, that wasn’t possible here. For help GM turned to two dedicated Antenna Engineers, Don Hibbard and Gregg Kittinger, who managed to find a way to bury the unsightly thing inside the svelte spoiler perched on the rear deck lid. Problem solved — well, except that XM and OnStar require a separate shark fin that can sadly still be seen hanging out on the trunk. Maybe the 2012 model will be totally fresh and clean. Shep Smith Asks How Senators Sleep at Night After Filibustering 9-11 First Responders Bill

Click here to view this media Looks like at least one person over at Fox News watched Jon Stewart’s segment with 9-11 first responders reacting to the Senate filibuster and decided to let everyone know how they felt about it. Via Mediaite : A wonderful moment of pure outrage–and classic television–from Shepard Smith on Fox News Friday afternoon as he and Chris Wallace waited for President Obama’s tax cut signing ceremony. Discussing the amount of money on “tax cuts for billionaires who don’t need them,” Smith railed against the very same lawmakers who somehow couldn’t get relief passed for 9/11 first responders. How do they sleep at night after this vote on Ground Zero first responders from 9/11? Are they going to get that done, or are we going to leave these American heroes out there to twist in the wind? Who’s going to hold these people’s feet to the fire? We’re able to put a 52 story building so far down there at Ground Zero, we’re able to pay for tax cuts for billionaires who don’t need them and it’s not going to stimulate the economy. But we can’t give health care to Ground Zero first responders who ran right into the fire? Went down there to save people? Do people know what this city was like that day? People were walking over bridges they were covered in ash they were running for their lives they were crying their family members were dead. And these people ran to Ground Zero to save people’s lives. And we’re not going to even give them medicine for the illnesses they got down there? It’s disgusting, it’s a national disgrace, it’s a shame and everybody who voted against should have to stand up and account for himself or herself. I’m glad Smith pointed out what an outrage this is, but like his cohort Peter Johnson Jr. , Smith didn’t bother to let the viewers know that it’s the Republicans blocking the bill.
