Dan Rather on CNN: Obama Inspired Protests in Egypt

On Monday's Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN, disgraced former CBS anchor Dan Rather attributed the current protests in Egypt to President Obama's June 2009 speech to the Muslim world in Cairo: ” He [Obama] fueled this uprising in Egypt. When he came to Cairo, let us remember, and he spoke of- listen, we stand for freedom and democracy and listening to people. The Egyptians believed his rhetoric ” [audio available here ]. Host Piers Morgan's segment with Rather aired 36 minutes into the 9 pm Eastern hour. He devoted the entire interview to the Egyptian issue. Near the end of the segment, the CNN personality asked, “If you were President Obama right now, what would you now say?” The former CBS Evening News anchor began by voicing his sympathy for the President: “I'm glad I'm not because it's a real dilemma.” He then placed himself in the Democrat's shoes: “I would quietly send word to Mubarak that his days are finished, that we will do our best by him. We appreciate what he's done, but events have moved past him. I would do that quietly. I wouldn't say that publicly.” [ Video embedded below the page break ] Rather continued with his theory about Obama's Cairo speech: RATHER: Speaking of President Obama- you know, in a way, he fueled this uprising in Egypt. When he came to Cairo, let us remember, and he spoke of- listen, we stand for freedom and democracy and listening to people. The Egyptians believed his rhetoric. The actions since then have not matched that . Morgan followed-up by noting one international critique of the American president: “Well, there are many in Israel, apparently- in the media- now saying that President Obama will go down as the president who lost Egypt, which is a pretty damning thing to be saying, from a country that's been protected, in many ways, by keeping Mubarak there.” The journalist replied with further advice for Obama: RATHER: Well, that would be a devastating commentary on this administration, but we haven't seen the last card- not by a long shot have we seen that. But I would think that President Obama would want to do a number of things. First of all, assess U.S. intelligence. Our intelligence and diplomatic core is top-heavy. It talks to the wealthy people in every country. It talks to the business people. It talks to the military people. We don't seem to be able to get the intelligence from the bottom-up- from the ground-up- and part of what's fueled this in Egypt are these day-to-day humiliations and insults, particularly with young people- police who want to bribe and kick over a fruit stand- that kind of thing. The cumulative effect of that leads to this kind of business. Now, in the case of Tiananmen Square, which I mentioned earlier, and the government eventually was willing to turn the guns on its own people, I would be very surprised if that happens in Egypt. But if I were President Obama- who am I to give him advice- but you asked- MORGAN: You know something? I wouldn't like to be him right now either. It is a very difficult situation. Dan, thank you very much for your time. RATHER: Thank you, Piers. Thank you very much. On the September 12, 2010 edition of The Chris Matthews Show, Rather saw the President's name as profitable to U.S. relations with the Muslim world : “On balance, and in the main, it's still a net plus in terms of the country's reputation.”

770,000 Gallons of Dispersant from BP Spill Didn’t Degrade

Photo: Chicago Press Release Perhaps one of the most controversial elements of the BP spill saga was the oil giant’s use of large quantities of chemical dispersent Corexit to attempt to break down the oil both spewing from the wellhead and on the slick on the ocean surface. The EPA told BP to stop the practice, but the company continued anyways, and nobody was willing to make them stop. The company maintained … Read the full story on TreeHugger

GMC’s SATIMO ATS system spins a Denali right round to ensure proper antenna placement (video)

As a certain company knows quite well, finding the right place to put an antenna can be harder than it looks. Rather than just slap one on the roof and call it a day, General Motors has created the SATIMO ATS, a near-field antenna testing system of the sort we’re used to spying in all those FCC photos . This one, however, is SUV-sized, as you can see in the video below. Workers for the General can drive a GMC Yukon Denali onto a turntable and spin it all around while 103 sensors test antenna placement, creating a 3D rendering of the resulting performance. It was the first such system in the world and will be the perfect place for our next Faraday rave. GoPro starts shipping $80 LCD BacPac for HD Hero, has no room for your lunch box (video)

Aiming your helmet camera and replaying footage is a problem on most models. The HD170 makes it easy, but then hits you with a lot of bulk. Contour is working on a viewfinder app for iOS and Android devices that will wirelessly stream video, but that’s not out yet. GoPro’s LCD BacPac, on the other hand, is shipping today. We spent a little quality time with one at CES , a tiny screen that clips on the back of a 1080p HD Hero and lets you see what’s being filmed and also play back what you’ve captured earlier. As you can see it adds about a quarter-inch of depth onto the camera but comes with a replacement back door to retain compatibility with all mounts. It’s shipping now for $80, making it a somewhat expensive accessory for a $300 camera. [H/t Heather ] Have you ever wondered if that petition you signed actually gets delivered? Or if it makes a difference? Well, last week Progressive Change Campaign Committee members delivered over 50,000 notes directly to Senator Harry Reid — thanking him for boldly opposing cuts to Social Security. And Senator Reid made some news at the meeting. TPM : At an event with progressive activists last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took major Social Security cuts and privatization completely off the legislative table. “As long as I’m the Majority Leader, I’m going to do everything within my legislative powers to prevent privatizing or eliminating Social Security,” Reid said. “I’ll simply say it’s off the table.” You can watch video of the event below, courtesy of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. The key quote comes at the end of the clip. Reid’s been a pretty staunch defender of Social Security, but this statement goes a bit further than previous ones. Most recently, on Meet the Press, he said he wouldn’t be a part of any effort to undermine the program. But now, he’s taken privatization and raising the retirement age off the table. Not only does this go further than what Reid has previously said on Social Security, but it goes much further than a number of Democrats in the Senate who are actively supporting cuts. Reid is holding the line on Social Security. Given the Republican held House and the president’s shall we say whishy-washyness on the subject, Reid’s strong stance could be crucial to protecting Social Security. There is a lot of work to be done though and we could use your help. Watch the video above and then join our effective campaign to protect Social Security. (full disclosure: I’m the Senior Online Campaigns Director at the Progressive Change Campaign Committee)

IntoNow app can tell what show you’re watching, won’t knock your Glee addiction (video)

If you’ve ever used an app like Shazam to detect a song playing on the radio you’re a long way toward knowing what the new IntoNow app can do. With just a few seconds of audio it can detect what you’re watching, give you plenty of information about that content, then let you add it to your Netflix queue. You can go on to share what you’re watching upon a plethora of social networks, even see what your friends are watching. It relies on a platform called SoundPrint, an accumulation of 266 years worth of content that is constantly growing, constantly indexing 130 channels in real-time. (Think of the punditry!) Check it out in the video below or just give it a download from the App Store . Right now it is iOS only, but we’re told Android and other flavors are on the way. Public Transportation as an Interactive String Instrument (Video)

Image: MTA.me Train Conductor, in the Musical Meaning of the Word Public transit is our favorite way of moving large number of commuters around (except for walking and biking, when that’s possible), but it’s also – surprisingly – the inspiration for a piece of interactive art. Alexander Chen has taken New York City’s MTA subway schedule and turned it into a kind of virtual string instrument: “the piece begins in realtime by spawning trains which departed in the last minute, then continues accelerating through a 24 hour loop. The visuals are based on Massimo Vignell… Read the full story on TreeHugger
