Bill O’Reilly Smacks Down George Stephanopoulos’ Pro-Obama Spin

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly on Tuesday dismissed the pro-Obama talking points repeated by Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos. After quoting the President, Stephanopoulos parroted, “And it's clear that the President and his team, there's a strategy here. They think that the Republican base is way outside of the mainstream right now.” An almost incredulous O'Reilly snorted, ” So, wait a minute, George. You're telling me, this is shocking to me, that the President doesn't like Republicans, that he's going to criticize Republicans. Come on .” [See video below. MP3 audio here .] O'Reilly also declared that Obama would lose: “I think that the economy is so bad that if the Republicans run a candidate with credibility, the President will lose, unless something happens.” Stephanopoulos uncritically repeated Obama's smears on Republicans: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Meanwhile, President Obama really going after this. You saw him in these fund-raisers out on the west coast. He said, he told them, “Has anybody been watching the debates lately? You have got a governor whose state on fire denying climate change. You have got audiences cheering at the prospect of somebody dying because they don't have health care and booing a service member in Iraq because they're gay. That's not reflective of who we are.” ABC News journalist Jake Tapper on Monday offered more context than his colleague. Tapper explained,

Food Crisis in East Africa: Exclusive Report From My Oxfam Trip

Several months ago I came across an article in the Wall Street Journal about a refugee camp that profoundly struck me. I was aware of the global food crisis, but the statistics this particular article stated were overwhelming. Dadaab, which I had never heard of before, is the largest refugee camp in the world. It was declared full occupancy in 2008, but has received between 600 and 1,500 Somali refugees daily since. These are victims of political conflict, severe drought and famine, and the population in these camps has now reached roughly 400,000. I tried to wrap my head around what the conditions of that camp must be like, how its occupants were surviving everyday life in the barren, arid landscape with the barest of essentials. How did anyone manage to source food or clean water? And what must the conditions be like in regards to sanitation? if(typeof AOLVP_cfg===’undefined’)AOLVP_cfg=[];AOLVP_cfg.push({id:’AOLVP_1183141749001′,’codever’:0.1, ‘autoload’:true, ‘autoplay’:false, ‘playerid’:’61371448001′, ‘videoid’:’1183141749001′, ‘width’:480, ‘height’:270, ‘stillurl’:’http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/brightcove/us/living/thatsfit/2010/yogaworks/yoga_singlepigeon_video_still_480.jpg’, ‘playertype’:’inline’,’videotitle’:’Food Crisis in East Africa: My Report From Oxfam Trip’,’videodesc’:’Scarlett Johansson reporting from East Africa’}); As an Ambassador of Oxfam since 2004, I knew that our organization must have a presence there. Sure enough, I learned that Oxfam has been working in Dadaab since 2009, providing water sanitation, building latrines, digging boreholes, laying pipe and constructing tap stands amongst other aid. We planned a trip for late September and decided to not only highlight the crisis amongst Somali refugees but another global crisis affecting the entire Horn of Africa, the worst drought the area has seen in over 60 years. Pastoralists, farmers and fisherman have seen their means of survival virtually die off, while entire communities are left in a state of flux and starvation with no means of relief. These communities are dependent on Oxfam’s relief for both emergency response and for long term sustainable solutions. The media’s spotlight on both of these crises is inconsistent and insufficient. These issues need to be addressed on a global scale immediately, as roughly 13 million people are at risk and most of Southern Somalia has been declared in a state of famine. I visited Dadaab, Turkana and Lodwar with Oxfam and wanted to write a journal with accompanying pictures for Huffpo. But after one day in the fields, I realized the scale of what we were witnessing was almost impossible to put into words and decided to do a video log over the three days time so that I might shed light on the crisis as well as Oxfam’s vitally important work. If you are inspired as I am and are able or would like to contribute to the cause, please help me raise funds by going to oxfamamerica.org/scarlett. Please remember that no amount is too small and Oxfam’s low administrative cost means that the maximum amount goes directly to effecting positive change in virtually millions of people’s lives.

Trial of Michael Jackson doctor begins in Los Angeles courtroom

Conrad Murray, a physician to the late pop singer, accused of delivering fatal dose of anaesthetic to Jackson The trial of the doctor charged over Michael Jackson’s death was due to open on Tuesday, complete with some star power and a worldwide audience. Dr Conrad Murray will appear in a packed Los Angeles courtroom, where opening statements and initial testimony will be heard. Murray is accused of delivering a fatal dose of anaesthetic to Jackson. The singer’s family, including his parents and many of his siblings, are expected to be present as dozens of reporters cover the case. Proceedings also will be televised and broadcast online. While much is known about Jackson’s June 2009 death, the trial will reveal new information and provide a detailed record of his final hours. Murray’s trial is expected to be the first time that the public hears – in the defendant’s own words – his account of what happened in the bedroom of Jackson’s rented mansion. By Monday evening, 15 satellite trucks and news vans were parked within a block of the courthouse. Prosecutors plan to call Jackson’s friend and choreographer, Kenny Ortega, as their first witness. During a pre-trial hearing on Monday night, Nareg Gourjian, a lawyer for Murray, claimed Jackson was unconscious backstage before his March 2009 London news conference for his This Is It concert series, and he appeared drunk during the announcement itself. Murray’s defence lawyers wanted a video of the news conference shown to jurors, but the judge in the case ruled against it. The defence team is widely expected to argue that Jackson was a drug addict whose habits led to his death. Gourjian said in court on Monday that Jackson’s March 2009 news conference began 90 minutes late because “Jackson was unconscious on the sofa.” He added that Jackson appeared “hungover”, citing the chief executive of concert promoter AEG Live, which was organising the shows. He argued it was “readily apparent from watching the video that Mr Jackson was under the influence”. But judge Michael Pastor, who is presiding over Murray’s trial, ruled that the tape should not be shown to jurors. Pastor said the video was irrelevant because it occurred months before Jackson died.
