Chris Matthews: Rick Perry Could Be ‘Bull Connor With a Smile’

Hardball host Chris Matthews on Tuesday smeared Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry as “Bull Connor with a smile,” referring to the segregationist Commissioner of Public Safety who famously used attack dogs and fire hoses on civil rights protesters in the '60s. Left-wing journalist Wayne Slater, who has previously lumped Tea Party protesters with the Holocaust museum shooter, attacked Perry as someone who talks about “states rights, states right, states rights” and “could make some voters, again, very nervous.” In response, Matthews excoriated, ” Yeah. This could be Bull Connor with a smile. ” [See video below. MP3 audio here .] As a reminder, Rick Perry is a GOP presidential candidate. Bull Connor, as PBS' Eye on the Prize miniseries explained, turned “high-pressure fire hoses and police dogs on them, creating some of the most indelibly violent images to date.” It should be noted that both Slater and Jim Hightower, Matthews' other liberal guest, laughed at the MSNBC anchor's Bull Connor joke. Earlier, Matthews, talking to Slater, derided Perry's attacks on Obama: “I know you're an objective reporter, but I smell birtherism about this guy. His attack on Obama isn't just policy. It's about the nature of the person who's president. It seems to me.” [Thanks to MRC intern Alex Fitzsimmons for the video.] A transcript of the August 16 exchanges can be found below: CHRIS MATTHEWS [to Wayne Slater]:

Chris Matthews: News Organizations Are ‘Going to Spend Every Nickel They Have’ Investigating Rick Perry

MSNBC's Chris Matthews is clearly afraid of Texas governor Rick Perry beating Barack Obama if he becomes the Republican presidential nominee. On Monday's “Hardball,” the host asked the Washington Post's Eugene Robinson, “Do you think the nation's newspapers and the big news organizations are now going to spend every nickel they have sending young people out there to go investigate this guy?” (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Your thought about Perry. You’re a political expert, I haven’t had a chance to, is this guy really the Perry on top of this cake right now? EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST: I think he is a formidable politician. He’s got experience. He's off like gangbusters. He immediately becomes a top tier candidate. And I think at the White House they are having to do recalibration today, and to think about, gee, maybe we will run against Perry instead of running against Romney. MATTHEWS: You’ve been an editor, for many years the top editor at the Post. Do you think the nation's newspapers and the big news organizations are now going to spend every nickel they have sending young people out there to go investigate this guy? ROBINSON: Absolutely. MATTHEWS: I think there is going to be a tremendous amount of investigation on this guy. ROBINSON: Absolutely. MATTHEWS: He better be clean as a whistle. Time is coming. He’s arrived. The time, the march of time has begun… ROBINSON: Well, it's hot in here. MATTHEWS: …for this guy. Anyway, thank you. If you don’t like the heat, stay out of the kitchen, Governor. Wouldn't it have been nice if Matthews, Robinson, and the rest of their colleagues behaved this way in 2007 and 2008? Maybe if they had, we'd have someone qualified in the White House now. Instead, having completely abdicated their journalistic responsibilities in order to assist the inexperienced junior senator from Illinois attain the highest office in the land, media members are now going to bring all forces to bear to discredit any serious challengers to ensure his reelection. This comes days after Matthews was jubilant at the thought of eleven of his twelve regulars on the syndicated program bearing his name claiming it's going to be easier for the Obama campaign to attack Perry than Romney. With all the time, energy, and money the press are – in Matthews and Robinson's view – willing to spend on investigating the Texas governor, it's a metaphysical certitude the White House will have plenty of ammunition to place in negative ads regardless of veracity or accuracy. Makes you seriously worry about the future of this nation witnessing such an unholy collusion between the media and our most powerful elected official.

Pat Buchanan Challenges Warren Buffett: ‘Set an Example and Send a Check for $5 Billion to the Federal Government’

The liberal media are predictably fawning over billionaire Warren Buffett's op-ed in the New York Times Monday calling for new taxes on the super-rich. This led MSNBC's Pat Buchanan on Monday's “Morning Joe” to challenge the Oracle of Omaha asking, “Why doesn’t he set an example and send a check for $5 billion to the federal government?” (video follows with transcript and commentary): PAT BUCHANAN: No, I’m writing a note to Warren Buffett. But look, I’m a little fed up with these people who come on, you know, their big op-eds, all these admonitions. Why doesn’t he set an example and send a check for $5 billion to the federal government? He’s got about $40 billion. You know, you had a plan up there, I talked to Howie Carr at Boston where the super-rich could contribute an extra amount. It was something like one-tenth of one percent did it. You get all this noise from these big rich folks. Let them send checks and set an example instead of writing op-eds. Indeed. Of course, the liberals in the media never seem to think about this hypocrisy. The folks at the Huffington Post were so excited about Buffett's call they featured it as a headline at their front page: Yahoo also had it featured prominently on its front page: Why doesn't every outlet that likes this idea follow Buchanan's lead and challenge Buffett to put his money where his mouth is and send the federal government a nice fat check?

Mark Halperin Declares Romney Winner of GOP’s Iowa Debate, Gives Gingrich C+

You really have to wonder what debate Mark Halperin was watching Thursday evening. Appearing on Friday's “Morning Joe,” the Time magazine and MSNBC political analyst declared former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney the winner of the Republican presidential debate in Iowa, and actually gave former House Speaker Newt Gingrich – who many thought stole the show – only a C+ (video follows with partial transcript and commentary): MARK HALPERIN, POLITICAL ANALYST FOR TIME MAGAZINE AND MSNBC: There were two candidates I think head and shoulders above everybody else: Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann. And the overall performance of the others in a pretty ragged two hours I don’t think changed very much. But Mitt Romney did a great job, and got pretty lucky. You’d think a guy who’s that big of a frontrunner would have been the main target, but as you saw in the opening clips, it really was Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty going back and forth. Halperin's point about nobody laying a glove on Romney is a valid one, and if this continues, the former Massachusetts governor will certainly benefit. However, giving Gingrich a C+ was absurd and in my view is indicative of how media members possibly fear the former Speaker more than anyone else on that stage Thursday evening. They know Gingrich would tear President Obama apart in a one-on-one debate, and that's their worst nightmare. That said, when former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele got his chance to respond, he also took exception to Halperin's assessment: MICHAEL STEELE: I think there’s a difference between what you, what you hear from the professional political class and the people out there last night on Twitter and so forth who thought Newt Gingrich did phenomenally well. I thought Newt Gingrich planted a flag last night. I think he acquitted himself well in many respects, substantively as well as pushing back on, you know, the whole idea that we’re going to come together and not do talking points and the first line of questions is right out of the talking point box. Indeed. For those that missed it, here was Gingrich's marvelous exchange with Fox News's Chris Wallace: Delicious. Getting back to Steele's assessment: STEELE: I was just looking at the grading there in terms of how people lined up. I thought that Newt did a solid B performance last night. In fact, if I had to pick a winner, I would give him that because the expectation was so low in that regard. Quite so. In fact, NewsBusters publisher tweeted the following halfway through the debate: At the debate's conclusion, Bozell gave his Twitter followers his scorecard: When informed of Halperin's assessment of Gingrich's performance, Bozell responded, “C+?? That’s ridiculous. He stole the show.” I couldn't agree more.
