Less than 24 hours after Salon's Joan Walsh trashed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Mormon faith, she was invited on MSNBC to attack him and his colleagues further. Appearing on Hardball , Walsh said of the GOP, "They’re writing off women, they're writing off Latinos, they’re writing off Asians, they’re writing off young people. It’s really the party of old white men basically" (video follows with transcript and commentary): JOAN WALSH: We’re talking about making the climate so horrible for immigrants that they will leave. That is, there’s a whole theory around it. And it’s quite right-wing. It’s not even just a funny word. It’s actual, it’s an actual policy and program where they’re, you know, passing all these laws to make people’s lives miserable. And they’re not going after the Latino vote. They really are, I mean, it is their last stand. It’s like they’re writing off women, they're writing off Latinos, they’re writing off Asians, they’re writing off young people. It’s really the party of old white men basically. Quite comically, the segment ended with host Chris Matthews saying, "Maybe we ought to have lie detector tests for these politicians. Wouldn't that be interesting?" I'm all for it, Chris. How 'bout you? Let's also have lie detectors for television anchors, hosts, and their contributors so that the public will know when folks supposedly giving them the news aren't telling the truth. Somehow I doubt there'd be a lot of takers in the liberal media ESPECIALLY at MSNBC.

Maybe Princeton professor Cornel West should redirect his get off the crack pipe suggestion to MSNBC's Chris Matthews. On Monday's Hardball , the host actually said with a straight face that John F. Kennedy is "the American president we Americans most want to see joining Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt up there on Mount Rushmore (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS: “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” appears in bookstores next Tuesday. It tells the story of the American president we Americans most want to see joining Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt up there on Mount Rushmore. Apart from drugs and/or alcohol being the culprit, one has to imagine Matthews was referring to a November 2009 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair online poll that asked the question, "If you could add a president to MOUNT RUSHMORE, which one of these would you pick?" Kennedy came in first at 29 percent in this highly unscientific poll placed at two extremely liberal websites where people could vote as many times as they wanted. Such surveys are typically looked upon with a grain of salt. This was especially the case here as the folks designing this poll actually put Barack Obama up as one of the answers. Despite him having only been in office for ten months, sixteen percent of respondents chose him. Nice poll to gauge public opinion by, don't you think? Significantly more scientific is a fairly comprehensive list of presidential rankings done since 1948 available at Wikipedia. To be sure, these kinds of polls normally get the opinion of academics, political scientists, and presidential historians that typically lean left, but they're far better than an online poll done by CBS and Vanity Fair. With that in mind, Kennedy's aggregate ranking in these surveys is eleven putting him well down the list of folks to be added to Mount Rushmore. Sorry, Chris, but this isn't something you're likely ever going to see no matter how many books you write about this man: For those interested, here's the aggregate top ten: Abraham Lincoln Franklin Delano Roosevelt George Washington Thomas Jefferson Teddy Roosevelt Woodrow Wilson Harry Truman Dwight Eisenhower (tie) Andrew Jackson (tie) James Polk Anticipating the question, Ronald Reagan's aggregate rank is 17. Remember: the folks doing the ranking are mostly liberals.

You have to wonder if a day has gone by since the September 7 GOP presidential debate without someone on MSNBC referring to audience members cheering when NBC's Brian Williams asked Texas governor Rick Perry about capital punishment in his state. Likely the most colorful description of this incident to date occurred on Monday's Hardball when host Chris Matthews said Republicans "look hot and horny for executions out in that Reagan library" (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: John Heilemann , I have to go through a riff right now, because I think you and I cover -- so as Sam does -- this incredible portrayal by the Republicans of themselves. First of all, they look hot and horny for executions out in that Reagan library debate. Then they talk about letting the guy on the gurney die because he doesn't have health insurance. Then they mock the gay soldier. And then you've got Bachmann out there saying, if you don't have health insurance, fine, you can go to the poorhouse. And now this guy saying, hip hip hooray for foreclosures! This party has become a cartoon of Ebenezer Scrooge or worse. They play right into the president's hands, and he couldn't be weaker in terms of the economy. And they want to make him, what, are they trying to save this presidency, these guys? JOHN HEILEMANN , NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Chris, there's nothing I like better than being on television with you when you’re using the word “horny.” Let’s just start, start with that. MATTHEWS: Okay, randy, better word. Go ahead. SAM STEIN, HUFFINGTON POST: No, stick with horny. Which is worse: people getting "hot and horny" over justice being served in their community, or a married man admitting on national television that he gets a thrill up his leg when another guy talks? That asked, it seems a metaphysical certitude that the badly misinterpreted and overhyped actions of audience members at these debates is going to be part of this campaign right through Election Day. With fresh allegations of a second rape occurring at an Occupy protest event, will Matthews and his ilk ever concern themselves with the truly abhorrent and illegal behavior happening on the other side of the aisle? Or will audience responses continue to rule the day?
