Indignant Norah O’Donnell Defends Obama’s Lack Of Leadership On Libya

If Time-magaziner-turned-WH-press-sec Jay Carney ever tires of defending Pres. Obama, Norah O'Donnell clearly seems ready to step in . . . When on today's Morning Joe Donny Deutsch described PBO as having a passive leadership style as evidenced by his approach to Libya, health care and other issues, an indignant O'Donnell piped up, defending the president's passivity. View video after the jump. Norah's point was that PBO couldn't risk a more aggressive approach, given that Americans remain at risk in Libya. Maybe so.

Chris Jansing Tries to Link Giffords Shooter With Fringe Right-Wing

MSNBC's Chris Jansing, referencing a report by the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) on “active U.S. hate groups,” asked Wednesday if the rise of radical right-wing groups coincided with the motives behind Jared Loughner's assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.). When asked about the “hate groups” report, guest Mark Potok of the SPLC immediately pointed to the rise of “radical right-wing groups” and attributed the rise to “resentment over the changing racial demographics,” “frustration over the lagging economy,” and “mainstreaming of conspiracy theories.” “The economy since the fall of 2008, of course, has really played into this in terms of unemployment, anger with the bailouts, and so on,” added Potok. “It's really ginned-up anti-government feeling, in many ways.”

Condescending ‘Morning Joe’ Panel Praises Imam Rauf and Wife as Moderates; Questions Opponents of Ground Zero Mosque

Tuesday's “Morning Joe” featured guest Daisy Khan, wife of Imam Rauf who tried to establish a mosque two blocks away from the site of the 9/11 terror attacks. The panel praised Khan and her husband as peace-making moderates, and arrogantly questioned why more Americans couldn't accept the mosque at Ground Zero. “America is the beacon of the world,” co-host Mika Brzezinski said echoing Khan's earlier words affirming American freedom. “And yet, we had such a controversy about the community center that you and your husband were trying to start blocks away from Ground Zero,” she added, questioning the American “understanding” of the center. “One of the most depressing things to me was the fact that in 2010, Americans seemed to be less accepting of Muslim Americans than they were even in the months after 9/11,” co-host Joe Scarborough lamented from his soapbox. “Why do you think we Americans had such a reaction – again, in New York, a place that's supposed to be the most open-minded and pluralistic?” he asked guest Lesley Jane Seymour, editor-in-chief of More magazine.

Chris Matthews Rips Obama’s Handling of Egypt Crisis: ‘I Feel Ashamed As an American’

MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews appeared on Morning Joe, Friday, to slam President Obama's handling of the escalating crisis in Egypt, saying it made him ” ashamed as an American .” Matthews, who famously declared Obama gave him a “thrill” up his leg, excoriated what he perceived to be the President's disloyalty to Egypt's leader, Hosni Mubarak. The Hardball host berated, ” And Barack Obama, as much I support him in many ways, there is a transitional quality to the guy that is chilling.” He added, “I believe in relationships…You treat your friends a certain way. You're loyal to them.” Matthews has previously lauded the authoritarian Mubarak.. Pointing out Mubarak's stand against Hezbollah and other extremist elements in the region, the anchor on January 31 wondered, “How can you say he'll easily be replaced? This guy's the George Washington of peace over there.” [See video below.] Deriding immediate calls for Mubarak to step down, Matthews lamented, “Character and planning…I feel shame about this. I feel ashamed as an American, the way we're doing this. I know he has to change. I know we're for democracy, but the way we've handled it is not the way a friend handles a matter.” Matthews even attacked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's performance: “I watched Secretary Clinton today. I don't get anything. I don't see anything other than two and two are four. I keep waiting for five. Show me you've done your jobs over there.” A transcript of his answer to Joe Scarborough's question, which aired at 8:22am EST, follows: JOE SCARBOROUGH: Chris, a statement yesterday from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, real concern among Arab states, if this is how we treat our ally of 30 years and I know it's tough to bring these facts up to people who want to call for his immediate lynching, but if we treat an ally of 30 years this way, demanding that he leaves quote “now,” Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, are other allies in the region start questioning America's character [sic]? CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, I think that's the great word, Joe. It's character. Our national character. We do is have a character. And Americans think about ourselves as the good guys and being good friends and loyal. And these are values that mean a lot to us as people. You don't walk down the street and watch your friend get gunned down and not do anything about it. We're not Kitty Genovese here. We're not a situation in New York or something when somebody gets mugged and we watch it happen. Was he our friend for 30 years? Are we denying that? I remember, Joe, when he came to one of those afternoon events they had in the House Foreign Affairs committee back in 1981 after Sadat had been assassinated. And, of course, we Americans loved Sadat. There was a great emotion towards him because of what he had done for peace and his courage. And we just loved his dignity and his personality. And Along came Mubarak, this strong personality. We thought things might come apart over there and he held everything together. He was strong. I was with Tip O'Neil that day and I walked aback from that meeting with him and I said, “He's a strong guy.” And we were just chatting about what an impressive figure he was and we've been with him for 30 years. And now we're saying, it's time for the gate. Well, we should have known this. My second point of view about this, it's friendship. He's 83 in May. He's getting old. We should have prepared this 10, 20 years ago. In friendship, where was the State Department? Don't we have hundreds of people sitting over there in Foggy Bottom with no other job except to know what's going on in Egypt, with no other job, but to know the culture and politics in that country and to understand who the potential leaders and factions that might off set the Muslim Brotherhood? What are they doing? I watched Secretary Clinton today . I don't get anything. I don't see anything other than two and two are four . I keep waiting for five. Show me you've done your jobs over there . And I just wish, in our friendship, we should have been smart and I think we don't have a plan B. I mean, the guy's almost 83. His plan was Gamal]. I was talking to Secretary Powell while ago. I hope it wasn't off the record, because he said it rather clearly to me. I said, “What do you think of Mubarak?” He said, “He's like every other leader in the world there. All they think about is primogeniture.” They want their oldest kid to be their successor, whether it's Gadaffi or Bashar Assad. They call themselves Baathist, monarchist, whatever, Islamists. It all comes down to the same thing. They want their oldest kid to replace them. And what was the plan for transition for our friend? Did we ever talk to him about it? Did we talk about it, encourage him? That's my view. Character and planning. And I don't see- I feel shame about this. I feel ashamed as an American, the way we're doing this. I know he has to change. I know we're for democracy, but the way we've handled it is not the way a friend handles a matter. We're not handling as Americans should handle a matter like this. I don't feel right about it. And Barack Obama, as much I support him in many ways, there is a transitional quality to the guy that is chilling. I believe in relationships. I think we all do. Relationship politics is what we were brought up with in this country. You treat your friends a certain way. You're loyal to them. And when they're wrong, you try to be with them. You try and stick with them. As the great old line was, “I don't need you when I'm right.” You've got to help out people when they're in trouble and all I'm seeing is transaction. Who we going to get the next deal with? And, by the way, we don't have a plan for the next deal, so we're not even good at transactions, let alone relationships. What are we good at here? That's what I keep asking. What have we done as leaders and friends? Nothing except watch. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Wow! — Scott Whitlock is a news analyst for the Media Research Center. Scarborough Again Hits the Right (But Ignores the Left) In Newest Politico Column

Carrying his sermonizing from his MSNBC morning show to Politico, Joe Scarborough railed against inflammatory political rhetoric in his latest Politico column – but hit conservative talk while ignoring leftist vitriol. Calling them out by name, as he did recently on his show “Morning Joe,” Scarborough pleaded with conservatives that if they can't be civil out of righteousness, they could at least practice civility for the sake of the Republican Party. “It's time to grow up,” he lectured the Right, specifically pundits Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Of course, Scarborough made no criticism whatsoever of inflammatory rhetoric from the Left – such as his MSNBC colleague Ed Schultz, who in 2009 joked about ripping Dick Cheney's heart out and playing political football with it, nor from vicious left-wing dilettante Randi Rhodes , nor from Democrat Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida who called his 2010 Republican opponent ” Taliban Dan .”

Networks Tout Democratic Sheriff’s Warnings That ‘Climate of Political Vitriol’ Created Shooting

ABC, NBC and MSNBC on Monday all eagerly hyped the complaints by an Arizona sheriff that the “anger and bigotry” of everyday Americans contributed to Saturday's shooting. None of the journalists interviewing Clarence Dupnik identified as an elected Democratic official. (ABC's Jake Tapper did in a separate piece.) Former Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe and lauded Dupnik: ” I think in part a lot of public officials are timid. The Pima County Sheriff is not. He is speaking out, and too few others have because they're worried about retribution .” Brokaw, directly making a connection, added, “And that's something that those of us on this side of the camera also have to be thinking about and not just be feeding that. Look, Sarah Palin with “Don't Retreat; Reload,” and the crosshairs on the map.” read more

‘Morning Joe’: GOP House Vote to Repeal ObamaCare Is a Waste of Time

Monday's “Morning Joe” panel on MSNBC mocked the House Republicans' plan to vote to repeal President Obama's health care legislation in full. “Waste of time” and “meaningless legislative exercise” were some of the phrases used to describe the first announced GOP priority. “It's going to take them fifteen minutes, they're going to vote to repeal it, and the Senate's not going to do it,” explained co-host Joe Scarborough. “It is a meaningless legislative exercise, but you know what? The base will like it.” “Republicans in Washington are planning to waste some time. Is anyone surprised by that?” co-host Mika Brzezinski tersely introduced the segment in the 7 a.m. EDT news hour. Both Scarborough and Brzezinski sarcastically mocked the plan. “Good for them. Thank you,” Brzezinski spat. “You are big men,” she derided the House Republicans. “You so tough,” Scarborough chimed in, followed by Brzezinski making strange growling noises.

MSNBC's “Morning Joe” panel hit the Republican congressional leadership Wednesday for not admitting its faults in dealing with the President the past two years. After playing a video clip of leading House Republicans Eric Cantor and John Boehner praising President Obama for his admission of not having reached out enough to the GOP, “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough challenged the GOP to do the same. “And now the polite thing to do…is to say 'And you know what? We could have reached out more, too',” ex-Republican congressman Scarborough said of the congressional GOP. “That would have cost them nothing,” he preached. Co-host Mika Brzezinski complained that the GOP focused on the negative, and scolded them for speaking out like they did. “I just heard them emphasizing anything that the President might have given a little to put out an olive branch,” she griped, “and then they focus on the negative.”

Joe Scarborough apparently likes Nancy Pelosi's toughness, given her response to his MSNBC colleague pressing her as to why she would make a good House Minority Leader after losing 60 seats. MSNBC's Luke Russert asked the Speaker why she should lead the House Democrats if her approval rating among independents is at 8 percent. Pelosi delivered a testy response, and Scarborough admitted his glee over the tone. “I think she's a disaster for the Democrats politically right now…but I like that fight,” he remarked. “C'mon, boom!” he expressed as he threw imaginary punches, pretending to be Pelosi punching down Russert. “Hey Luke, come here, Luke, look, boom! Luke, look, look, boom!” Later on Thursday's “Morning Joe,” Scarborough was pressed by Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin as to why he was praising such a polarizing figure when he has promoted a platform of bipartisanship and moderate politics. The “Morning Joe” co-host has conducted multiple campaigns on his own show for calmer rhetoric in the country's political sphere and has denounced political extremism.
