Click here to view this media Rachel Maddow laid out very well in her opening segment how this struggle going on now in Wisconsin and other states is not about whether the state of Wisconsin has a financial crisis. It doesn’t. This is about busting the largest organization that organizes, gets out the vote and raises money for the Democratic Party, the public sector unions. And as Rachel noted and TPM reported — Wisconsin Gov. Walker Ginned Up Budget Shortfall To Undercut Worker Rights : Wisconsin’s new Republican governor has framed his assault on public worker’s collective bargaining rights as a needed measure of fiscal austerity during tough times. The reality is radically different. Unlike true austerity measures — service rollbacks, furloughs, and other temporary measures that cause pain but save money — rolling back worker’s bargaining rights by itself saves almost nothing on its own. But Walker’s doing it anyhow, to knock down a barrier and allow him to cut state employee benefits immediately. Furthermore, this broadside comes less than a month after the state’s fiscal bureau — the Wisconsin equivalent of the Congressional Budget Office — concluded that Wisconsin isn’t even in need of austerity measures, and could conclude the fiscal year with a surplus. In fact, they say that the current budget shortfall is a direct result of tax cut policies Walker enacted in his first days in office. “Walker was not forced into a budget repair bill by circumstances beyond he control,” says Jack Norman, research director at the Institute for Wisconsin Future — a public interest think tank. “He wanted a budget repair bill and forced it by pushing through tax cuts… so he could rush through these other changes.” “The state of Wisconsin has not reached the point at which austerity measures are needed,” Norman adds. More details there, so go read the rest.

The key question is how the army will react to today’s protests – and whether they mark the moment when the goals of the demonstrators and those of the army begin to part company. This morning the Muslim Brotherhood, the formerly banned Islamist group, urged Egyptians to protect the revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak from those who wanted to “kidnap it and its accomplishments”. Mohamed Badie, the leader of the group, which this week said it would form a political party, sought to reassure Egyptians about his organisation’s influence. He said the Brotherhood would not seek the presidency or a parliamentary majority in free and fair elections promised by the military council ruling the country. “[The Brotherhood] has no appetite for the presidency, or a majority or temporal positions,” he said. 8.39am: Good morning. Governments around the Middle East are bracing themselves for protests and violence today as the unrest in the region continues to spread. Bahrain In Bahrain this morning many thousands of mourners called for the downfall of the monarchy as they began burying the dead after an assault on protesters at Manama’s Pearl roundabout on Thursday night which left five dead. Today’s calls for the king to go were seen as an escalation of demonstrators’ demands; the uprising began with calls for a weakening of the Sunni monarchy’s hold on top government posts and measures to address discrimination against the Shia majority. Two funerals have taken place, with one more to go this morning – after which protesters plan to march to Pearl roundabout, something that may cause a confrontation with police and security forces. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/feb/18/bahrain-mourners-call-downnfall-monarchy Libya In Libya, soldiers were deployed on to the streets of Benghazi, after thousands took to the streets overnight to protest about security forces killing an estimated 24 demonstrators. The city was quiet this morning, but a witness reported shooting last night and the BBC said 10 people had been killed. Funerals are expected today that could act as a catalyst for further protests. Pro-government supporters were also out on the streets this morning. Crucially, there was little sign of anti-government protest in Tripoli, the capital. Ian Black has more on yesterday’s protests here. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/feb/17/libya-day-of-rage-unrest Egypt Thousands of Egyptians gathered for prayers this morning and a planned victory march through Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the site of the protests that led to the fall of the president, Hosni Mubarak, a week ago today. The demonstrations will also act as a warning to the army – which took power after Mubarak stepped down – that protesters want to take a more active role in the country’s transition to democracy. Yemen New protests are also expected today in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital. Yesterday saw a sixth day of clashes between pro-democracy protesters and government loyalists in the country. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/gallery/2011/feb/17/yemen-protests-in-pictures Iraq About 1,000 protesters in Basra, the southern Iraqi city, are demonstrating to demand better services from the government, jobs and improved pensions. They warned that today’s protest would be peaceful, but others in the future might not be. At least five people have been killed at protests throughout the country this week. Why does this not surprise me in the least? After all, why would we possibly need public broadcasting when we have such stellar, unbiased sources as Fox News? Who would be there to tell us how the Muslims are going to impose Sharia Law on us (without explaining exactly what that is), or inflict Glenn Beck on the planet daily? James Fallows wrote a terrific column on why NPR matters and should matter to everyone. After extolling Fox News’ excellence (hey, he said it, not me) at what they do, he says this: “News” in the normal sense is a means for Fox’s personalities, not an end in itself. It provides occasions for the ongoing development of its political narrative — the war on American values, the out-of-touchness of Democrats — much as current events give preachers material for sermons. This is why Fox’s emphasis goes to its star interpreters — Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, the “Fox and Friends” crew — more than to expanding bureaus around the country or the world, investing in scientific, economic, or international expertise, or generally trying harder to place primary observers wherever it can.** Isn’t NPR just the same thing, from an different political perspective? No, and the difference matters. NPR, whatever its failings, is one of the few current inheritors of the tradition of the ambitious, first-rate news organization . When people talk about the “decline of the press,” in practice they mean that fewer and fewer newspapers, news magazine, and broadcast networks can afford to try to gather information. The LA Times, the Washington Post, CBS News — they once had people stationed all around the world. Now they work mainly from headquarters — last year the Post closed all its domestic bureaus outside Washington — and let’s not even think about poor Newsweek and US News. Ahem. NPR is reporting on the protests in Wisconsin . Fox News isn’t. NPR reported on Egypt long before any “mainstream” news source did. But they think it should be privatized? Bill Moyers recently spoke on the importance of facts , and how they still matter even in this age of infopinion. Indeed, they do. Much of his speech was directed at Fox News, and how they distort those same facts. … So many people inhabit a closed belief system on whose door they have hung the “Do Not Disturb” sign, that they pick and choose only those facts that will serve as building blocks for walling them off from uncomfortable truths. Any journalist whose reporting threatens that belief system gets sliced and diced by its apologists and polemicists (say, the fabulists at Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and the yahoos of talk radio.) …No wonder many people still believe Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii, as his birth certificate shows; or that he is a Muslim, when in fact he is a Christian; or that he is a socialist when day by day he shows an eager solicitude for corporate capitalism. Partisans in particular – and the audiences for Murdoch’s Fox News and talk radio – are particularly susceptible to such scurrilous disinformation. In a Harris survey last spring, 67 percent of Republicans said Obama is a socialist; 57 percent believed him to be a Muslim; 45 percent refused to believe he was born in America; and 24 percent said he “may be the antichrist.” In the Fox News segment above, funding for public broadcasting is laughed at as “welfare for broadcasters”, which makes no sense at all. Johnson just about burst a blood vessel over “Antiques Roadshow” and “Masterpiece Theater” , claiming they are useless shows that could just as easily be funded by private enterprise as the government. In the process, he suggested that those two shows are representative of all the broadcasting PBS does. Then they go one step further, suggesting that because government funds go to public broadcasting, the government controls the content. Leaving no child behind or stone unturned, they also attack the contention that de-funding PBS would harm children. Speaking as a parent whose kids grew up with Sesame Street and other PBS children’s programming, I couldn’t agree more. It will leave kids with the sugary crap that has no substance on networks. The same networks that make Justin Bieber a star and obsess on every move Brittany Spears makes. So yeah, it’ll hurt children. But listen to what they’re really saying when they shout “privatize public broadcasting!” They’re saying we should not have access to information unless it’s served through the filters of ideologues and corporations, a claim worthy of Orwell. Moyers: George Orwell had warned six decades ago that the corrosion of language goes hand in hand with the corruption of democracy. If he were around today, he would remind us that “like the rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket,” this kind of propaganda engenders a “protective stupidity” almost impossible for facts to penetrate.

Rachel Maddow and Ed Schultz really have both done a great job of covering the protest in Wisconsin. And unlike their cohorts over at Fox News, they’re covering it from the workers’ and labor’s perspective instead of attacking the unions. Rachel also talked to former Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold about his new organization, Progressives United. Amanda Terkel at the HuffPo has more on that. Russ Feingold Launches ‘Progressives United’ To Combat Corporate Influences In Politics : When some senators retire, they decide to take lucrative lobbying jobs . Others go straight to Wall Street . But Wisconsin Democrat Russ Feingold, who lost his re-election bid in November, is continuing on his principled — and often lonely — path by starting an organization to combat corporate influence in politics, an effort he hopes will spark “a new progressive movement” that will truly hold elected officials accountable. Launching on Wednesday, Progressives United is an attempt to to build a grassroots effort aimed at mitigating the effects of, and eventually overturning, the Supreme Court’s infamous Citizens United decision that opened the floodgates to corporate spending in the U.S. electoral system. In addition to online mobilization, the political action committee (PAC) will support progressive candidates at the local, state and national levels, as well as holding the media and elected officials accountable on the group’s key priorities. “In my view — and the view of many people — it’s one of the most lawless decisions in the history of our country,” said Feingold of Citizens United in an interview with The Huffington Post. “The idea of allowing corporations to have unlimited influence on our democracy is very dangerous, obviously. That’s exactly what it does … Things were like this 100 years ago in the United States, with the huge corporate and business power of the oil companies and others. But this time it’s like the Gilded Age on steroids.” Go read the rest and here’s Feingold talking to Rachel Maddow about empowering U.S. workers and his new organization. Continue reading …Click here to view this media We’re already accustomed to Bill O’Reilly’s standard MO when it comes to polls: If it makes Democrats and/or President Obama look bad, he shouts it to the skies. If it makes Republicans look bad, he simply doesn’t believe it and declares the poll methodologically faulty. And so it was no surprise when, given the recent polling demonstrating that a majority of Republican primary voters are suckers for the Birther conspiracy theories, O’Reilly last night flatly declared the polls wrong: O’REILLY: And in the “Impact” segment tonight, new poll by a Democratic organization says 51 percent of Republican primary voters believe President Obama was not born in the USA. I do not believe that poll. And here’s the reason. The sample is so minuscule, very few people vote in Republican primaries. And to isolate them would be a challenge even for Gallup, much less a political polling center. So, here is a better poll. According to CBS news, 58 percent of Americans believe the President was born in America, just 20 percent say he was born in another country. The rest don’t seem to care. There is no question that some Democrats are trying to marginalize Republican opposition in 2012 by painting them as nuts, thus the birther polling. Right — because a a poll surveying all Americans is going to be just like a poll surveying Republican primary voters, eh? Er, not exactly. Indeed, O’Reilly just unintentionally highlighted the stark differences between your average Tea Partying-Obama-hating-liberal-smacking Republican voter and the average sane, normal, decent American. And then he brought on Karl Rove, who then declared that this whole Birther conspiracy theory was concocted by the Obama White House as a way to ensnare poor unwitting wingnuts in the “trap” of John Birth Society-esque conspiracy theories. No, really, that’s what he said: O’REILLY: OK, so, there is no doubt in my mind after watching Gregory on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, grilling Speaker Boehner about the birth certificate and all of that that the liberal and Gregory is a liberal man, right? I’m not being unfair to him, am I? KARL ROVE: No. O’REILLY: OK. He may not acknowledge it but he is. So, it’s divide — let’s divide the Republican Party. ROVE: This is a White House strategy. They love this. O’REILLY: How do you know it’s the White House strategy? ROVE: Look, the President could come out and say, ‘Here are the documents.’ They are happy to have this controversy continue because every moment the conservatives talk about this they marginalize themselves and diminish themselves in the minds of independent voters. And every moment we spend talking about this controversy is a moment we can’t spend talking about the failed stimulus bill, the reckless spending, Obamacare, his failures in foreign policy and his failure to live up to the promises that he made in the 2008 election. Look, he was born in Hawaii. If he was born in Kenya, then there must have been some massive conspiracy that said this guy being born in Kenya — O’REILLY: The Factor already did the investigation and we — (CROSSTALK) ROVE: You know, birth notices in both Honolulu newspapers. Got that? Even though the White House has produced a real birth certificate, the kind every person born in Hawaii uses to prove their citizenship, Rove thinks that somehow the “complete” certificate on file somewhere in Hawaii will change the Birthers’ minds and convince them Obama was born in the USA. Right. And that furthermore, the refusal to produce said certificate is actually a plot by the White House to make Republicans look like wacky conspiracy theorists of the John Birch Society mold: O’REILLY: Ok. Now, there is though and you saw it at CPAC last week in Washington, D.C. — there is an element of the Republican Party that’s far right and that really loves this kind of discourse. ROVE: The campaign for liberty types who are there for Ron Paul. O’REILLY: Right. They love Ron Paul. They love Christine O’Donnell. They love that kind of stuff. ROVE: Let’s be clear about it. There is a healthy dose, an unhealthy amount of people in the — in that movement who are 9/11 deniers. I keep running into them. They protest me. Ron Paul — big Ron Paul stickers and so forth. They are birthers. Look, we had people stand up and boo Dick Cheney and — O’REILLY: They called him a war criminal. ROVE: And because again, you have a very thin fringe. O’REILLY: But how big is that? ROVE: It’s not big at all. Remember, Ron Paul who had a lot of very — you know, sort of mainstream issues regarding, say, the Federal Reserve and hard money. O’REILLY: Put a percentage of — ROVE: It’s a fraction — tiny, insignificant. O’REILLY: So this poll it says 51 percent of — I know this poll is flawed. ROVE: This poll is flawed. But I do say this; Republicans had better be clear about this. This we had a problem in the 1950′s with the John Birch Society and it took Bill Buckley standing up as a strong conservative and taking them on. And within our party we have to be very careful about allowing these people who are the birthers and the 9/11 deniers to get too high a profile and say too much without setting the record straight. O’REILLY: But what percentage of Republican voters — five percent; 10 percent? ROVE: I don’t know. But whatever it is, it ought to be less because we need the leaders of our party to say look, stop falling into the trap of the White House. Focus on the real issues. Actually, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this theory on The O’Reilly Factor . And as we observed back then: Now, if Goldberg and O’Reilly are so concerned that the public might conclude that mainstream conservatives are prone to far-right conspiracy theories and various other forms of wingnuttery, they might look in the mirror. It’s the virtual definition of wingnuttery to even be asking why Obama won’t release his birth certificate when he has in fact done so. There’s no Obama conspiracy keeping this garbage alive and tying it around the necks of mainstream conservatives. They’re doing a very fine job of that themselves. And in the case of Karl Rove, you simply can’t defend John Boehner’s manifest failure of leadership in refusing to denounce the Birthers and then turn around in the same breath and declare that Republican need to separate themselves from their nutty Bircher faction. Fact is, these guys are caught, as they have been for awhile, in the toxic embrace of their increasingly extremist base, embodied by a Tea Party movement in which Birtherism is a supermajority belief. What Rove won’t admit (and Boehner’s abject failure to lead on the issue implicitly concedes) is that Republicans would never win any elections without that same nutty element that has always helped elect them — but which they want to write off as the product of an evil Obama plot. Like that’s going to help them deal with it. Full transcript here.
