Hillary Clinton Removed From Situation Room Photo By Der Tzitung, Hasidic Newspaper (PHOTOS)

A Brooklyn-based Hasidic newspaper removed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and another woman from the now-iconic photo of the Obama national security team watching the raid that killed Osama bin Laden from the White House Situation Room. The original photo, taken as the raid was occurring, famously shows Clinton in the center of the room, with her hand over her mouth. But the newspaper Der Tzitung, described by the Jewish Week as “ultra-Orthodox,” has a policy of never printing photos of women in its pages because it thinks they could be sexually suggestive. Thus, Clinton and counterterrorism director Audrey Tomason, who was seen standing at the back of the room, were removed from the picture. The blogger Failed Messiah was the first to notice the Photoshopping. See the Photoshopped version: See the original:

U.S. Wants Access To Osama Bin Laden’s Wives Being Held By Pakistan

ISLAMABAD — The United States wants access to three widows of Osama bin Laden being held by Pakistani authorities, something that could help answer questions about whether any officials knew the al-Qaida chief was living in the country, a top American official said. Pakistan authorities were not immediately available for comment Sunday on the demand, which could be a fresh sticking point between the two countries. U.S.-Pakistani relations were frayed before the unilateral U.S. raid, and appear to have worsened since. Information from the three women left behind in the house after American commandos killed bin Laden could also reveal the day-to-day life of bin Laden, what he has done since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and the workings of al-Qaida. Several children were also taken into custody, some or all of them believed to be bin Laden’s. The al-Qaida chief was found in a large house close to a military academy in the army town of Abbottabad, where he had been living for up to six years. His location raised suspicions that some Pakistani authorities, possibly elements of the powerful army and intelligence services, could have been colluding with him. U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Washington had seen no evidence that the government was colluding with bin Laden. But he said that Pakistani authorities “need to provide us with intelligence, by the way, from the compound that they’ve gathered, including access to Osama bin Laden’s three wives.” Donilon also said Pakistani authorities had collected other evidence from the house which the United States wanted to “work with them on assessing.” The commandos seized a large and valuable intelligence haul that included videos, telephone numbers and documents, according to U.S. officials. The Pakistani government has strongly denied it knew of bin Laden’s whereabouts, but Western governments have long regarded Islamabad with suspicion. Its armed forces have historical – some would say ongoing – links with Islamist militants, whom they used as proxies in Afghanistan and India. The American commandos killed bin Laden and up to four other people, including one of his sons, at the compound on April 29. They took the body of bin Laden and quickly buried it at sea. At least three women, identified by Pakistan and U.S. officials as bin Laden’s wives, and several children were left behind at the compound. Pakistani officials have given little information, some of it conflicting, about the identities of the women and children, their numbers and what they allegedly have been saying. Late Sunday, two loud blasts were heard in Abbottabad, but the source of the explosions was not immediately clear. The compound where bin Laden was found appeared undamaged.

Osama Bin Laden Home Videos Released

LOLITA C. BALDOR and KIMBERLY DOZIER, Associated Press WASHINGTON — Newly released videos show Osama bin Laden watching himself on television and rehearsing for terrorist videos, revealing that even from the walled confines of his Pakistani hideout, he remained a media maestro who was eager to craft his own image for the cameras. The videos, released by U.S. intelligence officials Saturday, were offered as further proof that Navy SEALs killed the world’s most wanted terrorist this week. But they also served to show bin Laden as vain, someone obsessed with his portrayal by the world’s media. One of the movies shows bin Laden, his unkempt beard streaked in gray, sitting on the floor, wrapped in a brown blanket and holding a remote control. He flipped back and forth between what appears to be live news coverage of himself. The old, small television was perched on top of a desk with a large tangle of electrical wires running to a nearby control box. In another, he has apparently dyed and neatly trimmed his beard for the filming of a propaganda video. The video, which the U.S. released without sound, was titled “”Message to the American People” and was believed to be filed sometime last fall, a senior intelligence official said during a briefing for reporters, on condition that his name not be used. The videos were seized from bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Officials said the clips shown to reporters were just part of the largest collection of senior terrorist materials ever collected. The evidence seized during the raid also includes phone numbers and documents that officials hope will help break the back of the organization behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Intelligence officials have known that bin Laden and al-Qaida monitored the news. But for years, when it was assumed that he was living in Pakistan’s rugged, mountainous tribal region, some believed he might not be able to get real-time news. After the CIA discovered bin Laden’s suburban compound, they realized that a satellite dish provided a television feed to bin Laden’s compound. The video also reveals that bin Laden had a computer in his home, though officials say there were no Internet or phone lines running from the house. Bin Laden and four others were killed in a daring pre-dawn raid Monday after U.S. helicopters lowered a team of SEALs behind the compound’s high walls. The terrorist leader’s death leaves al-Qaida with an uncertain future and represents America’s most successful counterterrorism mission.

Protest planned over disability cuts

Protest organised by hundreds of disabled people’s groups to culminate with lobby of MPs Thousands of disabled people and their families and supporters will converge on Westminster this week to protest against government cuts and their impact on key benefits such as the disability living allowance and the employment and support allowance . Afterwards they will lobby MPs as the welfare reform bill reaches a critical stage in the House of Commons. Wednesday’s protest, dubbed the Hardest Hit march, is being coordinated by hundreds of disabled people’s organisations and charities and groups including Scope , Leonard Cheshire Disability , Mencap , the RNIB and Sense . Organisers say that disabled people will be hit disproportionately hard by the cuts, which, they estimate, could result in families losing £9bn of support over the next four years. Jaspal Dhani, chief executive of the United Kingdom Disabled People’s Council , said the cuts would have an adverse effect on disabled people’s rights and their ability to live independently. “We believe that disabled people stand to lose most from these cuts,” he said. “We hope to show both the government and the community at large just how fearful disabled people are about the impact the cuts will have. It’s about taking direct action because it seems government ministers are simply not listening.” Dhani said the cuts would result in disabled people being institutionalised and treated unfairly as local authorities try to save money by cutting funding to the bodies that support them. Rebecca Rennison, co-chair of the Disability Benefits Consortium ‘s policy group, agreed that disabled people were likely to feel the cuts far more keenly than the rest of the population. “They’re experiencing the same cuts as everyone else and then experiencing additional ones, so it’s cuts on top of cuts,” she said. “The disability living allowance (DLA) is vital to people’s independence. They are taking away the mobility component that pays for things like taxis and allows people to get out of their homes. The impact will be devastating and people are saying enough’s enough. That’s why people from all over the country are coming to London to make their views known.” The rally will begin on Victoria Embankment on Wednesday morning and move to Westminster. Protesters will then lobby MPs in Westminster Hall and Methodist Central Hall. between 13.30 and 17.30. Disability Welfare London Karen McVeigh Sam Jones guardian.co.uk

Cavuto and His Panel Accuse Democrats of Using Scare Tactics to Frighten Seniors on Medicare Cuts in Ryan’s Budget

Click here to view this media Fox’s Neil Cavuto and his weekend show panel were terribly upset that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that seniors may die sooner under Rep. Paul Ryan and the GOP’s budget plan during testimony before the House Education and the Workforce Committee this week. Apparently their vote for Ryan’s budget has got a lot of Republicans on edge and as Steve Benen noted , some of them are using the same talking points as the Fox pundits did here. When Rep. Chris Lee (R) resigned in disgrace in February, few expected his seat to change party hands. His Buffalo-area district has been represented by Republicans for a long while, and national Democrats didn’t expect the special election to replace Lee to be competitive at all. In March, the New York GOP rallied behind Jane Corwin, a well-liked state assemblywoman, and the race in the 26th congressional district appeared to be largely over. And then a Siena College poll was published, showing Corwin’s lead at just five points over Democrat Kathy Hochul. What happened? Part of the competitiveness is the result of Jack Davis, an odd millionaire, running as an independent and splitting the right. And the other part is Paul Ryan’s House Republican budget plan. At this point, the best the Republican campaign can come up with is the charge that Democrats “are trying to scare seniors.” But that’s awfully weak — it’s not demagoguery if it’s true , and if accurate descriptions of the GOP plan end up scaring people, that’s certainly not Democrats’ fault. During this segment on Cavuto’s show they were a bit long on fearmongering themselves and short on just what the details of Ryan’s plan are , even though all of them continually maintained that the people attacking it don’t know what’s in it and need to go read it. And Steve is exactly right on the “scare tactic” talking point; that’s a terribly weak argument. Seniors are afraid and upset because once they get a look at the GOP’s budget plan and the details, they don’t like it , not because they don’t realize fully what it means for Medicare – privatizing it. Of course the panel here just repeated the tired talking point that Medicare needs to be and handed over to the private insurance industry in order to “save it.”
