Italy’s Nationwide Plastic Bag Ban Begins (Video)

Image: Guardian Plastic bag bans have been picking up momentum internationally for some time now, and 2011 kicks off with the instating of another big one: Starting yesterday, single-use non-biodegradable plastic bags will be outlawed in Italy . And while plenty of questions remain about the ban’s rules and efficacy, it’s a considerable leap, seeing as how Italy uses 25% of all the plastic bags in Europe — around 25 billion a year. This NBC video repor… Read the full story on TreeHugger

In California, Governor Brown Redux

SACRAMENTO — Jerry Brown began his return engagement as governor of California on Monday, using his inaugural address to call for an end to partisan battling that he said was paralyzing the state and to promise, in what is presumably the last chapter of his public life, to lead California out of one of the toughest budget crises of its history. “Choices have to be made, and difficult decisions,” Mr. Brown declared to an audience that included two former governors and hundreds of state legislators. “At this stage of my life, I did not come here to embrace delay and denial.” At times jocular, at times earnest, Mr. Brown noted — indeed celebrated — his…

Kinect hack turns you into a punching, waving MIDI controller (video)

If you’re looking for an awesome, impractical way to make music with your computer (and who isn’t?) please direct your attention to the following Kinect hack. Shinect, the brainchild of a YouTube user named Shinyless, uses motion detection to turn you into a MIDI controller! The current implementation gives the operator two virtual pads that can be activated by the old Jersey Shore fist pump — and if that ain’t enough, the sounds can be pitchshifted by raising / lowering the other arm. Pretty sweet, huh? This thing uses OpenNI , and while he’s demonstrating it using FruityLoops it should work with any MIDI device. Things are pretty rough’n ready at the moment, although he promises big things in the future. In the meantime, check out the proof-of-concept in the video after the break. Happy New Year!! This week I will be shooting a commercial project in Seoul, South Korea. However, I will also have a little time to run the streets. So… any recommendations? Cool neighborhoods, shops, specific streets, cafes, events, etc? In the past the input from my audience has been incredibly helpful to me. Right after Seoul I will be heading to Florence for Pitti Uomo and then on to Milan and Paris for the men’s collections. I’ll return to Seoul after Paris, so if I missed anything I’ll have a second chance. I had a great holiday but I’m really ready to get back to work.

LincVolt dies in a fire, is being rebuilt (video)

Warm up those phoenix references, because this LincVolt story is a perfect candidate. We’ve been following Neil Young’s crazy retro next-gen conveyance since its inception in 2008 , and sadly the news of late has not been good. Just a few weeks after the car (and its proprietor) made an appearance at SEMA it (the car) was left unattended while charging in a warehouse. The pearly white land yacht caught fire and nearly burned the place down, but enough was able to be salvaged for the team to start a rebuild, largely thanks to not one but two donor 1958 and ’59 Lincoln Continentals that will be providing the necessary panels and parts to replace those destroyed in the fire. You can see the pre-fire car and some highlights from SEMA in the video below, though you’ll have to wait until summer to see it looking that good again. We will not go down, for the Gaza tonight

By Kourosh Ziabari – On the eve of New Gregorian Year, the international community commemorates the second anniversary of Israel’s deadly offensive in the Gaza Strip in the wake of the continuous blockade of the coastal sliver which has paralyzed the lives of more than 1.5 million impoverished Palestinians living there. Two years ago and during the final days of 2008, Israel launched an all-out military attack on the Gaza Strip which, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, claimed the lives of 1,417 Palestinians, the majority of whom were innocent women and children. The military assault of the Israel Defense Forces also wounded 5,303 Palestinians, destroyed more than half of…

Skunk Juice earbuds and their magnetic connectors might just save your ear drums (video)

You know when you’re rocking out, earbuds nestled in your canals just so , and then the cord catches on something and it feels like your brain is getting sucked out through your ear holes? That very situation could be avoided if only you were wearing Skunk Juice earbuds. They feature a magnetic ZZYZX SnapJack connectors, not unlike those found in Belkin’s BreakFree guitar cable , providing a failure point somewhere south of your fragile head internals. Additionally, you can pop your magnetic terminator onto the end of any other pair of Skunk Juice ‘buds and listen in on what the other person is grooving out to, a situation charmingly demonstrated in the video below. We’re a little doubtful that these will ever be common enough for that particular halcyon vision of the future to come to pass, but right here in the present we’re quite sure that’s a strong contender for worst product name of the year — already.
