Best Buy and Toshiba have always shared special kind of love with their Blue Label laptops , and now both are continuing that partnership to bring you the next one of those systems — the Satellite E305. Like the previous E205 version , the system packs all the latest technology from Intel, including a new Sandy Bridge Core i5 processor and WiDi 2.0 , which as you may know by now supports full 1080p video. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, Tosh has equipped the system with a hybrid hard drive system — it pairs a 5GB flash drive for the OS and a 7200RPM hard drive. It also has a USB 3.0 port and Blu-ray drive. It pretty much has everything you’ve ever wanted except say for discrete graphics, but has drastically revamped the 5-pound rig with a alumnium finish, backlit keyboard, and new ClickPad. It’s all great news until you realize that it won’t actually hit those Best Buy shelves until the Spring. Sadly no word on pricing either, but hit the break for some nice hands-on shots. Continue reading …Who says you need a vat of liquid nitrogen and a voided warranty to push your gaming rig to 5GHz? Here at CES, Origin PC has just announced one killer upgrade for its Genesis and Big O desktop range: an overclocked Core i7 2600k processor that’s pushed to 5GHz from the factory. Naturally, the release coincides with Intel’s new Sandy Bridge rollout, with this particular chip touting Turbo Boost 2.0 and an integrated memory controller. You’ll also get three-way SLI, a customized liquid cooling setup (phew!) and a refreshed EFI BIOS from ASUS that features “convenient mouse controls and an entirely new user interface.” If you’re looking for something a wee bit more portable (but not exact bantam), you’ll be thrilled to know that its Eon 15 and 17 gaming laptops will also start shipping soon with Intel’s second-generation Core i5 / i7 CPUs; pair that with a GeForce GTX 485M, an optional TV tuner and four slots of DDR3 memory, and you’ll have yourself a sufficient little LAN party rig. There’s no mention of dollars and cents, but we’re confident the build sheets will be updated soon on Origin’s order pages. Continue reading …Oh yes, that up there is Samsung’s new 13.3-inch 9 Series laptop, and yes, it’s said to be the “thinnest and lightest 13-inch notebook available.” Revealed ahead of Samsung’s CES presser, the duralumin machine weighs just 2.89 pounds and measures .68 inches thick — in comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air measures 0.11 to 0.68 inches thick and weighs 2.9 pounds. Those specs seem pretty darn comparable to us, but there’s no denying this thing is rail thing, so we guess we can let Samsung slide with its lofty marketing claims. Unlike the others that have attempted to craft incredibly thin Windows laptops (see: Adamo XPS ), Samsung has managed to cram this thing with power, ports, and features. There’s no optical drive, but it has Ethernet, HDMI, and USB sockets and a headphone jack. Perhaps even more impressive is what’s Inside — it’s got a brand new Core i5 2537M processor , 128GB SSD, and 4GB of RAM. Not enough for you? Its backlit keyboard, 400 nit LED-backlit display, and two 1.5-watt speakers and a sub-woofer should seal the deal. So, how much for that beauty? Samsung says it should be around $1,600, though it isn’t providing a release date right now. We are bursting at the seams to get our hands all over that daring black chassis — stay tuned for some hands-on impressions. Continue reading …Given Fujitsu’s long long history of making tablets it’s not much of a surprise to see the company venturing into the modern-day slate business, and while there won’t be a formal announcement of its 10.1-inch Windows 7 slate and future Android tablet today, the company has decided to release some details about its forthcoming touchscreen slabs here at CES . Unlike past Windows 7 slates, Fujitsu’s unnamed tablet is powered by Intel’s new Oak Trail Atom Z670 processor, which was designed specifically for tablets and should improve both battery life and performance. In addition to the new silicon, the 1.5-pound slate has 2GB of RAM, dual cameras, and an all-important removable battery bay that can store two- and four-cell batteries. It certainly sounds like one of the better spec’d Windows 7 tablets out there, and Fujitsu also seems to be using some sort of Windows skin (there’s another picture after the break), but Fujitsu isn’t only betting on a Microsoft version — it’s also planning to introduce an Android version once Honeycomb is ready for larger touchscreen devices. According to the company, the Google model won’t be ready until the end of 2011, but the Windows configuration should be ready to ship early in the second quarter. Word on the street is that Fujitsu has brought a working Windows 7 unit to Vegas as well as a waterproof tablet concept so stay tuned for all sorts of zany impressions. Continue reading …It was no secret that Amazon was working an Android app store , including some early work with developers , but Amazon’s “Appstore” (see what they did with the space there?) Developer Portal just went live. So, no doubt that this is happening, if there was any left in your mind, and we’ve got a nice stack of details on the store to tide us over until Amazon launches this thing. Amazon is looking to strike a balance between Apple’s ultra strict store rules and Google’s unvetted mayhem, and will be examining and testing each app before it goes onto the store. Amazon is also going to control pricing, with developers allowed to set a “list price” that Amazon will riff on, adjusting the price based on magical algorithms. There’s the standard 70 / 30 split, and Amazon promises that the developer will get no less than 20 percent of the list price. Apps will be promoted to folks browsing Amazon.com just like how Kindle books pop up among physical goods, and can be “pushed” to your device similarly. It’s all very intriguing if it catches on, which seems particularly likely on non-blessed devices that don’t have access to Google’s Market (like the bevy of WiFi-only tablets, the market Amazon claims to be targeting), and developers who want to get in on the action can fork over $99 today to get started. During the outfit’s Developer Summit, Peter Hill, VP of ecosystem and innovation, demonstrated how U-verse Mobile Application Development Technology can effectively enable a mobile device to interactively share media, content and apps with the TV. In theory, this could lead to the creation of apps that will enable AT&T customers to control more of the U-verse TV experience with their handsets, and possibly vice-versa. In his words, the tech “can easily connect mobile devices to set-top boxes via WiFi,” and it’ll complement DLNA with authentication. At the Summit, a brief demo saw an iPad app schedule a show and control the U-verse DVR, and a brand new option — dubbed ComplemenTV — took center stage. Essentially, the iPad was able to look at what channel was being viewed and then delivered relevant extra content on the iPad . Sounds more like an advertiser’s dream than anything else, but we’re holding out hope for more enticing uses in the near future. Unfortunately, no dates were given as to when this stuff would be rolled out, but the future’s looking bright, anyway.
