Ocosmos showcases next-gen OCS1 Windows 7 handhelds at CES 2011 (video)

So, here’s an interesting tale. That render that Ocosmos teased us with at the front-end of this week? The version with the slide-out QWERTY keyboard has been nixed, so those hoping and praying for a release date on that one can keep right on dreaming. But the other units are mighty real, and the company swears up and down it’s on track to ship ‘em both, despite not having a functioning unit here at CES. The OCS1U will be based on Intel’s Oak Trail platform (1.5GHz), and if all goes well, it’ll ship in the first half of this year. The device be based around Windows 7, and will be “priced competitively” compared to the iPad — so, in other words, around $500 or so. Other specifications will include 802.11b/g/n WiFi, optional 3G, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, a 5-inch capacitive touch panel (1024 x 600), a 32GB / 64GB SSD, microSD card slot, HDMI / USB ports, an inbuilt accelerometer and front (1.3 megapixel) / rear (3 megapixel) cameras. Furthermore, both of the joystick pads — which flank the screen on the left and right — will be totally customizable, so they can do one thing while in a game and another while handling Office duties. The OCS1E is a screen-only affair, with the same internal configuration. In order to add joysticks to this one, you’ll need either a magnetic dock or a folio case, both of which have Bluetooth joystick pads embedded. This guy’s expected to ship at the end of this year or in early 2012, but it’s obviously too early to estimate pricing. Take a closer look in the gallery below and the video just past the break. Yesterday it became clear that President Obama has picked JP Morgan banker anf Fannie Mae board member Bill Daley as his chief of staff. Daley will replace fellow Chicagoan Rahm Emanuel. The pick says quite a bit about the state of the Obama White House. Fiscal conservative Larry Kudlow immediately praised Daley , saying he would ease the White House's anti-business image. Ben Smith concurred , dubbing Daley “right of center on policy.” He is certainly right of the Obama administration, having opposed both ObamaCare and the Dodd-Frank FinReg bill. read more

Samsung promises dual-core smartphones, new tablets for MWC 2011

CES isn’t even over yet, but Samsung’s already looking forward to its next big event: Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. That show gets started on February 14th, but Sammy plans to get things going early with an announcement of dual-core smartphones and new tablets on February 13th. Such is the word straight from the company’s mobile biz president, JK Shin , who says Samsung is ” in a position to supply 4G smartphones and tablets to all the carriers in the US.” Naturally, this 4G strategy will include both LTE and WiMAX, while another major prong of the company’s future roadmap is to curtail its featurephone offering in favor of low-cost smartphone devices. Interesting times certainly lie ahead. Samsung promises dual-core smartphones, new tablets for MWC 2011 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 11:15:00 EDT. Thousands of southerners have returned to south Sudan from the north ahead of the independence referendum that could see the south split from the north to form a separate state. International envoys including Jimmy Carter, the former US president, Thabo Mbeki, the former South African president, and Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary-general, also arrived in the region on Friday to monitor the vote.

Boehner To CBO: La La La, I Can’t Hear You

enlarge New House Speaker John Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy enjoy a casual moment on the House floor. I know some of the Democrats are a little wacky, but this? These Republicans are just plain nuts . I’d forgotten what it was like to have the inmates in charge of the asylum. Their ability to communicate such deep denial seems to have paid off for them politically, at least for a while: Rescinding the federal law to overhaul the health care system, the first objective of House Republicans who ascended to power this week, would ratchet up the federal deficit by about $230 billion over the next decade and leave 32 million more Americans uninsured, according to congressional budget analysts. The rough estimate by the Congressional Budget Office also predicts that most Americans would pay more for private health insurance if the law were repealed. The 10-page forecast was delivered to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), installed a day earlier to shepherd the new GOP majority. He immediately dismissed it. The CBO’s assessment, arriving as Republicans have mobilized to make the law’s repeal the first major House vote of the new Congress, touches on a sensitive area for the GOP. Republicans are vowing to take tough measures to reduce the deficit, although they already have exempted the health care measure from rules requiring that any spending increases be accompanied by offsetting reductions so that the net effect on the deficit is null. The CBO’s analysis provided an early glimpse of the brute force politics spreading across Capitol Hill and beyond in the new era of divided government. The broad changes to the health care system, pushed through Congress by Democrats who controlled both the House and the Senate until this week, are among President Obama’s proudest domestic accomplishments – and now a central target of the GOP. On Thursday, congressional Democrats and their allies seized the budget analysts’ prediction as ammunition. “It’s plain and simple: We can’t afford to increase the deficit by nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars, especially with the very first substantive vote of the 112th Congress,” said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Montana). With equal speed, Boehner and other House Republicans repudiated the forecast of the non-partisan CBO, saying that its analysts had relied on flawed assumptions they had been provided by Democrats. “CBO is entitled to their opinion,” Boehner declared at his first news conference as speaker. Specifically, the CBO, in what it called a preliminary analysis, said that the law’s repeal would cost $145 billion by 2019 and $230 billion by 2021, then swell after that, because various money-saving and revenue-raising provisions would be undone. The 32 million uninsured Americans refers to the number predicted to gain coverage under the law.

Ex-MP David Chaytor jailed for fiddling expenses

Former Labour MP David Chaytor was jailed for 18 months today for making false Parliamentary expenses claims. Chaytor, 61, became the first politician to be convicted and sentenced over the expenses scandal which has rocked Westminster. He submitted bogus invoices to support claims totalling £22,650 for IT services and renting homes in London and his Bury North constituency. But the properties were owned by him and his mother, and he did not pay out any of his own money, Southwark Crown Court in London heard. Chaytor, of Lumbutts, Todmorden, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty last month to three counts of false accounting between November 2005 and January 2008. The former MP is now facing a…
