Vizio CES hands-on with ultrawidescreen TV, passive 3DTV, OnLive and Android clock radios

Predictably, as the leader in North American LCD sales, Vizio’s booth was absolutely filled with LCD HDTVs, including the slew of displays announced this week during CES. We got some hands-on time with the OnLive implementation Vizio’s bringing to its VIA Plus (read: Google TV) as well as the Versus single screen head-to-head gaming setup — which you can check out on Joystiq — a quick look at new soundbars with wireless subwoofers, new headphones and even an interesting Android-powered clock radio with integrated iPod dock, but our biggest question was if the new Theater 3D tech based on LG’s FPR passive 3D screens was ready for prime time. Check out a few more pics in the gallery and our impressions after the break. iHome iA63 motorized spinning iPhone alarm clock hands-on

In addition to its slick new AirPlay speaker systems , iHome’s here at CES with its usual array of iPhone alarm clocks — and the craziest by far is the new iA63, which offers a crazy motorized dock that pivots your phone from portrait to landscape at the touch of a button. Why you’d be watching anything from an iPhone from so far away that you couldn’t spin things yourself is an open question, but hey — for a list price of $99 we’ll take all the extra motors we can get. Video after the break. Canada’s New Environment Minister’s Job: Shill The Tar Sands as "Ethical Oil"

Peter Kent Official Portrait Most environment ministers’ job is to protect the environment; not in Canada. There, the environment minister is a shill for the tar stands industry. The new minister isn’t camera shy, either; he is Peter Kent, former TV anchor for Canada’s biggest news show. (He is the brother of Arthur Kent , the “Scud Stud” of the 1991 gulf war) His pitch on the tar sands: it’s not dirty oil, it’s ethical oil. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Charles Barkley: Tucker Carlson is an ‘idiot’

Click here to view this media Former basketball superstar Charles Barkley ripped into “nobody” Tucker Carlson Thursday for his attack on Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. “Now, I’m a Christian,” Carlson had announced while guest hosting on Fox News last month. “I believe fervently in second chances but Michael Vick killed dogs and he did it in a heartless and cruel way and I think, personally, he should have been executed for that.” Carlson backed off his comments earlier this week, saying he “overspoke,” but it was too late. He had already raised the ire of Sir Charles. “There’s some idiot on another station named Tucker Carlson, who called out Michael Vick,” Barkley said during halftime of a game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks. “Number one, Michael Vick, we’re all pulling for you, man. Keep doing your thing, you paid your debt to society, good luck to y’all in the playoffs.” “Tucker Carlson, who’s a nobody, he used to work for us over here, we fired him, because he sucked. Now he goes over there … He said Michael Vick should be executed, which is total B.S.,” he continued. “TV is a very powerful thing, but you just can’t get on here and say anything. He should have never said that. Michael Vick paid his debt to society and we’re all pulling for him,” Barkley added. Carlson is co-founder and editor-in-chief of the conservative website The Daily Caller. He also works as a commentator for the Fox News Channel.

NVIDIA and Fujitsu Ten’s Android Car Nav hands-on (video)

We’re seeing a few companies mixing a little Android on the dashboard, most notably Parrot , and while we think the little green guy certainly has a future in next-gen infotainment systems, we’re not quite sure this is it. It’s a prototype display, running on Tegra power and developed in conjunction with Fujitsu Ten. Right now it’s offering little more functionality than a raw Android tablet, made more car-friendly only by the addition of big home, back, and menu buttons. The UI is showing only a simple maps app, centered in Tokyo, and overall things look… early. But, we’re certainly eager to see what the companies can do with Android on the dash — down the road a little.
