Former dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier back in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier made a surprise return from exile to his Caribbean homeland on Sunday, saying he wanted to help in the rebuilding of his earthquake-battered nation. It was the first time that Duvalier, who is now 59 but was once the world's youngest head of state at 19, had returned to Haiti since he was forced out in 1986 by a popular uprising and U.S. pressure. His unexpected return comes at a time when Haiti, still the poorest state in the Western Hemisphere, is facing political uncertainty following November 28 presidential and legislative elections whose preliminary results have triggered fraud…

‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier back in Haiti after long exile

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti-Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier returned Sunday to Haiti after nearly 25 years in exile, a surprising and perplexing move that comes as his country struggles with a political crisis and the stalled effort to recover from last year’s devastating earthquake. Duvalier, wearing a dark suit and tie, arrived on an Air France jet to hugs from supporters at the Port-au-Prince airport. He was calm as he was led into the immigration office and did not immediately make a statement to a waiting crowd of journalists. “He is happy to be back in this country, back in his home,” said Mona Beruaveau, a candidate for Senate in a Duvalierist party who spoke to the…

WaPo Columnist on CNN: ‘How Much Time Do We Have Left to Talk About How Stupid Sarah Palin Is?’

The Washington Post had better refrain from telling other media outlets to tone down their rhetoric, for on Sunday, one of the paper's longest running columnists asked on national television, “How much time do we have left to talk about how stupid Sarah Palin is?” Such was said by Richard Cohen, a man that has been with the Post since 1968, towards the end of CNN's “Fareed Zakaria GPS” (video follows with transcript and commentary): FAREED ZAKARIA, HOST: Richard Cohen, do you have answers? RICHARD COHEN, WASHINGTON POST: I have nothing but answers. I don't think for a second that Sarah Palin knew the meaning of blood libel. I just don't. There's nothing in her background which suggests it. And if she did, I don't think she used it all that inappropriately. I mean, if it refers to a false accusation for which a community is blamed then she was right. BERNARD-HENRI LEVY, FRENCH PHILOSOPHER/INTELLECTUAL: Hold on. You think Sarah Palin is stupid enough not to know what a blood libel is? COHEN: How much time do we have left to talk about how stupid Sarah Palin is? LEVY: No, no, no. Frankly, I don't believe — (CROSSTALK) Fortunately, James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal was there to offer some sanity: JAMES TARANTO, WALL STREET JOURNAL: Look, the blood libel is a — is a lie about the killing of children. Remember, there was a child who was killed in this attack. And the “New York Times” leading the way but others particularly in the media and a few politicians, but mostly this has been the media, went out and blamed conservatives, particularly conservative media figures, which is what Sarah Palin is, for the death, among others, of this child. So blood libel, yes, she's not using it in the literal sense. It is often used in metaphorical senses. I could give you a list of examples from the “New York Times,” the “Washington Post,” various liberal commentators, who've thrown around the term blood libel — LEVY: I'm waiting for the list. Give me the list of the example of the metaphorical use of blood libel if it is – TARANTO: Representative Deutsch — Representative Peter Deutsch in 2000, a Democrat of Florida, said — LEVY: If you use blood libel in this way, maybe you are right — TARANTO: Nobody has said it was obscene until now. LEVY: I say today it is obscene in whoever mouth it is. ZAKARIA: And we are going to try to keep this at a — at a civil level, which means of course we're going to leave and everyone can quarrel off camera. Hmmm. So I guess calling Sarah Palin stupid is civil in Zakaria's view. Color me very unsurprised. Nice job of toning down the rhetoric, boys! (H/T The Blaze )

Does Jim Hoft see Leprechauns too?

enlarge Credit: LGF Hey, we’ve all made mistakes, but it takes a lot of work to come up with as many looney smears of President Obama as many on the right circulate including—Jim Hoft. This one is classic! Wingnut Blogger Jim Hoft Mistakes Closed Caption for Applause Prompt at Tucson Memorial Just when you think popular right wing blogger Jim “Dim” Hoft (Gateway Pundit) couldn’t possibly post anything more stupid than his last post, he finds a way to take it to the next level of numbskullitude. Today’s entry in the “Hoft Chronicles of Sheer Stoopit” has him trying to claim that the White House prompted the audience to applaud at the “Together We Thrive” memorial (with his usual taste and class, Hoft calls it a “pep rally”): If White House Was Surprised by Applause at Tucson Pep Rally… Why Did They Ask For It On Jumbotron? — That’s right. Hoft doesn’t understand that he’s looking at the closed captioning for deaf audience members. Wingnut Blogger Jim Hoft Mistakes Closed Caption for Applause Prompt at Tucson Memorial It is Gateway Pundit after all, can we expect anything more? But the stupid, it hurts. And tbogg finds that Pajamas media has jumped head first into the Jumotron conspiracy. Ed Driscoll, who is blogs at PajamasMedia because his wife does some legal work for them and having him there it’s like childcare for her, jumps on the Hoft Stupid Express : I suppose the excuse du jour will be that these weren’t stage directions, just merely the assumption that the president would have to pause while the expected hosannas rained down upon him. But presumably, if you put “APPLAUSE” into the text on a Jumbotron, a sufficient number of people in the audience will do just that. Which leads to this amusing exchange with people who took the time to type slowly to Ed in teh hopes that he would understand: # 1. Gadfly It’s closed captioning for the deaf. January 15, 2011 – 2:01 pm Link to this Comment | Reply # 2. Ed Driscoll Really? The deaf can’t see the people applauding all around them? January 15, 2011 – 2:14 pm Link to this Comment | Reply # 3. Stephen Sherman “For the deaf” who are watching it on TV. It’s called closed captioning, Ed. It doesn’t appear at the event, but is added to the TV signal through the wizardry of modern technology. January 15, 2011 – 2:21 pm Link to this Comment | Reply * Ed Driscoll How can it “not appear at the event” when it’s in a photo of the Jumbotron shot at the event? January 15, 2011 – 2:25 pm Link to this Comment | Reply # 4. Peg Please remember that this was also broadcast to the overflow audience who were not in the auditorium and that a professional captioner is not going to be thinking “Well, they can SEE the clapping so I don’t need to include that”. They are trained to write in or etc. They write exactly what they hear. If you want to tell for sure or not if it was “scripted” then go to the part of the speech where Obama says “Gabby opened her eyes.” According to reporters, that section was NOT in the original written speech. So, if this were actually captioned live, it would be included. If it were scripted, it would not be included. It’s really not that hard to investigate this. Did anyone bother to call the University and ask to speak to the person who is responsible for captioning and find out the facts? Stupid is contagious.

Research shocker! Keyless car entry systems can be hacked easily, elegantly

We know you are vigilant enough not to trust your car’s security to a wireless system, but plenty of other folks like the convenience of putting away the metallic keys and getting into their vehicles with a bit of Bond-like swagger. Professor Srdjan Capkun of ETH Zurich found himself perched on the fence between these two groups when he recently purchased a vehicle with a keyless entry system, so he did what any good researcher would: he tried to bypass its security measures. In total, he and his team tested 10 models from eight car makers and their results were pretty conclusive: each of the tested vehicles was broken into and driven away using a very simple and elegant method. Keyless entry systems typically work by sending a low-powered signal from the car to your key fob, with the two working only when they’re near each other, but the wily Zurich profs were able to intercept and extend that signal via antennas acting as repeaters, resulting in your key activating your car even when it’s nowhere near it. The signal-repeating antennae have to be pretty close to both the key and the car, but that’s why heist movies stress the importance of teamwork. Hit the source link for all the chilling details. Blunt assessments of ex-President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and his family, their lavish lifestyles, and graft contained in cables released by WikiLeaks didn’t spark the uprising in Tunisia, said State Department spokesman PJ Crowley today. Many commentators have suggested that the cables contributed to the discontent, with some saying…
