Vestas Wins $1.5 Million Clean Energy Award, Immediately Gives it All Away

The event drawing the most buzz on day two of the World Future Energy Summit was certainly the Zayed Future Energy Prize award ceremony. The show was held at the preposterously opulent Emirates Palace — rumor has it that it’s the 2nd most expensive building ever built (whatever that means) — and featured speeches from luminaries like Rajendra Pachouri. This year, the $1.5 million prize was awarded to the Dutch wind power company Vestas — and Vestas immediately proceeded to give it all away. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Obama hosts Hu as world powers seek common ground

Washington: President Barack Obama is lavishing the grandest of White House welcomes on Chinese President Hu Jintao as the leaders of the world’s two top powers try to find common ground on economic and security issues without alienating their domestic audiences. With many Americans blaming China at least in part for the high U.S. unemployment rate, both presidents will be looking to build trust in a relationship grounded in mutual interest but troubled by intractable disputes. It follows an up and down two years in which an assertive China initially cold-shouldered the U.S. on climate change, did little to reel in its unpredictable ally North Korea and responded limply to U.S. pleas to…

MegaReader brings true multitasking to the iPhone, lets you walk and read at the same time (video)

Galaxy S owners will already be familiar with the awesome power of overlaying text on a live view of their phone’s camera feed, but now their iPhone counterparts get to join in the fun as well. MegaReader, an e-reading app that’s survived the cutthroat App Store waters long enough to reach version 2.1, has just added a “Heads Up Display” feature to its list of attributes. Its function is to make your iPhone appear transparent, which is achieved by relaying camera images of what’s behind the phone to its front. A real life saver, a mere gimmick, or a golden opportunity for a hilarious promo video? Why not all three? SUDAN: Referendum vote over, now the hard work begins

JUBA, 19 January 2011 (IRIN) – The referendum vote on the future of Southern Sudan defied critics by passing off peacefully, but the region still faces challenges that could threaten stability, say experts and officials. “The referendum environment was peaceful, secure and orderly to allow voters in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights with relative ease,” Victor Tonchi, head of the African Union observer mission, told reporters at the release of a preliminary report on 16 January. Despite previous warnings of the risk of violence, the 9-15 January voting period was peaceful and calm, observers said. Enthusiastic voters queued patiently for hours, with a high turnout in the…

British man convicted for riding Segway on the sidewalk, can’t ride on the street either

The United Kingdom’s Department for Transportation passed regulations making Segways subject to road traffic laws four and a half years ago, which effectively banned their use on Britain’s sidewalks . And now, after years of apparent non-enforcement, UK’s Highway Act of 1835 has finally claimed its first Segway-riding victim. An unemployed factory worker was convicted of riding a motor vehicle on a “pavement”, which apparently is another word for sidewalk in the Queen’s English, and was ordered to pay a total of
