If Hosni Mubarak really has a death wish, this won’t be cheering him up: Egypt today moved to freeze all of Mubarak’s foreign assets, reports the AP. The move encompasses any assets of Mubarak’s wife, two sons, or their wives; Mubarak’s domestic assets were frozen in the days following his…

Zotac’s Fusion-based Zbox AD03 Blu-ray HTPC gets reviewed, smiled upon

While AMD’s Zacate E-350 APU has managed to find its way into a number of laptops, it’s not exactly simple to find a desktop based on Fusion right now. Thankfully, Zotac was champing at the bit to be one of the first, and its Zbox AD03 / AD03 Plus has just hit the test bench over at Hot Hardware . All told, the results were fairly predictable, with the Fusion APU running laps around the prior Atom-based version . Of course, “laps” is a relative term, and while it hasn’t single-handedly redefined the SFF PC sector, it has provided a real alternative to Intel’s stable of underwhelming nettop chips. Across the board, the Zacate E-350 managed to hold its own, with the only real issue being “lackluster Flash video acceleration.” We’re told that updated drivers are expected to remedy that, however, so there’s really little to gripe about from a numbers standpoint. As for value proposition? The AD03 Plus (ringing up at $529.99) seems like a worse deal with its skimpy 2GB of RAM and (comparatively sluggish) 250GB HDD, while the barebones AD03 (which lists for $439.99) could be turned into quite the powerhouse with 4GB of memory and a speedy SSD. Head on down to the source link to get your nerd on, but only if you’re interested in scratching that DIY itch that’s been so bothersome of late. On Today: NBC Reporter Advances Dem Talking Points on GOP’s ‘Severe’ Budget Cuts

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, on Monday's Today show, lumped the Wisconsin and federal budget fights together and depicted the Republicans, in both cases, as being on the defensive. Starting in Wisconsin O'Donnell reported that over the weekend “Protesters backing union workers vented anger” but didn't mention the Tea Party had a counter-protest. Then O'Donnell, moving to the budget struggle on Capitol Hill, passed along Democratic talking points as she reported: “Democrats claim Republicans are too stubborn and their budget cuts too severe” and advanced: “The '90s government shutdown, with empty offices and closed national parks, left the Republican majority then with real political damage. A cautionary tale today.” O'Donnell aired sound bites from Democratic Senators Dick Durbin and Chuck Schumer on the offensive, warning against a government shutdown with Schumer charging Speaker John Boehner with being “reckless.” However when it came to the GOP side O'Donnell aired a clip of Senator Tom Coburn defensively admitting: “It's good for political rhetoric to talk about a government shutdown, but I don't know anybody that wants that to happen.” The following is a transcript of the segment as it was aired on the February 21 Today show: SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: Budget battles are raging in states across the country and on Capitol Hill where the government is facing a looming deadline that could lead to the first shutdown in 15 years. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell is on Capitol Hill this morning with the latest. Kelly, good morning. KELLY O'DONNELL: Hi there, Savannah. Well after so many days of protest in Wisconsin and so few days left here in D.C. to avoid a federal budget crisis, the real political question this morning is which side will blink first? The pressure ratcheted up in Madison, Wisconsin over the weekend. Protesters backing union workers vented anger aimed at the state's new Republican governor. Governor Scott Walker went on national television to defend his effort to drop some collective bargaining rights and get unionized state and local workers to pay more for health care and pensions. [On screen headline: "Government Shutdown? States Battle On Budgets As Federal Crisis Looms"] GOV. SCOTT WALKER: And I think right now, frugality is in. People expect us to make tough decisions to make sure we don't pass the buck on to our kids and our grandkids. And that's exactly what we are doing here in Wisconsin. O'DONNELL: And here in Washington, where buck-passing got its name, some Democrats are predicting a government shutdown when current funding runs out March 4th. SEN. DICK DURBIN: If we end up shutting down the government and calling into question whether we're going to meet our obligations for Social Security checks and paying our troops, then that is an absolute, utter failure. O'DONNELL: Democrats claim Republicans are too stubborn and their budget cuts too severe. SEN. CHUCK SCHUMER: Speaker Boehner has said, even before negotiations, that he wants it a certain way. That is reckless. That's what Newt Gingrich did in 1995. O'DONNELL: The '90s government shutdown, with empty offices and closed national parks, left the Republican majority then with real political damage. A cautionary tale today. SEN. TOM COBURN: It's good for political rhetoric to talk about a government shutdown, but I don't know anybody that wants that to happen. O'DONNELL: The Republican led House, working around the clock till 5am Saturday, did pass a budget extension with $61 billion in cuts for the current year, to keep the government operating. But because the Senate won't agree to such deep cuts, House Budget committee chairman Paul Ryan expects another round of talks. REP. PAUL RYAN: We are not going to accept these extremely high levels of spending. We are not looking for a government shutdown. And I think we'll have negotiations with short-term extensions with spending cuts in the interim is my guess. O'DONNELL: And the challenge is members of Congress are back in their home districts and states all week. Behind the scenes here, Senate staffers are poring over what the House passed over the weekend, looking for any areas of compromise they might find. But when everybody comes back to town, there will only be five days, before that deadline, to reach some sort of an agreement. And we know, in Capitol Hill terms, that's just not much time at all. —Geoffrey Dickens is the Senior News Analyst at the Media Research Center. You can follow him on Twitter here

Since Conservatives love a good bully, Chris Cristie has become a favorite among them, but how does that justify David Gregory’s claim about him on Meet The Press? MR. GREGORY: And you’re teeing up — Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey , talk about austerity . He gave a speech here in Washington this week that got rave reviews in part because of his plain language about taking on issues like Social Security . Here’s what he said. GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE (R-NJ): You’re going to have to raise the retirement age for Social Security . Ho , ho! I just said it, and I’m still standing here. I did not vaporize into the carpeting, and I said it. MR. GREGORY: He didn’t vaporize into the carpeting, Rick Santelli . I mean, this is the kind of plain talk that people are responding to. And yet, you just heard from Senator Durbin , you know, they want to take Social Security off the table right now in terms of dealing with that debt reduction. The only people giving him rave reviews are Conservatives, so why did Gregory frame it in a way that appears all Americans are digging Christie’s shtick? You would think that in NJ, Christie would have a 70% approval rating, but the fact is he’s only a tad over fifty. Wow, you may not have known that because of all the positive media fanboy love going around. Eric Boehlert: For instance, if you look at the polling, a small sliver of potential Republican primary voters are responding to Christie in that they pick him as their first choice for a 2012 candidate. But that sliver hardly represents any sort of national response from the “people” to Christie’s partisan rhetoric. Meanwhile, in his home state Christie enjoys decent support, with an approval rating of about 50 percent. Although if you only listened to the Christie media chatter from inside Beltway you’d assume his poll numbers were in the sky-high, 60 or 70 percent range. Perhaps more telling though, is the recent poll that showed if Christie ran against Obama in 2012, the governor would lose his home state by nearly 20 points. That’s right, Christie would get trounced by Obama in N.J. I realize much of the D.C. press corps is crushing on Christie. But before they announce that “people” are responding to the governor’s “plain talk,” pundits might want to find out if that response extends beyond their professional class. President Obama trounces him by twenty points now. Christie can gab with the best of them , but why does the Beltway elite class immediately transfer what the AEI crowd thinks of him over to all Americans? It’s ridiculous. And getting back to reality, it’s a complete fallacy that raising the age of Social Security has to happen for Social Security to remain solvent forever. It’s a Conservative lie and C&L readers and Dems all over the country know this except for the Villager class. Atrios: I’m never quite sure if Villagers are just unable to distinguish “the GOP operatives and other Villagers we talk to” from “the people” or if they truly believe (perhaps correctly) that they are just the only people who matter. I think it’s kinda of both, but if I had to make a choice I’d tell Duncan that they believe that they are just the only people who matter.
