Garmin’s $23 Chirp wireless beacon brings geocaching thrills to Oregon, Dakota GPS units

Looking for an avenue to join millions of others in geocaching, eh? We know, there’s hardly a better way to spend a weekend than by playing a sophisticated game of hide-and-seek, and Garmin’s right there with us. If you, like it, are stuck in Kansas with nary a Jayhawk game in sight, this here pebble is the answer to all of your boredom woes. The Chirp is a wireless beacon that’s designed to work with any compatible wireless-enabled Garmin handheld (the Oregon , Dakota and the recently announced GPSMAP handhelds are mentioned by name), and once you’ve set it up to cooperate with your device, it’ll automatically transmit program coordinates so other cachers can find each stage of your multicache — it’s touch-and-go in its simplest form. The whole thing measures just 1.3- x 0.9-inches, weighs under an ounce and can be had for just $22.99. So yeah, good luck sticking to Segway polo with an offer like that. Victor Davis Hanson has a particularly pointed analysis of Obama’s recent rally: I was fascinated watching the recent Obama campaign stops, particularly the contrast with 2008. Gone are the faux columns and classical backdrops. There are no more vero possumus seals (now they fall off the podium). All pretense of “no more red states, no more blue states” nonpartisanship has long ago been dropped. Even the shrill, boilerplate evocation of “Bush-Cheney did it” sounds strained. The blatant divisive appeal to unions, young people, and “black folks” is now unapologetic. Them versus Us is the new theme. Gone is the pretense of inclusivity. Even the fainting now seems rigged rather than spontaneous, the faux cadences forced and more Rev. Wrightish rather than inspired. The eyes of the crowd roll, and have lost their glazed zombie look of 2008. It all reminds me of the failed comeback tour of the proverbial fading rock star, the desperate promos for the sinking supposed blockbuster Hollywood movie, or perhaps something akin to Jerry Ford’s WIN buttons or the Carter desk thump. Read the whole thing.

Creating Value In Our Everyday Waste

Truck filling with liquid natural gas (LNG) collected from landfills – new design operating at full scale. Image credit:Waste Management This guest post by Wes Muir of Waste Management outlines the firm’s involvement with recent energy innovations, in celebration of Energy Awareness Month . Sometimes the greatest treasures can come from the most unlikely places. Take renewable energy, for instance. How afraid of Meg Whitman are the Dems and their handmaidens in the National Association of Gals ? Last week, the National Organization of Women and the PAC of the California NOW chapter took heat for their endorsement of state Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) over Meg Whitman (R) in the gubernatorial race in the wake of comments by a Brown aide that Whitman was a “whore.” At the time, national NOW President Terry O’Neill said that anyone who “from here on” calls a woman a “whore” should be fired. She might want to have a talk with California NOW President Parry Bellasalma, who today told TPM in response to a question that “Meg Whitman could be described as ‘a political whore.’ Yes, that’s an accurate statement.” There’s no way the NAGS would allow ANY liberal woman to be called a “whore” under any circumstances…even if she were actually taking money for sex. What a loser organization.

This guy wasn’t going to win anyway, but this won’t help : The last name of Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney is misspelled as “Whitey” on electronic-voting machines in nearly two dozen wards — about half in predominantly African-American areas — and election officials said Wednesday the problem cannot be corrected by Election Day. Good luck with all that.
