France braces for riots as protests turn violent

A menacing new spectre hung over the French pension reform dispute yesterday – the threat of a re-run of the multi-racial suburban riots of five years ago. As petrol shortages spread and the country braced for a new day of strikes and marches today, there were violent incidents and clashes between police and youths in a dozen cities and suburbs around France. Although the incidents occurred on the fringes of demonstrations by Lycée (sixth-form) students, most of the violence came from roaming groups of hooded…

Bose enters single-ear Bluetooth headset market with expected swagger and price tag

“It’s not every day you see a company release a Bluetooth headset ” is something we’d like to say, but alas, it was not meant to be. Bose is the latest, launching what it claims is its first single-ear Bluetooth headset. The aural implant carries the family name and touted audio quality / proprietary technology, but functionality-wise, it’s not much different than your run-of-the-mill earpiece. Of course, that branding carries a lot of weight with some folks, and for them, plan on paying just shy of $150 (before tax) when it comes out late November. Your weekly dose of bravado can be found in the press release after the break. No real surprise here : Crystal Cathedral Ministries, an Orange County landmark and megachurch founded by television evangelist Robert H. Schuller, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday morning. The cathedral owes about about $7.5 million to unsecured creditors. The bankruptcy filing seeks court protection from its creditors. In a statement issued Monday, Senior Pastor Sheila Schuller Coleman said the bankruptcy filing was a necessity because a “small number of creditors chose to file lawsuits and obtained writ of attachment.” She said the cathedral also had no choice because a committee of creditors decided not to extend a moratorium to allow continued talks about a payment plan. “For these reasons, the Ministry now finds it necessary to seek the protection of a Chapter 11,” she said. They desperately need new management in there if they have any hopes of saving that church from destroying itself.

That’s up a point from last week and a continuing sign of trouble for Democrats: Election Day is just two weeks away, and Republican candidates hold a nine-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, October 17, 2010. Forty-eight percent (48%) of respondents say they would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate, while 39% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent. Even more worrisome for Democrats, however, is the finding that among the voters who are most closely following the midterm elections Republicans hold a 55% to 36% lead. While the margin has varied somewhat from week-to-week, Republicans have been consistently ahead on the Generic Ballot for over a year, and their lead has run as high as 12 points and as low as three points. When Barack Obama first took office as president of the United States, the Democrats enjoyed a seven-point lead on the Generic Ballot. In news of other things that have changed since Obama took office, this from Mark Knoller of CBS: National Debt stood at $10.626-trillion the day Mr. Obama took office. Latest listing on Treasury website shows Debt at $13.665-trillion. I think it’s safe to say the two items are related.
