Rachel Maddow Confronts Angry, Uninformed Voters

There’s nothing unfair, disrespectful or manipulative about what the MSNBC host does here. She simply asks these Joe Miller supporters in Alaska to explain why they’re so upset and … they can’t. Related Entries October 28, 2010 The Rise of Sewer Money October 27, 2010 Playing the Mommy Card

Novice Candidates Caught in Viral Video Vortex

This is the year of the neophyte in politics. Anti-incumbent sentiment in general and the tea party in particular have brought fresh faces forward. But those candidates may not be prepared for the brutalities of a modern campaign. (Oct. 28)

Electric Audi A2 Claims Distance Record on Public Roads Thanks to Lithium Metal Polymer Batteries

Image: DMB Energy Last Spring, I wrote about a DIY electric car that broke a world record by going 624 miles on one charge. As impressive as that was, it was done in a controlled environment, driving on a track at an average of 25 miles per hour. Now, a new record has been broken by two German firms, Lekker Energie and DBM Energy, with a converted electric Audi A2…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Halliburton Blamed for Shoddy Construction in Gulf Oil Disaster

Three of four tests showed that the cement mixture used by Halliburton in the construction of BP’s ill-fated oil well in the Gulf was unstable, but the mixture was used anyway, a presidential commission investigating the disaster has found . The only successful test, which BP did not know about, has since come under suspicion. AP via Google: The panel said that of four tests done in February and April by Halliburton, only one—the last—showed the mix would hold. But the results of that single successful test were not shared with BP, and may not have reached Halliburton, before the cement was pumped, according to a letter sent to commissioners Thursday by chief investigative counsel Fred H. Bartlit Jr. BP had in hand at the time of the blowout the results of only one of the tests—a February analysis sent to BP by Halliburton in a March 8 e-mail that indicated the cement could fail. The slurry tested in that case was a slightly different blend, and assumed a slightly different well design, but there is no indication that Halliburton flagged the problem for BP, or that BP had concerns, the letter said. Independent tests conducted for the commission by Chevron on a nearly identical mixture were also released Thursday. The results concluded that the cement mix was unstable, raising questions about the validity of Halliburton’s final test. Toyota is Turning Old NiMH Batteries Into New Batteries

Image: Toyota The Circle of Battery-Life The more hybrid cars and battery electric cars are on the road, the more battery pack we’ll eventually have to deal with. It’s still a better problem to have than to have to deal with vehicles that burn significantly more non-renewable fossil fuels, with the waste products going straight in the atmosphere. At least the batteries are recycled, and consumers are being paid for their old batteries (which usually can still hold a lot of charge, so some might be

Microsoft announces a record first-quarter revenue of $16.20 billion, $5.41 billion in profit

Microsoft just beat analyst expectations, announcing $16.20 billion in revenue for the first quarter of its 2011 fiscal year, with $5.41 billion in profit. Microsoft cites Office 2010, the sustained “PC refresh cycle,” and 38 percent growth in the Xbox 360 biz for its good news, with overall revenue up 25 percent over the same quarter last year and a 51 percent gain in profit. The Xbox 360 has been at the top of the console heap for four months running, which can’t hurt. Microsoft will have an earnings call to discuss its results at 5:30PM EDT, so we’ll be keeping our ears peeled for Steve Ballmer to pull a Steve Jobs , hijack the call, and rag hard on the competition — if only we lived in a world of such beautiful symmetry. World Growth International Slammed by Scientists For Being Front Group For Big Timber

This one’s probably a bit insider-info for most TreeHugger readers, and I admit I’m partially to blame for it, but bear with me because it’s if you care about rampant greenwashing and deforestation it’s important: A group of prominent scientists has issued an open letter challenging the objectivity of World Growth International , challenging the group’s and its leader Alan Oxley ‘s, objectivity in addressing the environmental and social impact of
