U.S. Economy Quickens Its Pace

The U.S. economy had a bit of a pickup during this year’s third quarter, showing growth of 2 percent in an ever-so-slight acceleration toward economic improvement. Meanwhile, the housing market remains limp and high unemployment recalcitrantly hovers at 9.6 percent. —JCL The BBC: The US economy grew at an annualised rate of 2% in the July-to-September period, an acceleration on the previous quarter, official figures have shown. The expansion came despite continuing high unemployment and weakness in the housing market. The 2% figure is an improvement on the upwardly revised 1.7% increase between April and June, but less than the 3.7% growth recorded from January to March. The House will look very different when the new Congress comes to town in January. Most if not all of the so-called Blue Dog Dems will be gone, many other Dems with them, and only the craziest of the bunch who come from districts that have been gerrymandered to elect anyone not named Hitler as long as he or she is a Dem will be left: Based on the RealClearPolitics ratings of House races, 62 of 76 seats held by a member of the Progressive Caucus are “safe.” For the Blue Dogs, the picture is much more bleak. Of the 54 districts held by a member of that caucus, only six are “safe.” With moderate and conservative Democrats in much greater trouble than progressives, it is a virtual certainty that the “average House Democrat” will be much more liberal when Congress reconvenes next year. “You can call it the ideological paradox,” said Isaac Wood, the House race editor for Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball. “If Republicans clean up in the elections next week, the House will become more conservative, but the Democratic Caucus will actually become more liberal. The ranks of the Blue Dogs will be decimated, but the Progressive Caucus will be largely untouched.” Seats belonging to 82 percent of Democrats in the Congressional Progressive Caucus — a group bound together by liberal goals like universal health care and gay marriage — are considered safe contests. As a whole, 48 percent of Democratic House seats are safe. On the other side of the aisle you’ll have a much more conservative GOP in charge. This should make for some very entertaining moments in congressional hearings and floor debates.

Robin Roberts Grills Carly Fiorina on ‘Too Extreme’ Sarah Palin

Apparently one of the most pressing issues in the California senatorial race is whether or not Sarah Palin is “too extreme.” Good Morning America's Robin Roberts on Friday pressed Carly Fiorina twice on that issue, insisting on knowing why the former Alaska governor hasn't been campaigning for the Republican. She demanded, “We know that Sarah Palin has visited California recently, but she was not campaigning for you. Why not Sarah Palin? Is she too extreme for you ?” The co-host followed-up: “Down in Florida, Charlie Crist had an ad campaign saying Sarah Palin is just too extreme for some Republicans. ” Barbara Boxer has not appeared on GMA during the 2010 campaign season, so there's been no opportunity for the show's host to grill the Senator on supporters such as director Rob Reiner, who recently compared the Tea Party to Nazis . read more

Take a Look at the Grassroots & Gasroots of the Fracking Fight

We’ve written a bunch about fracking lately–less colloquially called hydraulic fracturing for natural gas. It’s an increasingly hot issue in New York and Pennsylvania as companies attempt to access the trillion dollars worth of natural gas locked up in the Marcellus Shale …and create a lot of problems for groundwa… Read the full story on TreeHugger

ITRI shows off 6-inch FlexUPD AMOLED, hybrid 2D/3D display, makes lots of promises

Hey, remember when Taiwan’s ITRI said that flexible TFT-EPD displays would be ready for smartphones by 2009 ? Yeah, well, keep that in mind when reading about this new 6-inch flexible display the company says will be released in a line of e-readers “very soon.” It’s called the FlexUPD, a 1mm thick AMOLED with a 5cm folding radius, 150nits brightness, and “unbreakable” construction. ITRI is also talking up its switchable 2D/3D display that we saw earlier , able to display both types of content simultaneously and do so without the requirement of goofy glasses. That tech is called i2/3DW and is set to “revitalize the [display] industry by revolutionizing the concept of 3D viewing.” You keep on believing, ITRI, we’ll just keep on waiting. HTC Trophy review

HTC Trophy review

Why yes, yes it is another Windows Phone 7 device review. Not that we’re complaining. It’s not everyday that a new mobile operating system this polished arrives at our doorstep. Having already gone in depth with Microsoft’s entirely new OS and half a dozen or so other WP7 devices , it’s now time to dive deep into the life and times of the HTC Trophy. And it’s about time. We first saw the words “HTC” and “Trophy” on the same page in a roadmap leak all the way back in 2009. Several of the leaked handsets eventually launched — but not the 3-inch portrait QWERTY Trophy (codenamed, Spark ) running Windows Mobile 6.5. Perhaps that original design was scrapped along with WinMo’s relevancy to the consumer smartphone market. We don’t know and we may never know. What we can tell you is what it’s like to live with a production HTC Trophy for a week — an average speced touchscreen slate offering anything but a middle-of-the-road experience. This review is primarily of the HTC Trophy hardware. Check out our full review of Windows Phone 7 for our thoughts on the OS. My military friends have a favorite saying: “If you're not catching flak, you're not over the target.” This campaign season, conservative women in politics have caught more flak than WWII Lancaster bombers over Berlin. Despite daily assaults from the Democratic machine, liberal media and Hollyweird — not to mention the stray fraggings from Beltway GOP elites — the ladies of the right have maintained their dignity, grace and wit. Voters will remember in November. When “comedian” and “The View” co-host Joy Behar lambasted GOP Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle this week as a “b*tch” who would be “going to h*ll” for using images of illegal alien gang members in a campaign ad, Angle responded by sending a lovely bouquet of flowers and a good-humored note: “Joy, Raised $150,000 online yesterday. Thanks for your help. Sincerely, Sharron Angle.” read more
