Ah, now we’re talking. Over the years, HomePlug and wireless HD / HDMI haven’t exactly “taken off.” Routing internet signals over a home’s power network has been hampered by subpar transmission rates, and using wireless in the home for anything other than basic web duties has shown to be either too costly or too much hassle. Now, however, the HomePlug Powerline Alliance and the Wi-Fi Alliance have seen the light, and they’re joining hands in order to jointly push their technologies to homeowners. Focused primarily on ” facilitating interoperability of smart grid applications,” these organizations are fixing to enable SEP 2.0 applications to operate across a diverse mix of wireless and wired networks, and hopefully they’ll reach out to product manufacturers while they’re at it. Here’s hoping they’ll be able to nail it — the demand is certainly there, but the execution thus far has been downright depressing. Continue reading …Electoral commission spokesman Bamba Yacouba has announced vote tallies from about 2.2 million of the country’s 5.7 million registered voters so far. The results show Gbagbo with about 35 percent of votes cast, compared to roughly the same amount for opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, according to an Associated Press tabulation. Ex-president Henri Konan Bedie was in third place with about 27 percent. The vote, the first since a brief civil war split the world’s No. 1 cocoa producer in two, is seen as a critical turning point in Ivory Coast’s history. Many hope it will restore stability and reunify the country, but some…

Continue reading …It’s all up there in black and white, but we’ll be happy to spell it out again here — it seems that Apple has decided to extend the length of iTunes song previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds. Sounds just fine to us, but not to the recipients of this letter, who are told the change is happening whether they like it or not and it’s for their own good. “We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases,” the document reads, but without giving the music labels any way to say no. We don’t actually know the origin of this particular document, so we’re not saying this is a done deal by any means, but if the letter’s legit this you’re looking at the world’s largest online music store telling the labels to put up and shut up — or else peddle their tunes somewhere else. Update: It’s worth noting that CNET reported that iTunes song previews might double in length about two months ago. Apple informs labels that iTunes song previews will be 90 seconds long, hopes they don’t mind? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 23:13:00 EDT. Continue reading …In one of his latest attempts to get his face on every television network in America before the election, President Obama appeared on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart to plead his case to the hip, young, leftist voters who love that show. Obama claimed he had done so much, “We have done things that some folks don't even know about!” In a more serious interview, Obama told the Los Angeles Times the economic mess he “inherited” required him to take so many rapid actions that he could not “communicate effectively to the public in any coherent way.” This has to be the most ridiculous spin to emerge to explain the Why Republicans Massacred Us question: Barack Obama somehow failed to communicate his “accomplishments.” This man has been everywhere from MTV to CNBC to Univision to the entire NBC-Universal slate of channels selling his policies. And when he’s not there, the reporters do his bidding regardless. How can a man who was sold to us as an absolutely magic combination of Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt now suggest he was made “incoherent” by the economy? read more
