Olbermann Suspended from MSNBC over Campaign Contributions

MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann joked after the midterms, responding to taunts from certain Fox News types, that he was still around despite the lashing Dems took at the polls. But as it turns out, he might have committed career suicide, or something close to it, on his own. Perhaps Olbermann wasn’t up on the company rules about campaign contributions, or perhaps he thought that somehow his might go unnoticed, but Politico followed his money trail and the network’s top brass lowered the boom on Friday.

Pandigital Novel PRD09TW e-reader hits the FCC

Pandigital may have not exactly hit a home run with its first Novel e-reader , but it looks like it might already be coming back for another try with a new model. That device recently hit the FCC with the model name PRD09TW, and it seems to be mostly identical in appearance to the current Pandigital Novel, with the notable exception of four buttons along the bottom. Unfortunately, there’s no specs to be found, but it does appear to boast the same 7-inch screen size (here’s hoping for capacitive this time around), and the test reports do at least reveal the presence of WiFi. What’s more, as the folks at Wireless Goodness have noted, a 6-inch E Ink-based reader from Pandigital has also hit the FCC alongside this new Novel, although it’s not clear if it’s actually a new model or just an early version of the company’s Novel Personal reader (the only different is a slight change in button placement). In fact, the same could be said of the PRD09TW, but the current Novel did already hit the FCC back in May . Pandigital Novel PRD09TW e-reader hits the FCC originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 14:03:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

Weekday Vegetarian: Beet Greens and Mushrooms on Toast

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I harvested the last of my beets this week and just roasted them simply in some olive oil with a bit of salt and pepper and they were wonderful. VOTD: Profile of a Foley Artist

Most serious film fans have a good idea of the basics of foley work: sound engineers in a studio recreate (or, in many cases, simply create) all the incidental sounds that fill out the soundtrack of a film. Most of us have probably seen Ben Burtt talk about banging on high-tension wires to create laser sounds for Star Wars, or how he layered sounds [1] and waved a microphone to create the signature… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : /Film Discovery Date : 05/11/2010 18:26 Number of articles : 7

Burma’s Denial of Service, Democracy

As Burma approaches its first election in 20 years, a “distributed denial of service” attack has paralyzed Internet use within the dictator-ed country, knocking Burmese citizens from online communication in what analysts believe is an attempt by the ruling military dictatorship to restrict the flow of information in the country. The “distributed denial of service” attack is just a fancy way of saying that many computers were programmed to very rapidly visit certain web sites, overwhelming the national network with millions of automatic web page requests. The last election seen in Burma was in 1990 when democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi won a landslide victory… which was then ignored by the ruling military dictatorship. —JCL ’ The BBC: ed An ongoing computer attack has knocked Burma off the internet, just days ahead of its first election in 20 years. The attack started in late October but has grown in the last few days to overwhelm the nation’s link to the net, said security firm Arbor Networks. Reports from Burma say the disruption is ongoing. We’ll see : U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ruled out running for president in 2012 or 2016 on Friday, saying the United States should be ready for a woman president but it would not be her. In interviews in New Zealand, the failed 2008 presidential candidate made clear she had no plans to run again despite talk — fueled partly by her fellow Democrats’ losses in Tuesday’s U.S. mid-term elections — she might embark on a new race. Asked by TV3 New Zealand whether she ruled out standing for the top U.S. office through 2016, Clinton, according to a U.S. reporter, replied: “Oh yes, yes. I’m very pleased to be doing what I’m doing as secretary of state.” In a separate interview with TV New Zealand, Clinton said she hoped the United States was ready for a female president, adding “it should be.” Asked if it might be her, she replied: “Well, not me. But it will be someone and it is nice coming to countries that have already proven that they can elect women to the highest governing positions that they have in their systems.” I’m not convinced yet she couldn’t be persuaded to change her mind of some sort of “Draft Hillary” movement cropped up to try and save the Democrats from Obama in 2012. One thing for sure, the boys at Hillbuzz will be really bummed.
