Nokia taking over Symbian development, Foundation responsible for licensing

So it seems the Symbian Foundation isn’t necessarily going away, but it’s transitioning its role in a big, big way. They’re undertaking a “strategic change” that will involve the Foundation moving to a new role where it controls the product’s patent portfolio and licenses the Symbian brand and its research and development activities, but the meat of the operation — the actual platform development — will move over to Nokia beginning the end of March next year. For its part, Nokia says that it’s still “strongly committed” to the platform, it just won’t be the Foundation throwing it together. Interestingly, the Symbian Exposition is this week in Amsterdam, so we suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more about this over the next few days. Is it just us, or is Mr. Elop making his presence felt very, very quickly? For what it’s worth, the Foundation is explaining that a board meeting held just today played a big role in this decision and sudden announcement — though there was a call for media, we received notice of it just minutes before the event. Follow the break for both Symbian’s and Nokia’s press releases. Rove on Pelosi

I think is pretty much what most GOP political analysts think : If Speaker Nancy Pelosi succeeds in becoming minority leader, then House Democrats will get more of the same of what they got on Tuesday night. Pelosi is a damaged, deeply polarizing figure whose retention as House leader will guarantee continued difficulties for those Democrats who had rough races in red districts Tuesday and those Democrats whose seats tilt more red because of redistricting next year. The soon-to-be former speaker will also feed President Obama’s worst instincts. She shares the White House view that Tuesday was the result of inadequate communications, insufficiently liberal initiatives, and not curt enough dismissal of Republicans. These got Democrats into their electoral pickle: Pelosi’s continuation will only make conditions worse in the House. I can’t disagree with any of that. The new more liberal House Dem caucus will fight any effort to moderate their views, and with Pelosi in charge there’s won’t be much of an effort to do anything but save the liberal agenda and block what they can from the GOP.

Chevy Volt: The TreeHugger Test Drive (Photos + Video)

Photos: Brian Merchant The Chevy Volt is one of the ‘Big Two’ — along with the Nissan LEAF , it’s about to become the first electric car primed for the mass market in the United States. Each has its share of devotees: The LEAF is true-blue electric, entirely eschewing gasoline — but that’s a double-edged sword for some; it can to make those less enthusiastic about EVs nervous about running out of charge. Which is… Read the full story on TreeHugger

One BC Resident Proves You Can Make Your Own 50lb, Hybrid Electric Kinetic Photovoltaic Vehicle

Photo: Terry Hope Well, depending on your technical expertise. This highly customized hybrid electric kinetic bike, called the KPV, was built by Terry Hope of British Columbia. The bike/scooter (Hope doesn’t seem sure how to categorize it) is a unique and complicated machine, but in a CNN iReport page , Hope attempts an explanation: Okay I will give a basic rundown… the generator charges the capacitor bank, with a flip of a switch mounted on the handle bars beside the throttle grip. The generated solar powe… Read the full story on TreeHugger

CNN has released their exit polls which include some interesting numbers: 65% either support or are neutral about the Tea Party “movement”, only 31% oppose. The Democrat party’s unfavorables (53%) exceeded the Republican party’s unfavorables (52%). Obama was “not a factor” for only 37%. Gays/Lesbians went 31% for Republicans. Union households went 38% for Republicans. I’ll bet those union numbers are more than a little scary for the Democrats. They look at unions as a monolithic group, almost like blacks, that vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. Not anymore. And you can put gays in that same category. David Freddoso adds some other notes: Two years of Obama-Reid-Pelosi were enough to rehabilitate the philosophy of limited government. 56 percent of this year’s voters felt the government is doing too much, and only 38 percent believed it should do more. Each group voted roughly 80-20 on opposite sides. You can blame the Tea Party for Republicans’ failures in the Senate, but also credit them for successes in the House. Pending late outcomes, so-called “Tea Party” candidates, as defined by the New York Times, made between 30 and 35 of the GOP’s net House gains. Many of these came in places where Republicans have never been competitive — at least not in my lifetime. Some in the GOP have chosen to focus on the Senate failures and ignore the House gains as they discuss the Tea Party’s impact on the election. They do so at great risk of ticking a lot of Tea Party people off and encouraging them to take their business elsewhere.

The True Size of Africa Continued: The Mercator Wars

Image Credit: Data Pointed After the poster that was the subject of Mike’s popular The True Size and Importance of Africa post was published, it sparked a lot of interest in the distortion caused by the Mercator projection. Many in India and Africa consider it to be a Eurocentric, imperialist relic, since it overemphasizes land masses further from the equator. At
