Singapore Airlines changes engines

Singapore Airlines says it will be changing its A380 Rolls Royce engines in the wake of the incident during a Qantas flight. Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced on Wednesday that it plans to switch the engines on three of its Airbus A380 planes as a “precautionary” measure after finding oil stains on them, almost a week after Qantas, its Australian rival, grounded its own A380 fleet due to an engine failure. “Based on further analysis of inspection findings as the investigation into last week’s incident involving another operator’s Airbus A380 is progressing, Singapore Airlines will be carrying out precautionary engine changes on three A380s,” the carrier said in a statement. NEC develops thin, flexible and ‘practical’ Organic Radical Battery

NEC first announced its super-thin Organic Radical Battery (or ORB) technology a full five years ago, but it’s now finally back with what it describes as the first “practical” prototypes of the batteries. While these new batteries are about twice as thick as NEC’s first such units, they’re still only 0.7 mm thin, and are apparently much more reliable while also delivering 1.4 times more output (specifically, a capacity of 5mAh). The key to that boost, it seems, are some newly developed, highly conductive cathodes, which consists of some solid organic radical material that were turned into a gel and then uniformly compounded with carbon materials. What does that mean for actual consumers? Well, if NEC has its way, the batteries could be a thin, flexible power source for things like smart cards, wearable devices, and flexible e-paper displays. Full press release is after the break. San Fran Bans Toys in Some Fast Food Kid Meals

It’s a happy moment for people who see the Happy Meal as anything but. San Francisco has become the first major American city to prohibit fast-food restaurants from including toys with children’s meals that do not meet nutritional guidelines. The city’s Board of Supervisors gave the measure final approval Tuesday on an 8-3 vote. That’s enough votes to survive a planned veto by Mayor Gavin Newsom. Fast Food Restaurants Not Fighting Child Obesity SF Happy Meal Ban: Food Police or Fat Fighter? The ordinance, which would go into effect in December of next year, prohibits toy giveaways in fast-food children’s meals that have more than 640 milligrams of sodium, 600 calories or 35 percent of their…

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) — Indonesia and the United States share principles of unity and tolerance and both can benefit from strengthened ties that will bolster trade and combat terrorism, President Obama said in a highly anticipated speech Wednesday. The address at the University of Indonesia was considered a highlight of Obama’s two-day stop in the southeast Asian nation where he spent four years of his childhood. As the nation with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia was chosen as the site for Obama to further address U.S. relations with the Islamic world following his speech on the topic last year in Cairo, Egypt….

Fear grows as cholera reaches Haiti’s capital

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) – Cholera reached the Haitian capital with 73 recorded cases and a first death raising fears the epidemic could spread through the city's sprawling slums and spiral out of control. “The epidemic of cholera, a highly contagious disease, is no longer a simple emergency, it's now a matter of national security,” the director of the Haiti's health ministry, Gabriel Thimote, told a press conference. Desperate scenes were described in the northern town of Gonaives where some 60 people were said to have died in the past few days, many of them villagers who couldn't make it to hospital as taxis wouldn't take them. “Sick people died on the…
