You just have to love the Dem infighting : The Congressional Black Caucus has decided to withhold its approval for the House Democratic leadership team, denying Speaker Nancy Pelosi full support of the 42-member organization as she campaigns to remain leader. After a nearly two hour long meeting on Monday night, chairwoman Barbara Lee of California said the group only will endorse caucus member James Clyburn of South Carolina for a leadership position. The causus first wants to know what his role will be in the Democratic leadership before backing the full slate. “We fully support our current Whip, Mr. Clyburn, for the number three position and we are currently reserving judgment on the entire package until we see what the actual portfolio entails, in terms of responsibilities,” Lee said. Clyburn was basically given the job of “president of the back of the bus” with this fictional third leadership position . However, this is all kabuki theater on the part of the racist caucus because they’ll all vote for Pelosi no matter what their stated objections.

Bolivia’s Capital City Faces Catastrophic Drought As Lake Titicaca Dries

Photo via y2k_sflam The word “catastrophic” seems like it should be overkill, but when it comes to drought caused by an increase in global temperatures, that’s just what the residents of La Paz, Bolivia’s capital city, will experience as their city turns to desert. Researchers focused on the history of famous Lake Titicaca to surmise that if the globe heats up, the lake will shrink down to levels that not only can’t support agriculture, but will also effect the weather patterns and shrink rainfall levels. The grasslands will turn to de… Read the full story on TreeHugger

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announce Isis national mobile commerce network

Just in time for the total economic collapse of Europe and the rise of the cyber-nomadic tribes, the kids at Discover, Barclaycard, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have a name for their mobile phone-based payment system : Isis. Essentially it remains what we heard from Bloomberg a few months back: a system for using an app on your phone to send payments to a POS system using NFC technology. The Isis team thinks it has “the scope and scale necessary to introduce mobile commerce on a broad basis,” and we wish them the best. But we know how it all ends anyways: with the lucky among us dead, and the rest of us living in caves, hiding from death-dealing robots , and bartering for what we can’t scrounge from the ruins of our once-great cities. PR after the break. Mitch McConnell is the latest convert to the idea of banning earmarks in spending bills : Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) announced Monday that he would join a GOP effort to ban congressional earmarks, a stunning turnaround that reflects a huge victory for the Tea Party movement. A senior member of the Appropriations Committee, McConnell has been one of the Senate’s strongest proponents of local pork, but watched the practice fall into disfavor amid growing public anger over Washington spending that fueled GOP victories in this month’s midterm election. “There is simply no doubt that the abuse of this practice has caused Americans to view it as a symbol of the waste and out-of-control spending that every Republican in Washington is determined to fight,” McConnell said Monday in a speech on the Senate floor. “And unless people like me show the American people that we’re willing to follow through on small or even symbolic things, we risk losing them on our broader efforts to cut spending and rein in government,” he said. Banning earmarks will not necessarily reduce the budget because the funds will still be appropriated in large blocks. What the banning of earmarks does is prevent lawmakers from directing funds to their favorite political cronies and contributors, or to unnecessary projects that benefit their district. Half of West Virginia is named after Robert Byrd because of earmarks. The Airport to Nowhere in Pennsylvania, which has state-of-the-art facilities but only a couple of flights a day to Washington D.C., got there because of earmarks from John Murtha. The voters said to knock it off, and McConnell is wise to listen.
