Toshiba’s newest hard drive is designed for 24/7 rugged use

It doesn’t look like Toshiba’s going to put an end to its awkward hard drive naming convention anytime soon, but at least we can call the new MK1060GSCX the “24/7 durable one.” The 100GB, 2.5-inch SATA HDD is designed for “rugged operating environments” and continuous 24-hour operation. Obviously, Tosh has put this guy through the ringer — it claims that the drive can withstand -15 to +70 degrees Celsius as well as operate at expanded altitudes. The sacrifice you make for that, however, is in speed — the 4,200rpm drive has a 12msec seek time and 1.5Gbit/s interface speed. Of course, if you’re looking for something faster — one of Intel’s latest X25-M SSDs would run circles around that. Toshiba will also offer an even smaller 80GB MK8050GACY version with a PATA interface. No word on pricing, but Toshiba expects the new drives to hit sometime in December — hit the break for the full spec breakdown and press release. There’s just something about the Palins that sets some people off : According to the [criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court], [Steven N. Cowan, 66] and his wife were watching “Dancing with the Stars” when Cowan jumped up and swore as Bristol Palin appeared, saying something about “the (expletive) politics.” Cowan was upset that a political figure’s daughter was on the show when he didn’t think she was a good dancer, the complaint states…. Cowan went upstairs for about 20 minutes and returned, demanding his pistols, which had been taken by his daughter about a month ago for safety reasons. He was carrying a single-shot shotgun, which he loaded and fired into the television… I’m sure there’s a bunch of folks out there who are quite perturbed that Bristol continues to survive on Dancing With the Stars . Without question there’s a group of Sarah Palin fans who are voting each week to keep her on the show because let’s face it, she’s not a great dancer, at least from what little I’ve seen.

Some cars were never meant to by hybrids : A fire at a San Francisco Bay area warehouse where Neil Young stored memorabilia started in a vintage car the singer had converted into a hybrid vehicle in a much publicized project to promote fuel-efficiency, authorities said. Belmont-San Carlos Fire Marshal Jim Palisi told the San Mateo County Times on Monday the Nov. 9 fire began in Young’s 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible and spread to the warehouse. Fire crews were able to save about 70 percent of the 10,000-square-foot building’s contents, including other vintage cars, guitars and framed photos belonging to Young. But the car dubbed the Lincvolt was damaged. No one was injured. Young had converted the car to run on batteries and a biodiesel-powered generator as part of a project to create the world’s most efficient full-size vehicle. The white, 20-foot long, 5,000-pound car’s journey from gas guzzler to hybrid was chronicled on the website lincvolt.com and in a four-part film series. The website also allowed people to track the vehicle’s vital statistics, including its speed, on its various trips. In a statement, Young said workers hope the car’s computer will shed light on what caused it to catch fire. Iowahawk has a theory: Feel-good story of the year: (1) Caterwauling Woodstock hippie dip#### converts ’59 Lincoln Continental to hybrid. (2) ANGRY HOT ROD GODS WREAK FIERY VENGEANCE. I think he’s right.
