Euro, Asia stocks get fillip from Irish bailout

SYDNEY: The euro, Asian stocks and commodities jumped in a relief rally on Monday after global financial authorities agreed to save debt-swamped Ireland and protect Europe’s wider financial stability. An agreement from the EU and the IMF to lend Ireland cash to tackle its banking and budget crisis gave investors a reason to buy back some of the assets sold off earlier this month. But gains were moderate suggesting investors remained cautious, in part because they did not want to risk year-to-date profits, with…

US envoy: N Korea nuclear plant ‘provocative’

Continue reading the main story North Korea: A Secretive State Growing apart Q&A: Inter-Korean crisis The Korean War armistice How to pressure North Korea Evidence of a new North Korean nuclear plant is disappointing and provocative, says the top US envoy on North Korea, Stephen Bosworth. But after talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan, he said the situation was not “a crisis”. A US scientist said he been shown “more than 1,000 centrifuges” for enriching uranium on a visit to North Korea and had seen a new light-water reactor. Enriched uranium can be used for nuclear fuel or made into weapons. “This is obviously a disappointing…

Cam Edwards of NRANews.com reported on Friday night that there's a really under-reported story out there. President Obama nominated a new head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives — a local ATF agent from Chicago that's drawing serious opposition from gun-rights groups. Patrik Jonsson of The Christian Science Monitor is one of the few news reporters to notice: ATF special agent Andrew Traver, who last year let a TV reporter fire an AK-47 from her hip to demonstrate the weapon's lethality, is set to become America's chief firearms inspector. But Mr. Traver, currently the Chicago ATF chief, faces a tough nomination battle as gun-rights groups amass their forces in opposition. read more

Autonomous Audi TTS scales Pikes Peak in 27-minute climb

They said they’d do it , and by golly, it’s been done — a specially-equipped Audi TTS drove the entire 12.42 miles and 156 precarious turns of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb without a driver at the wheel. ( Google , eat your heart out.) While the vehicle technically performed the feat about a month ago in September, Audi decided to wait until this last week to proclaim it to the world, following a helicopter accident during filming that sent pilot Jim Dirker to the hospital. Thankfully, he survived to fly another day, and at least some of the footage pulled through as well; you’ll find a brief clip after the break of the shiny white Quattro autonomously speeding up that hill. Notion Ink Adam gains a flashy website, adds a touchpad to its backside

Rohan Shravan’s Notion Ink Adam may have a ways to go , but his company’s certainly got a beautiful new website, showing off the fabled Tegra 2 tablet with the Pixel Qi screen and fabulous battery life in all its conceptual glory. We’ll be darned if the tablet doesn’t have a new feature, too, in the form of a trackpad on the unit’s back, described as providing “all the functionality and freedom of the main touch surface” when you’re holding the device with a single hand. We’d chide Rohan for the continual feature creep, but as long as he doesn’t venture into Duke Nukem Forever vaporware territory in his quest for perfection, we’re honestly happy to wait. It’s not like we’re running out of half-baked tablets to try these days. Get a peek at the promo website at our source link below. Ireland requests tens of billions in loans from EU

November 21, 2010: 4:23 PM ET (CNN) — Ireland has formally requested substantial “financial assistance” from the European Union to buttress the government and bolster its struggling banking sector, Prime Minister Brian Cowen said Sunday night. The European Union has agreed to accept the request, and negotiations are currently under way to determine the exact loan amount, as well as its terms, according to Cowen. Brian Lenihan, Ireland’s financial minister, said that the country would ask for less than 100 billion euros from the EU and International Monetary Fund. The comments came at a Dublin news conference around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, which followed a meeting of Cowen’s Cabinet. At that…
