Fed lowers outlook for economy through 2011

Updated 9:00 AM Wednesday Nov 24, 2010 Share Email Print WASHINGTON – Federal Reserve officials have become more pessimistic in their economic outlook through next year and have lowered their forecast for growth. The US economy will grow only 2.4 per cent to 2.5 per cent this year, Fed officials said Tuesday in an updated forecast. That’s down sharply from a previous projection of 3 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Next year, the economy will expand by 3 per cent to 3.6 per cent, the Fed said, also much lower than its June forecast. Fed officials project that unemployment won’t change much this year, averaging between 9.5 per cent and 9.7 per cent. The current unemployment rate is 9.6 per cent….

This is just nuts . Can’t we declare victory and leave? KABUL, Afghanistan — For months, the secret talks unfolding between Taliban and Afghan leaders to end the war appeared to be showing promise, if only because of the repeated appearance of a certain insurgent leader at one end of the table: Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, one of the most senior commanders in the Taliban movement. But now, it turns out, Mr. Mansour was apparently not Mr. Mansour at all. In an episode that could have been lifted from a spy novel, United States and Afghan officials now say the Afghan man was an impostor , and high-level discussions conducted with the assistance of NATO appear to have achieved little. “It’s not him,” said a Western diplomat in Kabul intimately involved in the discussions. “And we gave him a lot of money.” American officials confirmed Monday that they had given up hope that the Afghan was Mr. Mansour, or even a member of the Taliban leadership. NATO and Afghan officials said they held three meetings with the man, who traveled from across the border in Pakistan, where Taliban leaders have taken refuge. The fake Taliban leader even met with President Hamid Karzai, having been flown to Kabul on a NATO aircraft and ushered into the presidential palace, officials said. The episode underscores the uncertain and even bizarre nature of the atmosphere in which Afghan and American leaders search for ways to bring the nine-year-old American-led war to an end. The leaders of the Taliban are believed to be hiding in Pakistan, possibly with the assistance of the Pakistani government, which receives billions of dollars in American aid.

WaPo Does It Right This Time: Hires Jennifer Rubin to Cover Conservatives

The Washington Post announced Tuesday that it has hired Commentary Magazine contributing editor Jennifer Rubin to write a blog on the conservative movement and the Republican Party. The move suggests that the Post has learned its lessons from the short run it gave blogger Dave Weigel, who resigned in May after emails surfaced showing him viciously attacking some prominent conservatives. The emails suggested that Weigel was hostile to large segments of the conservative movement, the beat he had been assigned to cover. read more

The new TSA policy is awful and will have ramifications until the Obama administration does something about it. More and more people will be filmed to cause attention to themselves and also the new rules. We know that the right wing will exploit this as much as they can. If a Republican was in the Oval office they would be doing and saying the exact opposite. They’d give up their dignity in a second to prove that Conservatives are the only real Americans and care more about our safety than the left, but implementing a bad, bad policy only makes things easier for them and causes videos like this to explode on Drudge. Duncan: …it really should be obvious to our overlords that taking pictures of and fondling peoples’ genitals aren’t really acceptable security measures. Is that so hard to understand?

O’Reilly attacks ‘Simpsons’ as ‘pinheads’ after Fox ‘#1 with racists’ jibe

Click here to view this media Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly got his revenge on The Simpsons Monday but didn’t deny the charge that his network is popular with racists. On Sunday’s episode of the long-running cartoon series, a Fox News helicopter carrying a network executive reads, “Fox News: Not Racists, But #1 With Racists.” After the Fox News executive steps out of the helicopter into the head of the Statue of Liberty, the aircraft goes into a tailspin and crashes. The pilot can be heard saying, “It’s not fair, we’re unbalanced.” The executive conducts a secret meeting where his team plans a new health care scare that will send their ratings through the roof. Gawker called The Simpsons episode one of the most anti-Republican ever. The Simpsons is aired by the Fox broadcast network. Newscorp owns the Fox broadcast network as well as Fox News Channel. “Continuing to bite the hand that feeds part of it, Fox broadcasting once again allows its cartoon characters to run wild,” O’Reilly complained on his Monday show. “Pinheads? I believe so,” O’Reilly concluded.
