Russian jet crash-lands, two dead

MOSCOW – Two engines failed on a Russian passenger jet shortly after takeoff Saturday, and the plane made an emergency landing as its third engine cut out, skidding off the snowy runway and breaking apart, officials said. Two people were killed and 83 injured. The plane, a Tupolev Tu-154 belonging to Dagestan Airlines, was carrying at least 155 people when it landed at Domodedovo Airport, federal aviation agency spokesman Sergei Izvolsky said. The cause of the engine failure was unclear, he said, but recent crashes involving the aging Tu-154 aircraft have prompted the Russian carrier Aeroflot to stop using it. Officials said 155 people were aboard the Dagestan Airlines plane, but the…

On her radio show Wednesday, Randi Rhodes insisted that conservatives are not constitutionalists. They know nothing about the Constitution, she asserted. She oddly claimed that there's “nothing about politics” in the Constitution, so resisting new spending because it makes you popular is apparently quite unconstitutional behavior: And they don't give a rat's ass if you are suffering through Christmas, or if your 9-year-old is suffering through Christmas, or your 3-year-old is crying…or your 6-year-old is hungry…they just don't give a rat's ass! This is all politics, and frankly, there is nothing about politics in the Constitution, nothing! No parties, no politics! Conservatives, according to Rhodes, also don't believe in the First Amendment: “So they don't believe in freedom of the press, and they don't believe that there is a separation of church and state, and they don't believe in free speech obviously because they think speech is money and of course, money is not free.” read more

A Spanish Woman Owns the Sun. Now A Religious Group Owns Yoga?

This doesn’t help yoga’s street cred, but nor would inaccurate claims. Photo: istolethetv /Flickr It seems these days a lot of grown-ups are forgetting that wonderful lesson we learn as kiddos in pre-K called sharing. First we had a woman in Spain who filed paperwork claiming ownership of the sun . Now, as reported in The New York Times , we have the

ComScore: Android keeps chugging, BlackBerry falters, world awaits Windows Phone 7′s numbers

Compared to last month’s report , it’s more or less business as usual in ComScore’s latest smartphone market share numbers for the three-month period ending in October, but there are a few interesting points worth calling out. Most notably, RIM’s decline seems to have accelerated — they’ve lost a claimed 3.5 percent of the US market in the latest period compared to 2.8 percent prior, which means they’re now down to 35.8 percent. Of course, that’s still more than enough to keep them comfortably in first place, but it’s a situation they’re going to want to reverse sooner or later — hopefully with TAT’s help . Meanwhile, Apple’s tacked on a slightly larger slice of the pie, but they’re still holding fairly steady; Google, meanwhile, continues its stratospheric rise, tacking on another 2.1 percent since last month’s numbers to hit 23.5 percent — nipping on Apple’s heels, we’d say. The most intriguing story, though, would have to be Microsoft: they’re lower than before at just 9.7 percent of the market, but these figures don’t include Windows Phone 7 yet — and clearly, no one’s buying WinMo 6.5 gear at this point. Should start to get interesting in the next month or two on that front. Rachel Maddow on Ronald Reagan’s Failed Trickle-Down Voodoo Economics

Rachel Maddow did an absolutely wonderful job dismantling the Republican talking points that Ronald Reagan’s “Voodoo Economics” or “trickle-down economics” worked, pointing out how the Republicans who keep coming on the air claiming that tax cuts for the rich benefit the “job creators” are full of a bunch of bullpucky. The people who end up primarily benefiting from these tax cuts are the rich, who as Rachel showed in the footage from when Reagan’s tax cuts first passed, spend more on luxury items they don’t even need, while the rest of us get to feel those economic benefits trickling down our heads in the form of something besides water. Now if we just had every pundit making things this clear to the American public instead of allowing the Republicans to come on the air and lie about “job creators” being taxed day… after day… after day… maybe… just maybe we’d have a less misinformed public. Sadly this segment on Rachel’s show isn’t required viewing for every citizen in the United States. Her charts and graphs about what’s happened to the incomes of the rich and the poor sadly are ones that we’re not seeing on any other broadcast as well. Pass this one on to your friends and neighbors. We need to be letting every member of Congress and President Obama know it’s not acceptable to see these tax cuts for the rich allowed to be extended at the expense of bankrupting our country or attempting to balance our budget on the backs of the working class and the poor. Kudos to Rachel for laying out the lies about tax cuts trickling down to the rest of us so plainly. UPDATE: Compare and contrast that to lying hack Pat Buchanan who appeared with “Democratic strategist” Peter Fenn on MSNBC today after the first two votes for a partial extension of the tax cuts failed. The House Finally Passes The Child Nutrition Act

Photo: Ben+Sam Not a moment too soon the House passed The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act just two days ago after it passed the Senate in August. This is long overdo as far as I’m concerned and just before the holiday season, it puts school nutrition and our kids on the front burner again. That’s not to say that disconcerting compromises didn’t make for a less than perfect bill, but getting
