Electric car sales watch: 281 Volts and 67 Leafs sold in US during February

Neither Chevrolet nor Nissan have felt proud enough of their EV sales numbers to list them on their latest press releases, but our colleagues over at Autoblog Green have dug those numbers up anyhow. They make for dispiriting reading if you’re an electric car well-wisher, as the Volt ‘s sales declined from January’s tally of 321 to an even less impressive 281, while the Leaf closed February with only 67 US sales, down 20 on last month. Upon seeing their previous numbers, we postulated that both cars are suffering from constrained supply, which is likely still the case, but it feels ironic to us that electric vehicles, whose driving experience offers instant torque, are taking their sweet time to rev up their sales. Georgia Tech Oliver will return for ACC Tournament Brian Oliver, who has missed the past seven games, is scheduled to return for the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, according to Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt . Oliver, a sophomore, suffered a small fracture in the base of the thumb on his non-shooting hand in the loss against Clemson on Feb. 5. Doctors removed the pins from his hand Friday morning. The Yellow Jackets will host Miami on Sunday in the last game at Alexander Memorial Coliseu m. The building will be torn down and replaced by the $45-million McCamish Pavilion . Oliver, who started 12 games, is averaging 10.9 points and 4.5 rebounds this season. After hitting 38 percent of his 3-pointers last season Oliver has struggled this year, hitting 29.5 percent of his 3-pointers and 36.8 percent of his shots overall. Andrew Luster

Andrew Luster : The Convicted Max Factor Heir – Where is He Now? It is a classic tale of the ‘poor little rich kid.’ Andrew Luster was born to riches, and was heir to a massive fortune. But the great grandson of cosmetic titan Max Factor threw it all away, thanks to his horrible crimes. He grew up in Malibu and reportedly had a trust fund of over three million dollars that supported his traveling, trips and his passion for surfing. He had everything, except morals. In 1996, 1997 and 2000 he reportedly drugged three different women with the date rape drug GHB, he that – while they were unconscious – raped them. He was caught and while on trial he escaped and left the country. He was a fugitive. The trial went on – in absentia – and he was found guilty of a stunning 86 or the 87 counts against him. He settled in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where he was living it up and hitting the waves. But while the TV cameras were rolling, Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman – the reality show bounty hunter caught him. Where is he now? He is serving a 124-year prison sentence at the Mule Creek State Prison in California. He won’t be eligible for parole until he serves 85% of his sentence, which would make it 2108. This means he will be spending the rest of his life in prison. His victims? Two of them won civil suites and were awarded $39 million, but the money is still being determined to how much they’ll actually get. And there are two other – much younger victims – his two children with his ex-girlfriend who are now seven and nine. There was a made for TV movie made of his tale called, ” A Date With Darkness: The Trial and Capture of Andrew Luster ,” showing all the tragedy. Writen by SunnyChanel Source : Babble

Tractor Beam

Researchers Design a Tractor Beam Powered By Lasers There’s no escaping it: Though the tractor beam is a staple of sci-fi space-faring scenarios, it’s also extremely counter-intuitive. How does one pull something in via an outward-shooting beam? A few Chinese researchers think they’ve found the answer via a theoretical method that should generate a backward-pulling force from a forward-traveling stream of photons. ( Read Tractor Beam more… ) Scientists Work To Create Laser ‘Tractor Beam’ The tractor beam — a tool popularized in the realm of science fiction — has been slowly making its way into the realm of reality, where beams of light are used to pull objects back toward the source of the light, BBC News reports. In a paper published online, researchers from Hong Kong and China have analyzed and calculated the conditions required to create a tractor beam, or in reality, a laser-based “pull.” Unlike the ones popularized in science fiction — most notably Star Trek — the approach would only work over very small distances. ( Read Tractor Beam more… ) How To Turn A Laser Into A Tractor Beam Physicists work out how to generate a backward pulling force from a forward propagating beam A photon has a small momentum which it can impart to anything it hits, as Arthur Compton and Peter Lebedev discovered at the beginning of the last century. We now know that photons can be used to push anything from electrons to solar sails. Today, Jun Chen from Fudan University in China and a few pals demonstrate the counterintuitive result that photons can pull things too. In other words, they’ve worked out how to generate a backward pulling force from a forward propagating beam. ( Read Tractor Beam more… ) Researchers figure out how to make a tractor beam Researchers at the Fudan University of China believe they have worked out the theory behind creating a tractor beam from a laser. Such a thing is difficult to imagine outside of science fiction, and of course Star Wars and Star Trek, as it involves getting a pulling force generated from a “forward propagating beam”. ( Read Tractor Beam more… ) Trek-like tractor beam is possible In Star Trek, the starship Enterprise often dragged objects towards it with its glowing tractor beam. Now there’s a way to do this in real life – at least for very small particles. When light falls on an opaque object, the surface reflects most of the photons back in the direction they came from. What’s less obvious is that these bouncing photons push back on the object, causing it to move away from the light source. If the object is very small, this push can be significant. But this is the exact opposite of the suction-like behaviour of tractor beams in science fiction. Motorola will upgrade your Xoom to 4G LTE — even if you’ve rooted it

Happy news for Android tinkerers everywhere — Motorola has officially confirmed it will attempt to perform its 4G upgrade on all Verizon Wireless-riding Xoom tablets it receives from users, whether they’ve been rooted, repainted, or accessorized with fluffy dice. Naturally, the company can’t guarantee successful software updates on devices that have had their OS tweaked, so it asks users to be kind and rewind to the original firmware state. For those unwilling to stretch that far back, Moto will still give it a shot and says that it’ll install the 4G LTE modem at a minimum. What a refreshingly open-minded attitude. Now if Moto could give us an open-minded bootloader on its phones as well, we’d be all set.
