Think Hurricane Irene was overhyped ? Well, it looks like it’ll wind up being one of the 10 costliest disasters in US history, analysts tell the New York Times —and a lot of the damage won’t be covered by insurance. Industry estimates peg the storm’s costs at between $7 billion…

You have to admire the pluck of Christine O’Donnell If nothing else, the girl has spunk. Most people would just wilt under the withering criticism that gets directed at her but she just picks herself up and keeps right on going. Sort of the Energizer Bunny of politics, or infotainment personality or whatever hell category she fits into. Take this week: Though she’s been on all the major cable news networks (CNN, O’Reilly, etc), morning shows, national radio and the like promoting her fictional account of last year’s Senate race in Delaware she’s managed to sell only 2000 copies so far of her opus, Troublemaker . A recent book signing in conservative bastion Naples, Florida had only five people bother to attend. O’Donnell took the turnout of five people — members of the media outnumbered customers — at Barnes & Noble in stride. “God bless you, Tom,” she told Tom Bruzzesi of Fort Myers, who said he’s launching his own presidential campaign. “I like her,” Bruzzesi said. “She’s kind of a rogue like me.” “Thank you for coming out today,” O’Donnell said to Louise Campo of Naples. “She interests me. She’s very conservative,” Campo said. O’Donnell, a Christian, then politely turned down a request from a young man who asked her to sign his book on demonology instead of a copy of her book . And now we hear today that Christine’s appearance with Sarah Palin at a tea party rally in Indianola, Iowa has been cancelled . Apparently teabaggers objected to witches attending. From the Wall Street Journal blog : “I made a mistake,” said Ken Crow, president of Tea Party of America. “I assumed there was an open slot and there wasn’t.” Monday night, Mr. Crow told Washington Wire that Ms. O’Donnell would appear. Tea Party of America’s co-founder, Charlie Gruschow, said the group withdrew Ms. O’Donnell’s after receiving numerous “emails from a lot of tea party folks that were very disappointed that she would be speaking.” “We decided not to have her speak,” Mr. Gruschow said. “We felt it was in the best interest of the movement.” Ms. O’Donnell’s spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment. But O’Donnell did take to Twitter to express her disappointment : @ChristineOD I was honored to be asked to speak at the Iowa rally this weekend and accepted. Changed my flight to make it work… Then quickly deleted the tweet/whine. UPDATE: O’Donnell will be speaking at the tea party powwow in Iowa this weekend after all, reports CNN late Tuesday. Cue witchcraft jokes. UPDATE 2: Now they’ve invited her again , after the bad publicity. After news spread across the Internet that O’Donnell had been dumped by the same tea party movement that catapulted her to victory last September over Rep. Mike Castle in the GOP Delaware Senate primary, tea party leaders had a change of heart and re-invited O’Donnell. “We’re making room for her,” Crow told The News Journal late Tuesday. “We welcome her and look forward to hearing her speech.” In a statement, O’Donnell said she has “humbly re-accepted their re-invitation.” … “We’re grass-roots people,” said Crow, a retired west Texas rodeo cowboy. “We’re not professional political operatives.”

Americans can be forgiven for assuming Michele Bachmann was deadly serious when she repeatedly joked this weekend that God was using an earthquake and hurricane to send a divine message to restrain federal spending. After all, Bachmann has not only proclaimed time and again that the Almighty called her to seek higher office ; in 2009, she joined an evangelical “prayercast” asking for divine intervention to halt health care reform. As it turns out, she has plenty of company among the Republican 2012 White House hopefuls. When it comes to policy foreign and domestic, from frontrunner Rick Perry on down the GOP field is offering the ultimate faith-based initiative. For years, the leading lights of the Party of Lincoln have been turning Honest Abe’s mantra (“My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side”) on its head. But when it comes to making divine intervention the centerpiece of public policy, Texas Governor Rick Perry is hoping to be the chosen one. Before entering the GOP presidential race, Governor Perry tried in vain to end the drought in Texas by proclaiming “the three-day period from Friday, April 22, 2011, to Sunday, April 24, 2011, as Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas” and urged “Texans of all faiths and traditions to offer prayers on those days for the healing of our land, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of our normal way of life.” But while God didn’t hear Perry’s call, Perry heard His . As he explained last month before formally jumping into the GOP race: “I’m not ready to tell you that I’m ready to announce that I’m in. But I’m getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do. This is what America needs.” If the Lord is calling on Rick Perry to lead the United States, Perry plans to call Him back when it’s time to actually run it. On August 6th in Houston, Governor Perry tunnelled under the wall separating church and state to lead The Response , an evangelical day of prayer and fasting seeking divine intervention for America. As Perry put it: “I sincerely hope you’ll join me in Houston on August 6th and take your place in Reliant Stadium with praying people asking God’s forgiveness, wisdom and provision for our state and nation. There is hope for America. It lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees.” As Perry later explained, the solutions to America’s woes are above his pay grade : “I think it’s time for us to just hand it over to God and say, ‘God, You’re going to have to fix this.’” By “this,” Perry meant “financial debt, terrorism and a multitude of natural disasters.” And as he made clear during the August 6 gathering, God’s invisible hand was needed to calm a jittery stock market. As Politico reported: “Father, our heart breaks for America,” Perry said, leading the crowd at Reliant Stadium in prayer. “We see discord at home, we see fear in the marketplace, we see anger in the halls of government. And as a nation, we have forgotten who made us, who protects us, who blesses us.” To which Michele Bachmann would doubtless reply, “Amen.” Long before Rick Perry started to sap her support among evangelical voters, the Congresswoman from Minnesota made clear understood their language ( if not American history ). The self-proclaimed ” fool for Christ ,” who in 2006 warned that ” we are in the End of Days ” and counseled “wives, you are to be submissive to your husbands,” has been also called on by God. As it turns out, more than once . In 2006, Bachmann announced that “God then called me to run for the United States Congress.” But after explaining that she needed “inner assurance” from the Lord before taking the presidential plunge, Bachmann confirmed to Iowa Public Television that she had received it from Him. “Well, every decision that I make I pray about as does my husband and I can tell you, yes, I’ve had that calling.” And Bachmann, who asked “that the Lord will give us a special anointing on how to put our team together,” has in turn called on Him to smite her political opponents. In December 2009, Bachmann joined an evangelical “prayercast” asking God to stop health care reform . “We deserve Your wrath,” Bachmann prayed and asked, “but would You yet give our nation mercy?” And in 2010, Bachmann proclaimed her vengeful God would really get his wrath on if the United States did not support Likud policy in Israel : At a Republican Jewish Coalition event in Los Angeles last week, Rep. Michele Bachmann offered a candid view of her positions on Israel: Support for Israel is handed down by God and if the United States pulls back its support, America will cease to exist… “I am convinced in my heart and in my mind that if the United States fails to stand with Israel, that is the end of the United States…[W]e have to show that we are inextricably entwined, that as a nation we have been blessed because of our relationship with Israel, and if we reject Israel, then there is a curse that comes into play. And my husband and I are both Christians, and we believe very strongly the verse from Genesis [Genesis 12:3], we believe very strongly that nations also receive blessings as they bless Israel.” Of course, Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann have a lot of company among the Republican contenders claiming that God is in their amen corner. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum , who famously warned against the prospect of ” man-on-dog ” marriages, blamed liberal Boston for clergy sex abuse there and declared the American Left ” hates Christendom ,” explained that his 2012 presidential run is “about going on to the battlefield and defending God’s truth in the World.” He knows this, because God told him so : “It really boils down to God’s will. What is it that God wants? … We have prayed a lot about this decision, and we believe with all our hearts that this is what God wants.” Ditto for former pizza mogul Herman Cain . Cain, who would require special loyalty oaths for Muslim government officials and supports local bans on mosques , told a Tea Party event in April that the Lord wanted him to go from the pizza over into the fire: Cain told the crowd about his battle with cancer in 2006, saying he’s been “totally cancer free” for the past five years. “You want to know why? God said, ‘Not yet Herman,’” Cain told the crowd. “God said, ‘Not yet. I’ve got something else for you to do.’ And it might be to become the president of the United States of America.” While Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin have been no-shows for the 2012 race, they too pass the God Pledge twin tests with flying colors. While God apparently didn’t call Huckabee’s number for 2012, last time around the Arkansas Governor explained his early success by citing “the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of 5,000 people and that’s the only way that our campaign could be doing what it’s doing.” The hand of God wasn’t merely behind his strong performance in the 2008 primaries, Minister Huckabee insisted, but was responsible for other victories, too. As the Virginia Pilot recounted two years ago, the Almighty had helped the GOP battle Teh Gay: “The notion that we are just one of many among equals is nonsense,” Huckabee said. The United States is a “blessed” nation, he said, calling American revolutionaries’ defeat of the British empire “a miracle from God’s hand.” The same kind of miracle, he said, led California voters to approve Proposition 8, which overturned a state law legalizing same-sex marriages. Voters “did it because some things are right and some things are wrong and they had to make a stand.” As for the half-term Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin explained to the February 2010 Tea Party Convention that: “It would be wise of us to start seeking some divine intervention again in this country, so that we can be safe and secure and prosperous again.” And Palin, who asked Alaskans to pray for a natural gas pipeline, called the Iraq war “a task that is from God” and declared that her selection as John McCain’s running mate was ” God’s plan ,” believed that despite grim polling numbers He would be with her on Election Day 2008 : “To me, it motivates us, makes us work that much harder. And it also strengthens my faith, because I’m going to know, at the end of the day, putting this in God’s hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4. So I’m not discouraged at all.” God, it seems, wanted Barack Obama in the White House. For conservatives, the disappointments and ironies from Above were once again on display during the Hurricane Irene weekend just concluded. While New York Times columnist Ross Douthat chastised the religious right’s liberal critics for their renewed warnings about “American Theocracy,” his boss and editor Bill Keller suggested that the press needs to be “asking candidates tougher questions about faith.” Just days before the 2007 Iowa straw poll victor Michele Bachmann joked about the message from God contained in the earthquake that rocked the east coast, Pat Robertson made a similar point in all earnestness. As the 1987 GOP Iowa straw poll winner put it: “Ladies and gentlemen I don’t want to get weird on this so please take it for what it’s worth. But it seems to me the Washington Monument is a symbol of America’s power, it has been the symbol of our great nation, we look at that monument and say this is one nation under God. Now there’s a crack in it, there’s a crack in it and it’s closed up. Is that a sign from the Lord? Is that something that has significance or is it just result of an earthquake? You judge, but I just want to bring that to your attention. It seems to me symbolic. When Jesus was crucified and when he died the curtain in the Temple was rent from top to bottom and there was a tear and it was extremely symbolic, is this symbolic? You judge.” As the right-wing Daily Caller reported, one jihadist web site seemed to agree with Robertson’s assessment, calling the Northeast tremors “”Allah’s punishment on Americans”: “Allah has struck New York and the capital city Washington by an earthquake as a punishment for their disbelief… “If they don’t listen and don’t stop, Allah will strike them again by an earthquake or a hurricane. You have no other way but to repent and move away from your path that will take you to the abyss.” Meanwhile, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and most of the Republican presidential wannabes have yet to release the details of their plans to expand the economy, create jobs or just about anything else. But for all intents and purposes, the message at the heart of the 2012 Republican platform is already finished. Pray harder. (This piece also appears at Perrspectives .)

Dick Cheney autobiography heaps praise on Tony Blair

Dick Cheney, vice-president to George W Bush, pays tribute to ‘one of America’s closest and best allies in the war on terror’ He may or may not welcome it, but Tony Blair has had lavish praise heaped on him by the uber-conservative of US politics, Dick Cheney. In his autobiography published on Tuesday, the self-declared Darth Vader of the Bush administration pays tribute to the former Labour leader. Not only was Blair America’s greatest ally during the Bush years, says Cheney, but his speeches about the “war on terror” were some of the most eloquent he had been privileged to hear. George Bush’s friendship and closeness to Blair have been well documented, but the position of his vice-president, who earned a reputation for secretiveness while at the White House, has been less clear until now. In the 565-page In My Time, Cheney is unrepentant about the most controversial decisions taken by the White House, from the waterboarding of Guantánamo Bay detainees to the invasion of Iraq. Recalling a trip to Europe in March 2002, a year before the invasion of Iraq, Cheney says: “I began my trip with a stop in London to visit one of America’s closest and best allies in the war on terror, British prime minister Tony Blair. I have tremendous respect for Prime Minister Blair,” Cheney writes. “He is a Labour party liberal and I am a conservative Republican, and we didn’t always agree on strategy or tactics. But America had no greater ally during our time in office. His speeches about the war were some of the most eloquent I’ve been privileged to hear.” Meeting at Downing Street, Cheney, an early advocate of invading Iraq, said a decision had not yet been made, but invasion was on his mind: “The president wanted to be absolutely clear that if he decided to go to war, we would finish the job. We would remove Saddam Hussein, eliminate the threat he posed and establish a representative government.” The vice-president even made phone calls to lobby Tory MPs on Blair’s behalf. On the eve of the crucial Commons vote in 2003 that authorised the war in Iraq, he writes: “At the request of the British, I

Must See HDTV (August 29th – September 4th)

We’re still in a holding pattern waiting for the NFL regular season to start and fall TV shows to premiere but luckily college football is here to save the day. It’s not alone though, check out our highlighted picks of the week right here, followed after the break by our weekly listings of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. College Football While the pros — a distinction that is getting fuzzier and fuzzier *cough* Miami *cough* — get ready for their season to start college football teams will be getting back to it this weekend. UNLV and Wisconsin have the first high profile matchup of the year on ESPN (and ESPN 3D) Thursday night while Oregon and LSU play Saturday in a game that could have National Championship implications right away. We’ll include some of the high profile national matchups on our schedule, but you can click here to find out where every nationally broadcast game will be on throughout the season — we know how tough tracking Middle Tennessee can be. The Hour BBC America will air the third of six episodes of this drama on Wednesday night as it takes us behind the scenes of a 1950s TV news show featuring The Wire’s Dominic West. While it’s a period piece with plenty of sex, sexism and whiskey if you’re looking for a Mad Men clone you’ll likely be disappointed. The short story arc doesn’t build Don Draper-like lead characters, but the Suez Crisis , spies and a suspicious death form a strong enough backdrop for us to sink our death into. If you’re a fan of British TV we’d rate this one below the excellent Luther , but well above Law & Order: UK — check out a trailer after the break. (August 31, BBC America, 10 PM) Madden NFL 12 It’s that time of year again, when Madden comes out and we resort to couch based battles of supremacy for bragging rights and more. As usual, not that much has changed from year to year, but there are updates including a new collision system that promises to improve tackling, custom playbooks and new camera angles cribbed from NFL Films archives. After generally positive reviews — it snagged a 3.5-star rating from our friends at Joystiq — we won’t stop you from laying down $60 one more time for EA’s annual refresh. Bank Of America Sells Half Of Stake In Chinese Bank In Preparation For New Regulations

NEW YORK — Bank of America Corp. is selling half of its stake in China Construction Bank Corp. to raise cash and shore up its capital base. The nation’s largest bank by assets said Monday it will sell 13.1 billion shares in the Chinese bank for $8.3 billion to a group of investors it declined to name. The sale, which had been expected, will generate a gain of $3.3 billion for Bank of America. The news came four days after the Charlotte, N.C. bank got a $5 billion investment from Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which provided a big boost to Bank of America’s battered stock. The billionaire investor made investments in other major companies such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc., helping restore confidence in them when they were out of favor. Bank of America rose 40 cents, or 5.2 percent, to $8.16 Monday after news of the sale came out. The stock closed at $6.30 last Tuesday, two days before Berkshire announced its investment. After the sale, Bank of America will still own about 5 percent of China Construction Bank. It currently owns about 10 percent. The sale is the bank’s latest move to increase its capital base to comply with new international regulations created following the global meltdown. The rules require big financial institutions to hold more cash. Finance Chief Bruce Thompson says the bank raised about $5.8 billion in August. That comes on top of cash and cash-equivalent securities of $402 billion at the end of second quarter. The bank has faced many problems stemming from its 2008 purchase of the nation’s largest mortgage lender, Countrywide Financial Corp., as well as other issues. Bank of America has lost $15.3 billion in the last four quarters. Its revenue fell 34 percent in the first half of 2011 compared with last year after new regulations cut into the fees it collects from checking account overdrafts and credit cards. Half of all U.S. households have an account or do business with Bank of America, making it more exposed than its rivals to weakness in the economy. On Aug. 8, American International Group Inc. sued the bank for more than $10 billion, claiming Bank of America deceived the insurer by selling it faulty mortgage investments. Bank of America has already paid a total of $12.7 billion this year to settle similar claims, but that suit increased worries that more investors would sue and further drain the bank’s cash reserves.

From the Democracy for America email: On Friday, we asked DFA members to vote on which Republican to target next with our new TV ad exposing the Republican attacks on Medicare, Social Security and education. It was close, but the winner was clear: Republican Eric Cantor. Now, we’ll hit him hard across his Virginia district before he heads back to Washington after Labor Day. You told us what to do. Please help make it possible by contributing $5 to get the ad on the air. The link goes to ActBlue. It would be fantastic to have this ad flood Cantor’s district, reminding voters of the costs of supporting the Republican agenda. In fact, while Labor Day is a great start, I hope DFA runs this ad again and again as we near the election.

Martin Luther King’s Daughter: ‘Lincoln Remembered for Signing the Declaration of Independence’

At a ceremony to honor the opening of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in our nation's capital Friday, the late civil rights leader's daughter Bernice made an historical error that would evoke tremendous ridicule and derision if she was a conservative. “Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence” (video follows with transcript and commentary): BERNICE KING: But as I close, I close with the recognition that daddy is standing, Lincoln is seated. Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence. Daddy being remembered as standing up for truth and standing up for justice and standing up for righteousness and standing up for peace and standing up for freedom. Daddy is now standing on the National Mall in our nation’s capital. Readers are strongly advised that I mean no disrespect whatsoever to Ms. King or her father. People when speaking in front of the public – especially without teleprompters – make innocent mistakes all the time. We know Ms. King is fully aware that Lincoln didn't sign the Declaration of Independence. Toward the end of an eight-minute speech to her father's former fraternity Friday, she erred. People do it all the time. Likely – and frankly, rightly! – you haven't heard anything about this. But would that be the case if this was an event for former President Ronald Reagan for example, and his daughter Patti Davis made such a mistake? Imagine former Alaska governor Sarah Palin or Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann saying such a thing. This would have likely made headlines and been featured on all the nightly news programs. That's what happened when Bachmann recenty mistook the day Elvis Presley died for his birthday. A Google search of “Bachmann Elvis Presley” produced over 7 million results, and that's just a flub concerning a dead rock star. This is a mistake concerning the Declaration of Independence and one of America's greatest presidents.
