Nothing gets my blood boiling faster than listening to the Sunday talking heads bloviate about how all those old people don’t really need their Medicare anyway. Eric Cantor just couldn’t wait to call Medicaid and Medicare recipients welfare queens this morning — as if they don’t pay for it with the taxes THEY pay (unlike our corporate person counterparts), while extolling Ryan’s plan to gut health services to the entire nation. Really, his message (and Ryan’s) is this: If you’re under 55, die and die quickly so there’s more for us. Here’s the clip: CANTOR: We are in a situation where we have a safety net in place in this country for people who frankly don’t need one. We have to focus on making sure we have a safety net for those who need it. WALLACE: The Medicaid people — you’re going to cut that by $750 billion. CANTOR: The medicaid reductions are off the baseline. so what we’re saying is allow states to have the flexibility to deal with their populations, their indigent populations and the healthcare needs the way they know how to deal with them. Not to impose some mandate from a bureaucrat in washington. WALLACE: But you are giving them less money to do it. CANTOR: In terms of the baseline, that is correct…What we’re saying is there is so much imposition of a mandate that doesn’t relate to the actual quality of care. We believe if you put in place the mechanism that allow for personal choice as far as Medicare is concerned, as well as the programs in Medicaid, that we can actually get to a better resolve and do what most Americans are learning how to do, which is to do more with less. Here’s my response to Mr. Cantor. I would like for him to start doing more with less by immediately terminating his Federal Employees’ Health Benefit Plan and shopping for his own health insurance. Then I would like him to imagine himself in a scenario where an aged relative comes to him needing a home and financial assistance because their health is so fragile they can no longer care for themselves. He will be faced with the reality of having to find a qualified home health care provider at his own expense because said indigent relative does not really “need” Medicaid, since they have Uncle Eric to rely upon. All of the expenses will be out of his own pocket. But hey, he’ll definitely learn how to do more with less. Does Cantor not realize that more than half of Medicaid benefits go toward long term care for the elderly? Or maybe he does, and so the message is to die, and die quickly? Anyone within the reach of my keyboard already knows the Ryan plan is a big pile of nonsense. Unless, of course, they’re political opinion-makers with a wide platform. Then it’s “courageous.” And very, very “serious.” Again I ask, what are they smoking? How is it courageous to send us all back to the land of pre-existing conditions exclusions? How is it courageous to end Medicare and send THEM back into the markets for health insurance they won’t be able to afford? How is it courageous to tell poor people it’s perfectly all right for them to die in the streets, because the private ambulance and cremation market is there to pick up and dispose of their remains? Of course it’s not courageous. It’s also not serious, but now that every damn corporate media outlet on the planet has decided to use press releases instead of their own brains, it’s become courageous and serious. No. Paul Krugman is right on this one : In short, this plan isn’t remotely serious; on the contrary, it’s ludicrous. And it’s also cruel. In the past, Mr. Ryan has talked a good game about taking care of those in need. But as the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities points out, of the $4 trillion in spending cuts he proposes over the next decade, two-thirds involve cutting programs that mainly serve low-income Americans. And by repealing last year’s health reform, without any replacement, the plan would also deprive an estimated 34 million nonelderly Americans of health insurance. So the pundits who praised this proposal when it was released were punked. The G.O.P. budget plan isn’t a good-faith effort to put America’s fiscal house in order; it’s voodoo economics, with an extra dose of fantasy, and a large helping of mean-spiritedness.   No one exemplifies mean-spiritedness better than the young Eric Cantor, sneering at his elders while he lobbies for another wealth shift from the poor and middle class to the rich fat cats laying down those insurance premium rate hikes. Where’s Granny when you need her? All those tea party grannies ought to be beating this little schmuck over the head with their misspelled signs. Oh, wait. They’re not affected. It’s only those of us who have worked all our lives so Granny could have her Medicare that would lose the right to it. If you’re under age 55 and aren’t screaming about this, start. Single payer is now fully on the table.

Sidney Lumet Dead: Director Passes at 86

Legendary director Sidney Lumet has died at the age of 86. The New York Times reported early Saturday that Lumet, a four time Oscar nominee, died of lymphoma. Lumet, who began his career directing theater and then television, helmed countless big screen classics. His first film, “12 Angry Men,” established him as a top director in 1957, while his 1970′s hits “Serpico,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Network” sealed his reputation as a screen legend. While he never won an Oscar for films he directed, in 2005 he was awarded an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Lumet worked with Hollywood’s biggest names, including Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Henry Fonda, Al Pacino, Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Robert Duvall, and Faye Dunaway. AP: NEW YORK – Sidney Lumet, the award-winning director of such acclaimed films as “Network,” “Serpico,” “Dog Day Afternoon” and “12 Angry Men,” has died. He was 86. Lumet’s death was confirmed Saturday by Marc Kusnetz, who is the husband of Lumet’s stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel. He said Lumet died during the night and had suffered from lymphoma. A Philadelphia native, Lumet moved to New York City as a child, and it became the location of choice for more than 30 of his films. Although he freely admitted to a lifelong love affair with the city, he often showed its grittier side. Such dramas as “Prince of the City,” “Q&A,” “Night Falls on Manhattan” and “Serpico” looked at the hard lives and corruptibility of New York police officers. “Dog Day Afternoon” told the true-life story of two social misfits who set in motion a chain of disastrous events when they tried to rob a New York City bank on an oppressively hot summer afternoon. “It’s not an anti-L.A. thing,” Lumet said of his New York favoritism in a 1997 interview. “I just don’t like to live in a company town.” Although he didn’t work in Los Angeles, the director maintained good relations with the Hollywood studios, partly because he finished his pictures under schedule and budget. His television beginnings had schooled him in working fast, and he rarely shot more than four takes of a scene. He was nominated four times for directing Academy Awards, and although he never won, Lumet did receive an honorary Oscar in 2005 for lifetime achievement. He also received the Directors Guild of America’s prestigious D.W. Griffith Award for lifetime achievement in 1993. Al Pacino, who produced memorable performances for Lumet in both “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Serpico,” introduced the director at the 2005 Academy Awards. “If you prayed to inhabit a character, Sidney was the priest who listened to your prayers, helped make them come true,” the actor said. Accepting the award, Lumet thanked the many directors who had inspired him, then added, “I guess I’d like to thank the movies (too).” Lumet immediately established himself as an A-list director with his first theatrical film, 1957′s “12 Angry Men,” which took an early and powerful look at racial prejudice as it depicted 12 jurors trying to reach a verdict in a trial involving a young Hispanic man wrongly accused of murder. It garnered him his first Academy Award nomination. Other Oscar nominations were for “Dog Day Afternoon” (1975), “Network” (1976) and “The Verdict” (1982). “Network,” a scathing view of the television business, proved to be Lumet’s most memorable film and created an enduring catch phrase when crazed newscaster Peter Finch exhorted his audience to raise their windows and shout, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” It won Academy Awards for Paddy Chayefsky for best screenplay, Finch as best actor (presented posthumously) and Faye Dunaway as best actress. Although best known for his hard-bitten portrayals of urban life, Lumet’s resume also included films based on noted plays: Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night,” Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge,” and Tennessee Williams’ “Orpheus Descending,” which was made into “The Fugitive Kind.” He also dealt with such matters as the Holocaust (“The Pawnbroker”), nuclear war (“Fail-Safe”) and the convicted Soviet spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (“Daniel”). He directed a highly successful Agatha Christie mystery, the all-star “Murder on the Orient Express,” as well. Other popular Lumet films included “Running On Empty,” “Equus,” “Family Business’ and “The Wiz.” The director was born June 25, 1924, in Philadelphia to a pair of Yiddish stage performers, and he began his show business career as a child actor, appearing on radio at age 4. He made his Broadway debut in 1934 with a small role in Sidney Kingsley’s acclaimed “Dead End,” and he twice played Jesus, in Max Reinhardt’s production of “The Eternal Road” and Maxwell Anderson’s “Journey to Jerusalem.” After serving as a radar repairman in India and Burma during World War II, Lumet returned to New York and formed an acting company. In 1950, Yul Brynner, a friend and a director at CBS-TV, invited him to join the network as an assistant director. Soon he rose to director, working on 150 episodes of the “Danger” thriller as well as other series. The advent of live TV dramas boosted Lumet’s reputation. Like Arthur Penn, John Frankenheimer, Delbert Mann and other directors of television drama’s Golden Age, he smoothly made the transition to movies. Lumet continued directing features into his 80s, and in 2001 he returned to his television roots, creating, writing, directing and executive producing a cable series, “100 Centre Street.” It was filmed in his beloved New York. In 2006, he brought out “Find Me Guilty,” starring Vin Diesel and based on a true story about a mob trial in New Jersey. His final film was 2007′s “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke and Marisa Tomei. Lumet once claimed he didn’t seek out New York-based projects. “But any script that starts in New York has got a head start,” he said in 1999. “It’s a fact the city can become anything you want it to be.” His first three marriages ended in divorce: to actress Rita Gam, heiress Gloria Vanderbilt and Lena Horne’s daughter, Gail Jones. In 1980, he married journalist Mary Gimbel.

Scholars outrage at Manning ‘torture’

Obama professor among 250 experts who have signed letter condemning humiliation of alleged WikiLeaks source More than 250 of America’s most eminent legal scholars have signed a letter protesting against the treatment in military prison of the alleged WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning, contesting that his “degrading and inhumane conditions” are illegal, unconstitutional and could even amount to torture. The list of signatories includes Laurence Tribe, a Harvard professor who is considered to be America’s foremost liberal authority on constitutional law. He taught constitutional law to Barack Obama and was a key backer of his 2008 presidential campaign. Tribe joined the Obama administration last year as a legal adviser in the justice department, a post he held until three months ago. He told the Guardian he signed the letter because Manning appeared to have been treated in a way that “is not only shameful but unconstitutional” as he awaits court martial in Quantico marine base in Virginia. The US soldier has been held in the military brig since last July, charged with multiple counts relating to the leaking of thousands of embassy cables and other secret documents to the WikiLeaks website. Under the terms of his detention, he is kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, checked every five minutes under a so-called “prevention of injury order” and stripped naked at night apart from a smock. Tribe said the treatment was objectionable “in the way it violates his person and his liberty without due process of law and in the way it administers cruel and unusual punishment of a sort that cannot be constitutionally inflicted even upon someone convicted of terrible offences, not to mention someone merely accused of such offences”. The harsh restrictions have been denounced by a raft of human rights groups, including Amnesty International, and are being investigated by the United Nations’ rapporteur on torture. Tribe is the second senior figure with links to the Obama administration to break ranks over Manning. Last month, PJ Crowley resigned as state department spokesman after deriding the Pentagon’s handling of Manning as “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid”. The intervention of Tribe and hundreds of other legal scholars is a huge embarrassment to Obama, who was a professor of constitutional law in Chicago. Obama made respect for the rule of law a cornerstone of his administration, promising when he first entered the White House in 2009 to end the excesses of the Bush administration’s war on terrorism. As commander in chief, Obama is ultimately responsible for Manning’s treatment at the hands of his military jailers. In his only comments on the matter so far, Obama has insisted that the way the soldier was being detained was “appropriate and meets our basic standards”. The protest letter , published in the New York Review of Books, was written by two distinguished law professors, Bruce Ackerman of Yale and Yochai Benkler of Harvard. They claim Manning’s reported treatment is a violation of the US constitution, specifically the eighth amendment forbidding cruel and unusual punishment and the fifth amendment that prevents punishment without trial. In a stinging rebuke to Obama, they say “he was once a professor of constitutional law, and entered the national stage as an eloquent moral leader. The question now, however, is whether his conduct as commander in chief meets fundamental standards of decency”. Benkler told the Guardian: “It is incumbent on us as citizens and professors of law to say that enough is enough. We cannot allow ourselves to behave in this way if we want America to remain a society dedicated to human dignity and process of law.” He said Manning’s conditions were being used “as a warning to future whistleblowers” and added: ” I find it tragic that it is Obama’s administration that is pursuing whistleblowers and imposing this kind of treatment.” Ackerman pointed out that under the Pentagon’s own rule book, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Manning’s jailers could be liable to prosecution for abusing him. Article 93 of the code says “any person who is guilty of cruelty toward any person subject to his orders shall be punished”. The list of professors who have signed the protest letter includes leading figures from all the top US law schools, as well as prominent names from other academic fields. Among them are Bill Clinton’s former labour secretary Robert Reich, President Theodore Roosevelt’s great-great-grandson Kermit Roosevelt, the former president of the American Civil Liberties Union Norman Dorsen and the novelist Kwame Anthony Appiah. Frank Luntz’s Latest Talking Point — Comparing a Family’s Budget to the Government’s

Click here to view this media Here’s the latest talking point courtesy of Frank Luntz being rolled out ad nauseum by every Republican politician I’ve been on the television for some time now, and unfortunately as Digby noted, being validated by our President. Here’s a rough transcript via Digby : Frank Luntz on Fox News this morning: All the statistics that I’ve been testing on both sides, this one stands out: the increase in discretionary non-defense spending over the past four years is 80%. Does any family within the sound of my voice have an 80% increase in spending? Well that’s what Washington is doing. So if a family can’t afford an 80% increase, surely Washington can’t afford it. All the things we’ve looked at, that’s the most powerful of all. Anchor: Wow. What impact do you think the influence of the Tea party will have on the public going forward as we get set to tackle the debt ceiling and the 2012 budget dramas we have yet to see? Luntz: It’s very significant. In fact we did a project with Freedomworks over the last 96 hours where they asked the question about the shutdown, whether if it was provoked or not if you would be less likely to vote for your member of congress. The Tea Party is saying to the American people, enough is enough, stop! If families have to tighten their belts, so should Washington. If the American people have to do more with less, so should Washington. Someone let me know when households have the ability to print money, raise taxes and start wars, will you? I’m sick to death of our politicians pretending that America is broke. The upper 1% are doing just fine, thank you. Our problem is there is not the political will to ask for some “shared sacrifice” from the have-mores out there and they’re completely unwilling to do anything to protect American jobs. If these corporations want their tax cuts, tie them to job creation right here in the United States. Want to fix Social Security, raise the income cap. Want to fix the deficit, start with repealing those Bush tax cuts, now. But we can’t have that, can we? And we’ve got these propagandists like Luntz out there feeding the politicians this nonsense to justify balancing the budget off of the backs of the elderly and the poor. Just shameful. There’s more at Digby’s post so go read the whole thing, but I’ll share this last bit here. It’s kind of an odd family that goes into debt so mom and dad quit their jobs and bring in even less money in order to pay it off, but hey, what do I know about finances anyway? I guess in good Real American families when you bring in less money and beat the children the debt magically vanishes somehow. I suppose God provides. Meanwhile, I’m going to move into my car, empty out my bank account and give the money to a rich person so he’ll win the future for me. Isn’t that what all responsible families are doing right now?
