Continue reading …As Bill O’Reilly leads a Fox News peasants’ rebellion against the royal wedding pageant, Glenn Beck is off to get his gun Bill O’Reilly The week got off to a bad start for Bill O’Reilly, who was deeply disturbed by the news that Standard & Poor’s have downgraded long-term US debt to a negative rating because of concerns that policy makers may fail to reach agreement on our budgetary challenges anytime soon ( view clip ). Even worse, the Democrats and the president are still harping on about the need to raise revenue by rolling back the tax cuts awarded to rich people by former President Bush (which were temporarily extended last year), yet remain reluctant to cut additional services to the poor, the elderly and to women’s reproductive health. O’Reilly analyses the situation with Brit Hume, who shared his gloomy outlook. While both men took comfort in the fact that at least the Republican party seems absolutely determined this time around not to back down from their plan to redefine America’s social compact by forcing through additional spending cuts for the poor while awarding additional tax cuts for the rich, they remain fearful that this strategy may backfire come election time. On a later segment, O’Reilly puts on his commoner hat to have a go at the royal family for foisting Prince William’s lavish wedding plans on the American public, which has no time for Britain’s culture of entitlement. He discusses the issue with Fox News anchor and royal enthusiast Martha MacCallum. I submit to you this is sport for England. It’s fun for England. They got the old Windsor Castle. They got the old Queen running around. They’ve got all the scandals. It’s fun for the peasants – and I’m a peasant, all right – it’s fun for them. But for America, we don’t recognise this, we don’t have royalty in this country and people like you try to foist it upon us. MacCallum posits that a strong monarchy is good for America and for western civilisation in general because it’s rebuilding a nationalistic feeling in the UK that will help counteract the failed multiculturalism experiment that Prime Minister David Cameron recently talked about . O’Reilly still finds the idea of people like Prince Charles and Camilla, whom he describes as “two pinheads”, living the high life and running up “millions of dollars on the taxpayer’s back” while the poor and downtrodden of Britain are struggling to cope with job losses and savage spending cuts, too undemocratic for his liking. So, how did they get all of their carriages and all the maintenance on their castles and everything? Because they stole it from the peasants! From you and me and all the others, I’m Irish, but how do you think the kings got all their castles? They stole them! MacCallum, who is of Scottish descent, agreed that some of that kind of thing may have gone on in the past, particularly in Scotland where the royal family did their share of pillaging and plundering. This infuriates O’Reilly. This would be like us in America celebrating the wedding of Al Capone’s great-great-great-great-granddaughter because he stole the money. Come on! O’Reilly closed out the segment insisting that he won’t be going anyway near the royal wedding, even though he wasn’t invited anyway. And then he gets back to discussing the problem of the working class in America – or union thugs, if you prefer – who continue to protest about losing their collective bargaining rights, and even went so far, this past weekend, as to boo former Governor Sarah Palin when she suggested that it was a good thing that workers had their take home pay reduced so corporations could enjoy a lower tax rate. Sean Hannity Despite the cold reception Sarah Palin received in Wisconsin and the booing from the crowd, Sean Hannity thought she did a fine job with her speech last weekend ( view clip ). He was also impressed by the speech given by Donald Trump, who spoke at a Tea Party rally in Florida. He discussed both Palin’s and Trump’s chances of winning the presidency in 2012 with conservative commentator Ann Coulter. Coulter thought that either candidate would be outstanding compared to the president we have to put up with at the moment, who she thinks had a free pass getting elected last time because he was “a 14 year old with no record”. Hannity agrees but says that President Obama will not have such an easy go of it this time around, now that the public knows what he is all about. The deficit still exists. It’s Obama’s deficit now; he can’t claim that it’s not. He now has a record, as you point out, so “hope and change”, reading a teleprompter, “Yes we can” slogans aren’t going to cut it this time. He’s got to deal with his debt, his deficit, his weak and timid foreign policy. I think it becomes extraordinarily more difficult for him just based on the fact that he now has to run on his record. Coulter agreed that the president’s record is a disgrace, particularly his foreign policy and that he has been running around dragging us into senseless conflicts, like the one in Libya, that we can’t afford and shouldn’t care about, which she adds is “typical Democrat foreign policy”. (I shudder to think what she must have thought of former Republican President George W Bush, who spent billions of dollars on his senseless invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.) Anyway, in terms of records, they both agreed that President Obama would not fare well in a match up against either of the afore-mentioned presidential hopefuls, which makes sense if not having much of a record to speak of is the barometer. Palin didn’t manage to serve out even one term as governor and Trump has never held office. Glenn Beck Glenn Beck was somewhat subdued this week as he returned from vacation to serve out the lame duck session of his cancelled TV show, but he did manage to work up a sweat about a story he read in the right-of-centre blog Redstate.com that drew attention to a new study by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) that looked at the importability of certain shotguns ( view clip ). Redstate concluded from reading the study that the ATF may be trying to spring new regulations on gun owners by imposing more restrictions on firearms that are not designed for a “sporting purpose”. Beck thinks that preventing American citizens from owning weapons that were designed to kill human beings is unconstitutional and he suspects that it is just one of the many ways that President Obama is trying to undermine the founders’ work. The second amendment is the right to own a gun to protect yourself against who? Clay pigeons?! No – an oppressive government! And don’t start, “Oh, they got tanks.” Yes, and they’ll roll over you. Positive charter . This is what he (President Obama) wants to change it to. First limited speech – no hate; no conspiracy theories. We’ve got to watch that speech. There’s got to be something in the constitution. The government-funded media – we should all just watch al-Jazeera, as Hillary Clinton said because “there’s no commercials on it” and, my favourite, “there’s not people arguing all the time.” So, in addition to this latest perceived assault on second amendment privileges, Beck fears that because of the president’s recent calls for more civility and because Secretary Clinton suggested that we check out al-Jazeera for more comprehensive foreign news coverage – and perhaps because his own show, which specialised in conspiracy theories, has been canned – that the first amendment is also under threat. These assaults on Beck’s freedom put him in no mood to listen to Nancy Pelosi’s recent plea to Republicans and Democrats to try to overcome their differences and to remember that they have “shared values”. I don’t know about you but we don’t have shared values. If you see the constitution as a positive charter, I don’t have anything in common with you. I’m sorry. I see it this way [as a negative charter]. Now, we can still love each other but Hillary Clinton will cry, because then there’ll be people disagreeing on television and then they’ll have to break for a commercial. Beck may find when it comes to the banning of assault weapons, many Americans don’t share his values either. Continue reading …On April 20, 2010, a horrific oil spill took place in the Gulf of Mexico on British Petroleum's (BP) Deepwater Horizon rig. Since that day, gas prices have risen nearly $1-a-gallon to $3.83 per gallon. President Barack Obama's anti-oil policies, including a drilling moratorium are at least part of the reason for that dramatic spike. But you will rarely hear that from the mainstream media. It certainly isn't the story the network evening news shows have told their viewers since the oil spill. Out of 280 oil price stories since the disastrous pill, just 1 percent (3 out of 280) mentioned any connection between Obama's anti-oil efforts, such as the drilling moratorium, and rapidly rising gas prices. Instead of asking whether Obama's anti-oil policies could be increasing the cost of gas, the networks blamed other factors such as Mideast turmoil or the “money game” played by speculators. Certainly, the turmoil in Libya, Egypt and surrounding nations has increased worries about oil production and can influence the price. But the networks also should have looked for explanations much closer to home. ABC “World News with Diane Sawyer” on March 8, 2011, even asked if the gas prices in the “stratosphere” were the result of “gas gouging.” ABC's Matt Gutman reported that night, that the nation's most expensive and second most expensive gas stations hadn't posted their prices. He then declared, “Stations like this prey on unwitting travelers hoping to fill up their rental cars on the way to the airport.” After attacking those stations, Gutman admitted “This is technically not price gouging, a legal term which applies only during states of emergency.” He told viewers: “In fact, stations can charge as much as they want,” but then asserted that is wrong by quoting Mayor Buddy Dyer who said “We don't think this is right, we don't think people should be tricked into paying $2-a-gallon more for gas than they could half a mile down the road.” Of course stations can charge as much as they want, because no one is forced to buy gasoline from them. Consumers can just keep on driving to a station with a lower price. Gutman should have been inquiring about Obama's unwillingness to expand domestic oil production, rather than going on the seasonal media search for service station villains. During the past year, Shell's former CEO John Hofmeister as well as politicians including Gov. Haley Barbour, R-Miss., have cited Obama administration energy policies for rising gas prices. Obama and Federal Regulations Strangling Oil Development? Even though gas prices had bounced up and down and were on the decline in May 2010 after the oil spill, prices have shot up in the past year. Gasoline cost $2.73 per gallon when Obama instituted his sixth-month moratorium on deepwater and shallow drilling on May 30, 2010. Prices are now more than a dollar-a-gallon higher. Pump prices have more than doubled since Obama took office in January 2009. ” After two federal courts said the moratorium was illegal, the Obama administration instead moved to a de facto moratorium, by issuing no permits, while speeding up the permitting process for wind farms, ” The Heritage Foundation wrote back in December 2010. Jeff McMahon, a blogger for Forbes, wrote on March 25 that although the administration has begun issuing permits again (five as of that time), those drilling permits weren't “completely new” as the government was claiming. The exploration in question had begun before the moratorium. “Of 14 permits submitted for initial exploratory drilling in the Gulf-drilling that would be, in other words, new – one has been withdrawn for modification and 13 are listed as 'pending,'” McMahon said. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also seeking to regulate the oil industry over greenhouse gas emissions, and the Bureau of Land Management under Obama appointee Ken Salazar “would issue new rules making it harder to develop natural resources on government-owned land,” according to Heritage. That's not all. On March 15, 2011, American Petroleum Institute (API) released a press release criticizing the administration for new environmental hurdles to a pipeline that would transport crude from Canadian oil sands. “This much-studied and much-needed pipeline would provide a critical link to our largest energy supplier, Canada, and its vast resources of nearby and available crude oil,” Jack Gerard, API's president and CEO, said in the release. API also said the pipeline could mean 13,000 construction jobs in the U.S. and the project could lead to more than 340,000 U.S. jobs eventually. The pipeline, called Keystone XL, has already been scrutinized for 32 months by 10 federal agencies and many state and local ones, yet “workers are sitting on the sideline waiting for the project to start,” according to API. Yet most of the network stories about gas prices didn't even ask if such policies were contributing to the rise. During the Bush years, the networks did the opposite – criticizing the president for gas prices , asking what the government should do and even entertaining far-left conspiracy theories about gas prices manipulation and election outcomes. CBS's Couric wondered back in October 2006, “Is this [falling gas prices] an election year present from President Bush to fellow Republicans,” while showing an image of bumper sticker that read: ” GOP: Grand Oil Party .” Following Couric's tease, Mason said: “Gas started going down just as the fall campaign started heating up. Coincidence? Some drivers don't think so.” Others in the media including CNN and Associated Press also ran stories about the supposed oil-price conspiracy. Networks Blame Speculators, Rather than Obama Rather than digging deep into those policies and explaining them for viewers, some of the network evening shows also predictably went looking for a business bad guy. NBC found an expert who said “I think you're seeing a tremendous amount of speculation in this market.” But that story wasn't nearly as critical of speculation as a CBS segment by Anthony Mason and Katie Couric. On March 23, 2011, Couric claimed they would “show you who is driving them [gas prices] up” before uttering the scary word “speculation.” The “Grim Reaper” of CBS, Anthony Mason, went on to report that oil futures trading is increasing the cost of oil, and therefore gasoline. He interviewed Michael Greenberger formerly of CFTC who said “It is accelerating the price of oil products, gasoline, heating oil, crude oil, and other energy products, for no good reason.” A bit later Mason said “The CTFC is now considering regulations to curb excessive speculation in oil, which more than ever before has become a money game.” Actually, according to Heritage there is a good reason. The Heritage Foundation explained how trading oil futures works on Feb. 23, 2011: “The oil futures market is just that, a futures market. The price-per-barrel spikes in oil this week have not affected the domestic market yet. In fact, former Shell Oil President John Hofmeister made the prediction in December 2010 that America would face $ 5/gallon gasoline by 2012 , a full month before the revolution in Egypt began.” Hofmeister has previously criticized the Obama administration for the drilling moratorium and at the time of his $5 prediction blamed the “pure politics” keeping ” us from drilling more of our resources ” for the rising gas prices. Things are traded based on speculation regarding future prices. With Obama's many policies designed to limit supply of domestic oil or government proposals to raise the gasoline tax, it's no wonder pump prices keep climbing. One network story noticed that the weak U.S. dollar is also partially responsible for the increase in gas prices. Jacking Up Prices is 'Green' Lining for President's Agenda Obama has made green or alternative energy a top priority for his administration, at the expense of domestic fossil fuel sources of energy. When expressing support of cap-and-trade policy, Obama admitted that ” electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. ” While Obama was talking about coal specifically, it is clear that his environmental agenda is more important to him than maintaining low-cost energy for consumers. Obama's energy secretary, Steven Chu, shares those same extreme environmentalist leanings. In 2008, Chu said, ” Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe .” With gas prices at $3.83-a-gallon America is well on the way. Bloomberg Businessweek found that high gas prices actually have a ” silver lining ” from Obama's perspective because they make consumers more willing to accept his goals. “Still, there's a silver lining in higher oil prices – or, rather, a green lining – for Obama, who has made clean energy one of his paramount causes. Rising fuel costs could go a long way toward advancing Obama's 'Win the Future' vision of an economy remade by green technologies, including electric vehicles, advanced batteries, wind and solar power, and high-speed trains,” they wrote on March 27, 2011. The magazine noted specifically that electric cars become a much better deal when gas prices are high. Gov. Barbour told NBC “Nightly News” on March 6 the Obama administration was causing prices to rise for that very reason saying, “This administration's policies have been designed to drive up the cost of energy in the name of reducing pollution, in the name of making very expensive alternative fuels more economically competitive.” Methodology The Business & Media Institute searched Nexis transcripts of ABC “World News,” NBC “Nightly News” and CBS “Evening News” for the words “oil” and “price” from the day of the oil spill (April 20, 2010) through March 30, 2011. The searched yielded 280 stories, but only 60 of them mentioned gas prices at all. A meager 3 stories (1 percent of the 280 stories) cited Obama's drilling moratorium or any other Obama policy as a factor in the huge jump in gas prices.

Spot gold set a new record of $1,501.26 (£917) an ounce in Asian trading, underpinned by a weak dollar. Standard & Poor’s downgrade of America’s debt outlook on Monday sparked a new flight into safe-haven investments. The ratings agency lowered its credit outlook to “negative” from “stable,” pointing to fiscal problems in the US. This sent shares tumbling and came at a time of fresh fears over the eurozone debt crisis, with Portugal edging closer to a bailout and Greece under pressure at home to default on its debt . US treasury secretary Tim Geithner, however, shrugged off S&P’s warnings and sought to reassure Wall Street that the world’s biggest economy would hang on to its gold-star AAA rating. Jonathan Barratt of Commodity Broking Services described the latest move in gold as “sensational”. He told Reuters: “Everything’s feeding into this – sovereign debt, the weaker dollar, inflation and investment demand. It is unusual to do it in Asian time. It goes to show how much appetite there is in Asia for bullion.” Analysts at Barclays Capital believe gold could go up to $1,520 an ounce in the next two to four weeks. Many investors see gold and other precious metals as the best place to park their money in times of uncertainty. Spot silver hit a 31-year high of $44.34 an ounce. Brian Ostroff of Windermere Capital described silver as “gold on steroids” on Tuesday. Gold has gained 32% over the past year, while silver has more than doubled in value.
