The folks at the New York Times aren't happy with just reporting the news. They want to be a part of it. Such is quite apparent given the arrest of Times freelancer Natasha Lennard during an Occupy Wall Street protest Saturday: In a tense showdown above the East River, the police arrested about 500 demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street protests who took to the roadway as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday afternoon. A freelance reporter for The Times, Natasha Lennard, was among those arrested. She was later released. As conservative blogger Jammie Wearing Fool smartly observed , Lennard actually contributed to the above referenced article about this incident published at the Times' City Room blog: Natasha Lennard, William K. Rashbaum and Elizabeth A. Harris contributed reporting. Ain't that sweet? Lennard isn't only affiliated with the Times. Her bio at Politico boasts a connection there as well: Natasha Lennard is a staff writer for Click. A recent graduate of Columbia Journalism School, she hails from England, where she attended the University of Cambridge and majored in philosophy. Before joining the Politico team, Natasha spent her summer after grad school on the intern rounds in New York, working at The New York Times (on the metro desk) and at Salon.com (working with the politics editor). Click is Politico's “People Watching in Washington” blog. As JWF observed, Lennard's Twitter account was filled with activity concerning this event:
Continue reading …To fully comprehend the sad spectacle that has become American politics since the 1980s, you need not peruse the politics section of major periodicals. Or the opinion, news or business pages of illustrious publications. No, lately you’d be best served by heading on over to the obituary section. For example, this past week, a legislative giant from an earlier and more evolved Republican Party – that is to say, one in which dazzling audiences with tales of cantering saddleback on the family T-Rex was not considered “reaching out to the base” – former Senator Charles Percy, passed away. This sad news has come not long after the passing of another Republican legend, former Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield. These men were both of the Rockefeller, or old Establishment wing of the Republican Party, a robust and scientifically literate (hint) group that followed in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight D Eisenhower. Therefore, the importance and symbolism of their passing, for so many reasons, cannot be overstated. It is the disappearance of their perspective and purpose that is one of the major reasons why our politics is where it is today – somewhere on the spectrum between corporate performance art and collective shame. Namely, the Bachmannization of the GOP, its influence in wrecking Washington culture and corrupting the current Republican Establishment, and its overall deleterious effect on the American middle class since the early 1980s. This history of accomplishment by these moderate to liberal Republicans and their now near-complete extinction also leads the more naivete among the Democratic Party – see 1600 Pennsvlvania Avenue – to believe there are still deals to be made with this current crop of Koch-infected androids, a group which considers George W. Bush to be a near-Maoist for having supported pro-business immigration reform, appointing Ben Bernanke to the Fed and wanting to ban those on terror watch lists from buying assault weapons. Dirty hippie! Essentially, the face of the GOP has gone from Mark Hatfield and Charles Percy to David Vitter and Tom Coburn, which would explain why a once-respected profession has lately morphed into something more closely resembling the oldest one. It may be hard for those who either were not alive (which includes me) or have not studied what the times were like to understand how different our legislating process and political culture was when men like Percy strode the halls of the Capitol like a colossus. It was a time when there were scores of Republicans who were more progressive on civil rights, war & peace and even social programmes than some Democrats. Percy supported legislation to stimulate the production of low-cost housing for the poor. He joined Senator Hubert Humphrey in creating an “Alliance To Save Energy” because of the OPEC oil embargo. Hatfield, meanwhile, one of the first military servicemen to enter Hiroshima after the dropping of the atomic bomb, opposed Vietnam and the first Gulf War and offered his view of national security thusly: “Every president other than Eisenhower has been seduced by the military concept that that is our sole measurement of our national security and the more bombs we build, the more secure we are.” He would be branded a peacenik today. Concurrently, there is about as much chance of that coming out of the mouth of any Republican legislator today (and most Democrats) as the numerical value for pi – or even an understanding you can’t eat it. But that is where the Rockefeller Republicans earned their paychecks. As Democrats still had many segregationists in their ranks – those who would later be seduced by the Republican Southern Strategy – or just didn’t have the numbers to pass good bills now and again, men and women like Margaret Chase Smith, Jacob Javitz and George Aiken were essential to getting this done and helping main street just a bit more that other street with the big bronze bull and habit of playing taxpayer-insured roulette. These Republicans of conscience, who held real sway in the party, as its congressional leaders and even presidential candidates, played a pivotal role in deals made by Democratic presidents, such as Lyndon Johnson, who needed their numbers to pass The Civil Rights Act (over 80 percent of the Republican Senate Caucus ultimately sided with Johnson and civil rights). In fact, their disappearance from our politics has led not only the Republican Party to resemble a Darth conference at the Hilton. But it has taken our entire political culture to a point just to the right of not working, such that President Obama is more conservative than was Percy, even if one were to compare their records as Senators from Illinois alone. Left-winged Republicans Meanwhile, as the President has searched in vain for good-faith partners among the few Republicans left with more marbles than Mariah Carey, all the while being ignored, insulted and squandering his popularity on a pipe dream. He doesn’t seem to grasp that Scott Brown and Olympia Snowe are only moderate when compared to a Know-Nothing Party, and would have been considered mainstream conservatives in the old GOP. Meanwhile, Obama’s current policies in Afghanistan, on the environment and in slashing social programs in service of his dreams of a world without government debt, would have been blocked from the left in the not-too-distant past – by these very Republicans Perhaps our resulting situation is best described by progressive polymath and top-rated talk radio host Thom Hartmann, in his analysis of 20-year old David Lewis’ challenge to Speaker of the House John Boehner in a primary, because Boehner is a “Socialist” who has failed to eliminate Social Security. Yeah, I didn’t make that up. Hartmann reminded those who have forgotten, that: “Just like Jason Bourne doesn’t remember his earlier life – David Lewis doesn’t remember America’s earlier life – under the New Deal years of the 1940s, fifties, sixties, seventies, and early eighties – when the middle class thrived – and our social safety nets allowed more and more Americans to pursue the American Dream. Without that memory – Lewis believes in a fantasy – a fantasy about the power of this magical thing called the “free-market” – a fantasy that societies can function just fine without a government – a fantasy that if we all act selfishly, then we’ll all prosper. It’s a fantasy, because it’s never, ever worked in the history of the world…” The Rockefeller Republicans made that “American Dream” happen, by working with Democrats on landmark legislation to move our country forward. But they are now gone, and we have been left with David Lewis and his brethren, and it’s hard to see how things will change in the near future. It almost makes me want to join Rick Perry in a public prayer dance. Follow me on Twitter @cliffschecter This piece was first published at Al Jazeera English

The website, AskToddAkin.com allows concerned citizens to automatically send tweets that question why the representative opposes programs that help the people of Missouri. The AFL-CIO says: So far, he hasn’t been willing to meet with voters in his district, even though he’s been traveling far and wide to tea party meetings and fundraisers hours outside of his district. When his constituents held a town hall meeting a block from his office, he wouldn’t even contact them to decline, although he did issue a press statement saying he wouldn’t go to a “Union Hall,” calling the town hall meeting a “Rally and Protest.” Among the questions voters can ask Akin: Why he voted to eliminate Medicare? Why he thinks Medicare is unconstitutional? Where are the jobs? Akin has a lifetime Progressive Punch score of 1.13 percent on labor issues, which is skewed by a few positive votes dealing with the erosion of workers’ rights caused by international trade deals. When it comes to other issues, such as giving aid to workers hurt by those trade deals, union rights, occupational safety and health, outsourcing, protection of worker pensions, workplace rights and the rights of public employees, Akin has never voted in favor of America’s workers.

Continue reading …The amount of vitriol being spewed at Michelle Obama from the right-wing paparazzi is really getting gross now. The beltway media remains mum about these vicious smears by the wingnutopia and its appalling. Evey step she makes there’s always a John Birch conspiracy theory attached to it by these jackasses. TMZ better move over because did you know the First Lady is really Lady Gaga? Right-wing media have attacked Michelle Obama for going shopping at Target, claiming she went ” ‘incognito,’ Lady Gaga-style” and asking, “Who does she think she’s fooling?” Right-wing media have previously attacked the first lady for everything from promoting health initiatives to wearing a red dress at a state dinner. It’s just getting creepier as the election approaches. Limbaugh: “It Has Gotten So Bad, They Had To Send Moochelle Out There In A Lady Gaga-Type Getup. She Went Shopping At Target.” During the September 30 edition of Premiere Radio Networks’ The Rush Limbaugh Show , Limbaugh said: “It has gotten so bad, they had to send Moochelle out there in a Lady Gaga-type getup. She went shopping at Target.” [Premiere Radio Networks, The Rush Limbaugh Show, 9/30/11 , via Media Matters ] Malkin: Obama Went To Target “About As ‘Incognito’ As Lady Gaga.” In a September 29 blog post, Michelle Malkin attacked Obama for shopping at Target, writing that Obama was “about as ‘incognito’ as Lady Gaga’s outfit at her younger sister’s graduation.” Malkin went on to call the first lady “the glamour queen” and further stated that Obama’s Target visit was “[t]o counter the negative diva buzz” and that it “[l]ooks like she left the bling at home.” [MichelleMalkin.com, 9/29/11 , via Media Matters ] The Blaze: “What Luck!” Obama “Wasn’t Snapped Without Make-Up, With Messy Hair Wearing Sweatpants To Do Her ‘Everywoman’ Shopping.” A September 30 post on The Blaze stated: Our First Lady has sooome luck. Not only is her hubby the leader of the free world, but just as the Obama camps [sic] is desperately looking for a way to relate to America’s Average Joes, a staff photographer with the Associated Press just so happened to be there to document her recent Target shopping jaunt. What luck! Obama also wasn’t snapped without make-up, with messy hair wearing sweatpants to do her “everywoman” shopping… like some of us who will remain nameless. Exit question: I could see a quick stop in at the local Target store as something that might happen out on the campaign trail. But who really believes Michelle Obama left the White House to pop in at the Alexandria, Va., Target because the East Wing ran out of paper towels? [The Blaze, 9/30/11 , emphasis in original] Weasel Zippers: “Honestly, Who Does She Think She’s Fooling?” A September 29 Weasel Zippers post titled, “Pic of the Day,” stated, “See, Mooch is just like us!” and showed a photograph of the first lady at Target. The post went on to ask, “Honestly, who does she think she’s fooling?” [Weasel Zippers, 9/29/11 ] I guess they’re cranky. It’s the idea of having Mitt Romney running as the 2012 GOP nominee because Chris Christie has continually rebuffed all their slobbering man-crush pleas. Poor right-wingers, they need a nap. Because really, Michelle Obama is in their crosshairs? She has been nothing but a model First Lady. It’s a creative game they have of just making stuff up. I’ll try it: If she disappeared from sight for a few weeks Beck would say that she must be hiding in a cave in Kenya practicing some ancient voodoo mojo to undo Christianity in America so we’ll be more susceptible to becoming Marxistsocialistheavens. Try your own hand teabircher thinking. It’s shockingly easy.
Continue reading …It really has been amazing watching dovish media members who were perpetually complaining about the terrorist detention center at Guantanamo Bay and the enhanced interrogation of its residents when George W. Bush was president now cheering the assassination of United States citizen turned terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki. A fine example of this hypocrisy occurred on HBO's “Real Time” Friday when the host who just last year supported a civilian trial for 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed applauded Awlaki's murder while encouraging his audience to join in the merriment (video follows with transcript and commentary, vulgarity warning): BILL MAHER, HOST: No, I know why you're happy tonight. President bad ass has done it again. A predator drone killed Anwar al-Awlaki. You can applaud that if you like. [Applause] He is Al-Awlaki, is the, well United States citizen is what he is. He was living in Yemen, became the world's most wanted terrorist. And it just shows once again do not f–k with Obama. This was how Friday's show began: a liberal Hollywoodan cheered what many would consider an unConstitutional assassination of a U.S. citizen and encouraged his liberal audience to celebrate with him. It almost defies the imagination. A few minutes later, while discussing national security issues with the Washington Post's Dana Priest, Awlaki came up again: DANA PRIEST, WASHINGTON POST: Bin Laden's dead. Al Qaeda's almost dead. And the guys who really know what they're doing and women they have a bead on the organizations that are coming up. That's al-Awlaki. That's why he got whacked. MAHER: That’s why he got whacked, and I’m glad he did. “That’s why he got whacked, and I’m glad he did.” After dismissing Priest, Maher brought Awlaki up with his exclusively liberal panelists: MAHER: And Chris Christie the other night, the new flavor of the month as they call him, the new man crush of the Republican Party, was at the Reagan library, and he said in his big speech that the president was just a bystander in the Oval Office. And then the next day Obama killed al-Awlaki, which I love. So I just want to say: maybe Obama’s bad at class warfare, but warfare warfare, he's pretty good. FORMER MICHIGAN GOVERNOR JENNIFER GRANHOLM (D): I would say so. [Applause] A few minutes later: MAHER: So were we right to kill al-Awlaki. I mean, look, Ron Paul, who I don’t agree with on a lot of things, but he has the balls the size of a Smart Car. He really does. He came out… SALMAN RUSHDIE, AUTHOR: Not necessarily helpful. MAHER: Maybe not. But, you know, he said we shouldn't do it. He said, his points were this is an American citizen Awlaki, never killed anybody personally. We're not at war with Yemen and he never had a trial. I don't agree with that, but you know… “He never had a trial. I don't agree with that.” Readers are advised to remember this. SETH MACFARLANE, CREATOR “FAMILY GUY: It's a weird gray area because my first instinct when I read this was, “Well, yeah, that makes perfect sense.” There was no feasible way that we could arrest this guy. So what else do you do? If Osama bin Laden would had been an American citizen we still would have had to go in and deal with him as we did. GRANHOLM: Take him out. Take him out.
Continue reading …There weren’t many progressives who got dragged under in the Tea Party tsunami– or more appropriately, in the stay-at-home malaise from the Democratic base that practically wiped the GOP-leaning Blue Dogs off the map. But several of Blue America’s best old friends were among that tiny handful– Alan Grayson, Russ Feingold, Carol Shea-Porter and Mary Jo Kilroy. This week Blue America is very happy to be endorsing Mary Jo once again. And the great news is that in their rush to lock in an unfair Republican electoral map, the state legislature has created one super-blue district based around Columbus… the heart of Mary Jo’s old seat. She’s off and running and Blue America wants to help her get back into Congress. So do Progressive Caucus co-chairs, Raúl Grijalva and Keith Ellison, who endorsed her on the same day she announced she would run. She’ll be joining us for a live chat here in the comments section (below) today at 2pm (ET). You can contribute to her campaign here at the Blue America ActBlue page . One of the things that first attracted us to Mary Jo is that she came roaring into Congress and immediately flew in the face of both party establishments by voting against the Bush TARP bailout, which she recognized as an unwarranted giveaway to the Wall Street banksters. Today she’s still hammering home what she was saying then: “We must focus on jobs and the economy. It is time we re-invest in America. Build roads, bridges and rail. Help our manufacturing sector revive. Provide strong job training programs. Expand VISTA and Americorps so young Americans can work to improve their neighborhoods, parks and coastal areas. We need to help those long term unemployed to get back in the workforce. “It is time to stop giving tax breaks to the most privileged of our society and to end tax cuts for billionaires who pay a lower rate than their secretaries and end the tax loopholes that send our jobs overseas. “It is time for the millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. They have benefited while working people have been hurt in the economy over the last decade. As Elizabeth Warren was so correct in pointing out, they benefited from the teachers who taught their workers, the police and fire fighters who protect their homes and businesses, the public roads they use to take their products to market. When I was in Congress I called for a vote– before the 2010 election– on ending the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, and voted against extending that tax cut. She went from championing working families inside Congress to working on a grassroots level in the campaign to defeat Kasich’s anti-labor legislation. “Teachers, police and firefighters,” she emphasizes, “did not cause the problems with Ohio’s budget.” I asked her about the healthcare reform bill that she supported in the House. She called it “a start, a beta version” of what she envisions. “In the last Congress, I voted against the anti-choice Stupak amendment. I pushed to make sure that people with pre-existing conditions are able to access care. I was disappointed in the failure to include a public option. I know there is more work to do to make health care affordable and accessible.”
Continue reading …Courage is contagious, and the Occupy movement continues to grow. Yesterday there were arrests in Boston and San Francisco: BOSTON — A group called Occupy Boston took over Dewey Square in Boston Friday night holding a 60s-style sit in. ” It doesn’t look like the politicians are serving the people any more,” said John, a protestor who would only give his first name. “They’re serving people with money.” This is part of nationwide movement that began with a large protest last week on Wall Street. “We’re talking about government reform. We’re talking about finance reform,” said Nadeem Mazen, from Occupy Boston. “And we’re opening up a national dialogue as part of a really big issue that’s on so many people’s minds.” A few blocks away a group called Take Back Boston lead hundreds of people marching from Boston Common to the Financial District. At 100 Federal Street the protesters gathered at both entrances to the Bank of America building shouting “We got sold out.” The crowd included dozens of families facing foreclosure. “The bank took over my property. Tried to evict everybody,” said Mallerrie McCoy of Dorchester. “They boarded up my windows. They changed our locks. I’m here to say I’m not going anywhere.” And in San Francisco, protesters went into the belly of the beast: SAN FRANCISCO — Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of San Francisco today to protest Wall Street banks and six were arrested, police said. The protesters marched along Market Street this afternoon, stopping in front of Bank of America, Charles Schwab and Wells Fargo, organizers from ReFund California said. Six activists went inside a Chase Bank branch in the 500 block of Market Street with sleeping bags and pillows and prepared to stay, organizers said. According to police, officers repeatedly warned the protesters they would be arrested if they refused to leave. The activists refused to leave and were arrested for trespassing, police said.
