Apple reportedly abandons supposed push for integrated SIMs in theoretical European iPhones

This one was all rather rumory to begin with, but play along if you don’t mind a pile of unconfirmed reports to start the day. A few weeks back it was said that Apple was working with Gemalto to create a non-removable, software-reconfigurable SIM that would be built right into European iPhones, saving a number of headaches for users and, more importantly, for Apple. This decidedly unconfirmed report was supposedly enough to get European carriers all worked up in a tizzy, angry that, among other things, customers would never need to actually interact with those carriers themselves — all actions, including activation, could be handled right through the App Store . Now, for the final layer of unconfirmed reporting in this delectably speculative layer cake, we have word from The Daily Telegraph that Apple has apparently given up on this plan and will continue to ship hardware to Europe with honest to gosh SIM cards, just like it always has. In other words: carry on, nothing to see here. We have high hopes that Google TV will evolve into something magical and wondrous over the next year or so as its namesake adds apps and features to flesh out the platform’s somewhat underwhelming current state. Today, though, it just got a little less attractive thanks to a move by Viacom to block full episodes from streaming on your Logitech Revues and your Sony Internet TVs and the like. We’ve confirmed with our own Revue that attempting to stream episodes from network sites like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central show messages like “this content is not available for your device,” which is an unfortunate and frustrating change. Yes, the user agent tweak still works, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just get along? Surely Google is still working on its content partnership agreements and hopefully things will improve in the future, but given how friendly the company’s past dealings with Viacom have been we’re not optimistic about this particular front. GameStop’s Black Friday ad leaked out a few days early, and there are some pretty decent deals if you’re buying a new console — each of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo’s systems come with pack-in games, and they’re fairly good ones too. Still, the items your gadget-loving soulmate truly wants under the festive hearth are nowhere to be found in the ad — so don’t be surprised if you have to pay top dollar if you’re planning on grabbing a commemorative red Wii , hacker-friendly Kinect or a PlayStation Move as part of your holiday haul. Seems that Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, picked up a Galaxy Tab on his recent trip to Samsung’s home country of South Korea while seeking investment and trade opportunities. Unfortuntely, he doesn’t seem to be much of a fan of the GT-P1000′s camera according to a recent tweet made from his certified Twitter account. Apparently, he prefers the quality of his trusty Leica M9 camera spotted in the EXIF of the images he posted from Japan just a few days prior — the $17,500 Neiman Marcus edition , we presume. We don’t usually find our latest tech news in Women’s Wear Daily yet the publication seems to have scooped Rupert Murdoch’s plans for a tablet-only newspaper called The Daily — news now seemingly confirmed by the New York Times . Scheduled for release early next year, The Daily is expected to cost 99 cents per week (about $4.25 per month) for an electronic paper published seven days a week by a 100-member strong newsroom staffed with “twentysomething” talent led by a former managing editor from the New York Post . According to the sources speaking to WWD, It’ll be written with the “sensibilities” of a tabloid and the intelligence of a broadsheet focusing on national news. In other words, it’s said to be like “The New York Post Goes to College.” A beta is expected by Christmas before hitting the iPad “and other tablet devices” sometime in early 2011. We joked that the Droid 2 didn’t need a marketing campaign , the leaks were getting so much press, and lo and behold, its Droid 2 Global refresh hit shelves without a single official word from Verizon. We figured the wireless carrier had taken our idea to heart and would rely entirely on word of mouth to sell the 1.2GHz worldphone, but if that’s the case, Big Red’s bending the rules — it’s given the handset a quick Facebook plug to speed that process along. At 215 characters, the status update is a little bit long to retweet, but you can Like it all you want… or even use it as a soapbox if you really must. Those wily shoppers at QVC have beaten the world once again in securing an exclusive on Pandigital’s 9-inch Novel tablet . You’ll recall that we weren’t exactly overwhelmed with joy after handling the 7-inch Novel , and sadly this new slate looks like nothing more than a growth spurt, bringing as it does the same resistive touchscreen, B&N ebook store access, 2GB of integrated storage, and 802.11b/g WiFi highlights. Admittedly, QVC throws in a 4GB microSD card and prices it at an affordable $214, but we’re always wary of Android devices that neglect to state which version of the OS they’re running. They said they’d do it , and by golly, it’s been done — a specially-equipped Audi TTS drove the entire 12.42 miles and 156 precarious turns of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb without a driver at the wheel. ( Google , eat your heart out.) While the vehicle technically performed the feat about a month ago in September, Audi decided to wait until this last week to proclaim it to the world, following a helicopter accident during filming that sent pilot Jim Dirker to the hospital. Thankfully, he survived to fly another day, and at least some of the footage pulled through as well; you’ll find a brief clip after the break of the shiny white Quattro autonomously speeding up that hill. Rohan Shravan’s Notion Ink Adam may have a ways to go , but his company’s certainly got a beautiful new website, showing off the fabled Tegra 2 tablet with the Pixel Qi screen and fabulous battery life in all its conceptual glory. We’ll be darned if the tablet doesn’t have a new feature, too, in the form of a trackpad on the unit’s back, described as providing “all the functionality and freedom of the main touch surface” when you’re holding the device with a single hand. We’d chide Rohan for the continual feature creep, but as long as he doesn’t venture into Duke Nukem Forever vaporware territory in his quest for perfection, we’re honestly happy to wait.
